Every time you start scrolling on social media you’ll eventually see an influencer with a seemingly better life than you. With their 5am morning routines where they harvest wheat from their organic garden and cook cereal from scratch - it’s not surprising to see so many of them taking their private jet to go to the beach. But maybe not all is what it seems when faking your wealth is a real possibility behind a screen. There’s so much pressure with beauty standards, your personal image, and an obsession with luxury goods that’s causing influencers to go broke trying to look rich. East Asian looksmaxxing is when your financial success is directly tied to your appearance - you ever heard of someone taking out a loan to buy a luxury bag for clout? It's insane out here #edvasian

Yep, kinda the same vibe as ruining your mental health for the grind just to pretend to be happy, or being controlling/abusive over your family to try to feel like you have a loving family. It's a sincere belief in "fake it till you make it", that people from the upper echelons of society would want to associate with you if they see you with a Gucci purse and not Target bag, or with a Rolex watch instead of Casio. What these people misunderstand is that just showing off wealth does not impress those people; your skill in acquiring it does. Mark the Lizard didn't buy Oculus Rift for 2 bil because Palmer Luckey was posting himself in Armani three-piece suits.

Reading isn't an expensive hobby, but collecting books certainly is. I have spent quite a bit of money buying physical copies of my favourite book series because I like the feeling of having the full set on my bookshelf. Technically, people who say it is expensive aren't wrong, but reading is an outlier, in my opinion, given that some books can actually be quite expensive (for books at least), but some aren't, and obviously libraries exist, as you said. And booktok is a little bit crazy so I take everything people say on there to be an extreme version of what they are actually talking about.

2nd hand bookstores are so expensive now where I am and the library is no longer well supplied since covid (funding ig) and closes on weekends and also closes before i get home from work on weekdays so yeah reading was becoming an expensive hobby for me. Now I just read online wherever I can find stuff free. That said it's probably the aesthetics of reading on booktok that are so expensive rather than actual reading. I don't see them showing off their battered old second hand copies or loaned books on booktok.
@jade5379
@jade5379 11 күн бұрын
@@nbucwa6621And I agree. Funding for libraries suck, and a lot of libraries that I go to don't have as many books. If more people gave them attention, like on booktok, I wonder if that would help some. Does your library have an app? Currently I use three different library apps with two different libraries lol. I like ebooks, so I try to make the most of it, but I don't know how widely available it is.

It was always there. The reason why kids could sometimes walk in almost rags but always had a smartphone was basically unwilling to get excluded from YET ANOTHER sphere of life. Not just to fit in, while it also plays a major role, but also not to have that mental strain "I am worse than everyone else". It is stupid, but there is someghing about that mental comfort you are not even more excluded... And I didn't notice or name it until we had lectures in my university how exclusion is one of the major society problems. I am an adult, but due to my situation I still feel that in the back of my head when I see at the Local Game Shop that people can easily spend at the whim, while I have to rethink for a week if I want something or not. And while I am fully aware no one is going to laugh it off, there is that innate... Not even fear but discomfort.

This is how I feel with hiking. I don't like gatekeeping, but I'm a pretty avid hiker and I can't tell you how many times I've seen obvious non-serious hikers have super-expensive gear. You don't need $300+ boots to walk on a simple 4 mile out-and-back trail, nor do you need a $250 bag from Osprey to put one water bottle and a couple granola bars in. Both pickleball and hiking are cheap hobbies for most. Buy basic fundamentals and go. Pickleball girl could have just purchased a paddle and joined a rec league, but no, she needed overproced clothing, expensive lessons (which she could have just learned from others in a local league), and a fancy high-end country club membership. For her to leave work and move to play shows that she does have money and can afford to do so, but she was totally humble-bragging. Definitely agree with the comment about finding good stuff at secondhand stores, though.

The walmart cup actually looks better than stanley. As bad as it sounds, I wouldn't buy my kid a stanley cup just to fit in. If at most is all they're saying is "that's not a stanley neenah neenah", no obstruction to their learning, no physical assaults, I would tell my kid to ignore those kids. You fail as a parent if you keep doing everything for your kid to fit in, what would you do when your kid gets bullied for TRYING to fit in because that can happen? Your money was just wasted on a stanley cup instead of helping to build you're child's self-confidence and resilience. A lot of real people who are rich, not celebrities, do just that. When my mother was a bank teller she had a customer who would come in who wore ratty clothes and a dry cleaner's bag as a poncho, her account was stacked, everyone would treat her like a queen when she came in despite looking like a homeless lady. One of the families my family knows lived in a 1.2M house, but they'd shop at thrift stores. You don't stay rich by spending your money on a bunch of silly stuff.

I think my mother would have laughed in my face if nine year old me told her that I needed to be bought an expensive cup to "fit in". I think it's okay to help your child work through big feelings like that over something so trivial as a cup instead of just going out and buying it to put a band-aid over the actual problem of the child not being fully confident in themselves (which is the parent's job to teach). But who knows.

