We see the entitlement in full action when creators go to Japan, Korea, and China, and treat public places as their own personal TikTok content farm. Even Disney isn't designed for those sorts. At Epcot (the park designed to effectively be an alternative to world travel) there's this step pyramid in the Mexico section that drunk tourists keep trying to climb up, and it's super common for Disney influencers to do attention-seeking stunts. Even in a place custom-designed for those folks they still are tempted to break rules and cause hell for staff for social media clout

Sheesh. And it's not like churches are any different - I have been to so many of them in Europe and it is usually very quiet in them even when they are full of tourists. I dare say any place of worship or important location for any faith should be a place to be quiet and reflect upon yourself and your life - or, if you are with someone, talk quietly about the artworks and special objects in the place. Basically, treat the place with respect, even if you have some misgivings about religion as a whole (I know I certainly did going off how extremely lavish many churches can be). A place of worship is not the place for any discourse, antics or goofiness.

Influencers being wild in other countries legitimately makes me more anxious than ever to even think about traveling. Like folks are jumping these people and I don't even blame them but you can only push a population so far. Japan is literally banning tourists from some local shops by claiming there's no room or enforcing invitation only rules so that only people they know can bring new people in. It's getting really bad and I'm honestly so embarrassed whenever I see videos like that. Because I don't even like seeing people do that kind of nonsense in the US. Which mostly leaves us only being able to visit tourist traps when a lot of people genuinely want to visit some of these temples and historic restaurants. totally. I have traveled a lot and taking pictures is something I think about a lot. on one hand, growing up on National Geographic I think I'm taking pictures of the beauty or of what's there or to remember this thing. but, I also hate taking pictures of people to have them notice I'm doing it and feel disrespected. People sneak pictures of me and I don't always love it so I have empathy. I hate seeing people's travel pictures of people who are angry you are taking their picture. However, if you see a stunning scene or gorgeous person and you ask, you're getting a posed photo instead of the real moment of life there. for me some of the hardest influencer clips are like "look at the conditions of these people's poverty! look at how bad it is in 3rd class! I'm in first class and walking through 3rd class filming it". on one hand, I get you're documenting the experience, but not your experience. and why is it worth disrespecting the people here to impress or educate people online. idk, it's a whole conversation. plus- I have been yelled at for taking pictures before. I have learned to be very sneaky, but if you're a woman traveling alone it's not great to attract extra angry attention. and you hear some influencers be like "these people weren't friendly" or "this place wasn't safe" but you're walking around with 10k of equipment filming people without their consent, obviously you are having a different experience there. Whereas when I'm there walking around with no visible camera, looking at everyone and smiling and engaging with them, I had a great time.

There has been a lot of action taken by local governments against overtourism in several of the areas in the video. A black screen was put up at that Lawson by Mt. Fuji to block the view (though it had to be taken down temporarily because of a typhoon), many of the streets where maiko and geisha are in Kyoto have been come private and now completely off limits to tourists, Hachiko now has a fence and even a screen to block it off completely during particularly high tourist volume times, and a lot of shrines, temples, castles, etc. are starting to introduce increased charges for tourists to enter while still being cheap/free for locals. These sort of tourists also just make things harder for immigrants and non-ethnically Japanese Japanese people. I'm glad I don't live near any of the major tourist destinations here.

I was hosting an event with my local EGL fashion community in London, and since i had rented out a cafe lounge at a cat cafe, I went to the shopping centre early to meet the people who were attending. I had people chasing after me JUST to get a photo of me, not even asking me beforehand, and still doing so despite me, and people who came later on, saying no outright. For that trip, we took every possible precaution to avoid making mistakes and to be as respectful as possible towards the culture, as I come from a Latin American country where we often face many restrictions. When we finally arrived in Japan, specifically in Tokyo, we were very mindful of our behavior, such as not crossing streets on a red light or avoiding tipping, among other things. That trip was a beautiful experience. Back then, tourism was not as massive as it is today, and people were very kind. We had a few mishaps, but many generous people helped us, despite the language barrier. However, it is true that the influence of social media, influencers, and streamers has led many countries to reject tourism due to disrespectful behavior. It’s a shame that in some places, local cultures are not respected, and people act inconsiderately.

I went to Japan recently and didn’t see any rude tourists thankfully. Mainly bc the only rude tourists I had to deal with me the whole time. My mom and her 3 friends. I went with a childhood friend, his parents, my mom, and my mom’s friend. We’re all Vietnamese and I thought since Japanese culture is similar to ours, they would know better. But they didn’t bc they’re so used to living American lifestyles. And bc they’re old and think they know more than my friend and I. My friend and I were the only ones who went out of our way to be respectful and considerate. Meanwhile the elders kept talking loudly, wandering off on their own, blocking ppl’s way, eating and drinking in the train, walking around while eating/drinking, and being rude to the locals. They wandered off in Shinjuku near Kabukicho. Yes, the red light district. My mom blocked the path of 2 hapless old Japanese ladies and I had to gesture her to move. The old ladies thanked me for it. Still had a good time in Japan overall. Japan is a country that I’m only traveling to with friends.

5:03 that’s one of the reasons why working in hospitality ain’t for everyone 😭. I’ve worked in a hotel a couple years ago, where half the reception staff got burn out and developed anxiety. Tho I dislike working in the housekeeping department and pray to change careers as soon as something better pops up, I still find it more tolerable than dealing directly with the guests. This year I got accused of robbery for the first time ever working in the field for years. And the story they came up with didn’t even make sense. They were Americans and said I stole a part of the money and left 200$ 🤡. Even described that I opened a bag, and searched for the wallet. Dude, the whole room was a mess. Full of travelling bags across the floor, kids toys, shoes, clothes and tablets, how was I supposed to find something in there? We barely get enough time to do our job and I’d spend my precious time looking for money? The man said he didn’t want the money back, but if the hotel found who stole it would be nice. He said he’d go to the police and report the hotel, tho. But it’s been months and I still work there without issues and people like my work and trust me. My boss suspects they wanted a free stay and breakfast. These people be travelling to other countries staying at 4 stars hotels and acting poorer than the working class to the point of ruining someone’s life like it meant nothing.

I briefly worked in a hotel, and while I was cleaning, some lady walked up and said I stole her phone. I just ignored her and kept cleaning while she was losing her mind. Spoiler: No, I didn't take her phone, I was busy working all day. People are horrible. Same place some woman tried fighting my manager because she wanted alcohol at 8am but the bar was closed (duh.)

@ Jez… Some people seem to come straight with bad intentions. Recently some made up stuff when they checked in. Such has bed missing sheets, a kids toy on top of the tv table, etc. but it got proven to be false. Still, the reception told us to be careful with then and avoid problems. If I were the manager I would kick them out. Depending on the place people can loose jobs because of such accusations.

I blame all of this on bad parenting and lack of education. Social media emboldened sociopaths and narcissists all over the world but specially American ones. Im Puerto Rican and I have to see tourists talking about how theyre going to be buying places in the island for Air BnB or acting stupid and conceited. Especially during the pandemic, we had so many southern ppl just going and being stupid and disrespectful. My brother works in a hotel in the capital and his horror stories from the pandemic were instanity but it seems its still going on....🙄

These are invasive bugs, they have common characteristics : • call themselves ‘nomad’. • into yoga. • into vegan trends. • renting cheapest accommodations yet complains about it. • using “avoid touristy” slogan. • parts of them do bagging in the streets to fund their trips. • If some places impose restrictions (clothing, timing, area limit & behavior), they think the country against their ‘freedom’ values.

I’m from Mexico CDMX, my first travel to Cancún omg so horrible how tourists behave, they don’t say thank you to the people working at hotels or shops, it’s culture for us to be friendly and helpful but they just get advantage of it, laugh at waitress accent even though they try to speak the language and be polite. Just be respectful and don’t cause trouble like if you’re in your own country, I’m sure that tourists wouldn’t like seeing people in their country behaving the way they do.

That's so bizarre to me. I really don't understand how people can't even be polite to people who are there trying to work for your benefit. As someone from the US, and someone who grew up learning Spanish like most people in Texas, I really don't know what happened. I'd never think that way, and I'd even try to use the opportunity to work on Spanish even though it wouldn't compare to a native speaker. What a waste of space some people are, not even taking the opportunity to appreciate the experience they have and the work other people are doing while they're travelling.

I can't help but notice a double standard here : I've seen plenty of similar videos on social media with tourists influencers with the exact same "main character" attitude in Europe, whether in my home country (France, mostly in Paris) or in other European countries like Italy, Spain etc... However, they don't seem to face nearly as much criticism. Instead, it's often the locals who get judged, which I think is crazy. They do the same things, such as being loud and obnoxious on the subway, filming people without their consent, or doing photoshoots at inappropriate times and in inappropriate places etc...

I feel this as a spanish person, people don't seem to care when people misbehave in southern europe when their erratic behavior and littering is crazy. @@tenneluna6948 As a british person, I'm sorry that some those horrible people did that. I feel emberrassed, because British tourists can be the worst. Personally, I'd be respectful and considerate no matter which country I'm in, but I am aware that a lot of British tourists have caused problems in other countries. It's awful. Was the elderly man okay and were the nurses okay? Did anyone help them or stand up for them? I hope they were able to get him to the ambulance on time.

@@ReptilianTeaDrinker Yes he was able to be carried fine, they ignored the guys, unfortunately we are a lot more used to these horrid behaviors so the best thing is to ignore it or call the police. Stuff like this is why there are so many anti tourist protests happening in my country now though, people are fed up. I'm starting to see this same sentiment in Japan. It's so awful that the actions of a few taint it for everybody else, but we have always had exceptionally bad tourists because they are usually hooligans looking for cheap beaches and alcohol, 0 cultural interest in anything or love for the country itself. Seeing countries that historically had pleasant cultural tourism start to fall into this is worrying... soon nowhere will be safe because of social media

I am from Portugal and my country has thousands of tourists (especially during summer). But in some cities, like Lisbon and Porto, there's so many tourists even the housing prices are going up (rent is super expensive in certain zones and it is tough for university students to find rooms that don't cost a kidney or a spleen). Plus, some tourists sadly do quite some mischief, like a bunch of british tourists that got drunk, stripped naked and started to act like lunatics when they were in a bar in Albufeira, Algarve (located in the south of Portugal)

As resident of a popular tourist destination and an avid traveler myself, it makes me so angry when tourists don’t take time to understand basic social customs and phrases of the country they are visiting. Not only does it come off as absolutely ignorant but also ruins the experience for respectful travellers, as locals assume that that’s how most tourists act. As a tourist you are a visitor, leave no trace and respect customs. The locals are not there for your entertainment!