Your comment should be the top comment. That should be called neglect. You should be working with your child through those feelings. Books, snacks, beverages, extra clothes, tools, makeup, you name it and I probably had it and happily offered it to people. It wasn't even a big bag, everyone was surprised at how much I could fit in it. In other words, whoever that woman was I love and respect her. I see a lot of women with very expensive handbags and big luxury shopping bags riding the bus and subway. It is also very common for Korean men to have very expensive luxury vehicles but live in a very small cheap apartment in a “poor” neighborhood. My friend told me some guys would rather sleep in their car just to maintain their image. Like even dating apps like tinder are very deceiving. Profiles usually have photos of beautiful views, expensive food, wearing expensive clothes/jewelry, and them driving expensive vehicles. Because of all of this the luxury counterfeit business is actually sooooo good you can’t even tell it’s fake sometimes. My thing isn't so much how they look, that's subjective (although I kind of agree with you on some of them lol), it's more that the luxury stuff is being more and more cheaply made and the only thing differentiating it is the price tag. Like if it was of astronomical quality and I'd never have to replace that item ever again, I could kind of see the allure. But often the items aren't of any better quality or construction than the stuff priced at a middle-of-the-road level. Not to mention that if you're buying an item that expensive just because it's the hot item right now, you're not even going to keep it for a long time because you'll be so worried about it "going out of fashion" in like two days.

What I find funny is that all those branded items don't make them look rich, but poor and tacky. Prada, Gucci and so on are brands that are made for middle class people who want to show off to others. But those who are actually really rich, like old money folks, usually don't wear something that has a brand name plastered all over it. They know they're rich, they don't need to show that off to anyone. These influencers would be better off investing their money in good quality custom made outfits that actually fit them well and will last for several years.

I work at a museum and saw a group of children quickly run through our Gisella Loeffler art exhibit. Loeffler painted stunning whimsical and childlike colorist works that one would think children would love and be drawn to. Lots of cartoon like figures... Later in the day, I saw the same children in a fashion exhibit that had mannequins in clothing from some of the older ladies who were "movers and shakers" in our local region. The clothes were rather plain except one bright salmon colored ski outfit. The children were in absolute awe and were freaking out, reading all the name brands out loud to each other. The spent a great deal of time standing at each mannequin. The children were like 8 years old. It was really weird. I wouldn't have cared about brands or little old lady clothes at 8.

Going broke to look rich has been a thing since forever. The only difference is people used to try to impress their neighbours and extended family, rather than random people on social media.

I live somewhat near Coachella but surprisingly, the traffic wasn’t as bad for the first weekend unlike past years. My family and coworkers noticed the difference (compared to last year) so maybe they’re giving up on attending the event. 😅

Imagine being able to take a month off work. I am currently not employable (agoraphobic and doing exposure therapy) and the guilt I feel for not working crushes me. I do not know a single person who could leave their job for a month and still have it, let alone for a hobby. Maybe my boyfriend could if he could prove he was in the hospital but only because he's in Canada working a unionized job. That lady is so lucky and privileged and I can't help but wonder if she even knows that

I see this quite a bit at my work too (I work at an elementary school) where a lot of the kids will show up with Stanley's or really expensive or luxury brand clothes (where they can). They'll even brag about how their parents have luxury cars too, it's pretty wild

My niece once told me how she made fun of a girl who wore the same jacket to school. I could not tell her that her dad (my brother) has been desperately job hunting for months and received a lot of cash from her grandad to keep them afloat. Would have been nice to humble her.

You know…this is the issue I have with kids these days. Will my kid be mentally tough enough to not feel a way if they don’t have the “cool thing”. It bugs me that kids these days are putting so much pressure on their parents to “fit in”…but then again, these parents may be wanting to “fit in” in their circles as well.

@@manoftomorrow5987 OMG you dont need to have an issue with kids cuz this 100% their parent's fault ,not like the girl was crying and making a scene for stanlet she just felt a little upset ,mom could sit and explain to the kid why she doesn't need a stanley but NO she just rushed out and bought one for her ,and she will probably do that same everytime ,LAZY parenting style

I don't mind people posting their collections of luxury goods or talking about expensive hobbies because i like seeing what people collect (as a collector myself). But its when they act like they HAVE to spend a bunch of money to do their hobby when its not true, thats when i have an issue. This woman 100% didn't HAVE to spend $25k on pickleball lol you can go to a local gym, reserve a court, and borrow racks/balls. Don't go into debt over a "hobby" to show off, it's not worth it!!!

My expensive hobby is buying books/manga. Like to the point that some of the employees at barnes and noble will let me know when they see something i may like or have my order as a recommendation for themselves as well. It's not that expensive, but it's probably the second most expensive thing i do (other than spinning since the spinning wheel was a piece of expensive equipment and fiber itself is not cheap for how quickly you can go through it) and just a bit more expensive than my third most expensive hobby crocheting (why buy a $15 blanket if you can buy $40 worth of yarn and crochet one over the course of 2 weeks?) Do i *have* to spend that money? Thankfully, no. Except for books (which i could go weekly to a bookstore and pick up at least 1 volume of something, or i could not go for a month and be just fine), all the other hobbies have cheaper workarounds. Even yarn. I'm always checking out estate sales because you can get an oil drum's worth of yarn for $10 sometimes. And leftover yarn pieces from your knitted/crochet'd projects can be spun into some wild yarns on a spinning wheel.

The Stanley story is actually so sad. Kids have always had an understanding of brand names, and I used to get bullied over my Walmart shoes instead of the Nikes everyone else had bc they were on the school website as a shoe option for the uniform. My dad is a two time cancer survivor, and we had NO money for extra stuff. It’s the same brand loyalty mess with a younger generation and it’s so sad. I was at least spared from the bullying until about 5th grade😭

The $250 paddles... I literally just looked them up and $250 is the most expensive paddle. Most are around $30 to $60. They even have some that are under that but they're probably pretty crappy. And for another $250 you can get 100 of the balls. My assumption is the $15,000 came from getting trainers and clothes and a pricey membership at a club that has a specific pickleball court. And yep there it is. She took a month off of work to learn a hobby designed for the elderly. And people are impressed with her? Dear God my elderly years are going to be terrifying.
