Bloody decent kit there, mate. May I just add 1 addition - a sponge or pot scrubber. These are now part of the Aussie Army Rations Accessories Packs.

A bit of his lye soap or ash from the fire pit with some leaves or grass can improvise for a decent scour brush.

That leather circle at the end is probably the most unexpected part of the kit. I like it.

I brought a 9 inch skillet, a cup and a spork on my last trip. My dream cook kit would probably add a Dutch oven and a tea kettle.

Oh yeh! Everything you really need. A good chef can cook anything in a kitchen...a great chef can cook on a hot rock! Jody Rocks!!! I am so pleased that you honor your instructors and their ideas! I have seen you do that many times... giving credit! When we move ego out of the way, we all learn more! Just want you to know someone notices that generosity of spirit that lives in you! Thank you for sharing!!!

I cut a small piece of wood to the diameter of my bag, gives a solid bottom and a cutting board. I will now have to cut a piece leather to that same diameter (pot holder, strop, etc) Awesome Video!!!

A fluffed out cotton ball or a bit of flax tow in the spice kit will keep the bottles from rattling around (or breaking!). Nice kit!

I am definitely adding a leather pot holder to my kit. I already have a thin aluminum disposable pie tin cutout on the bottom of my cookset bag to shield picnic tables from my alcohol stove, so a piece of leather for insulation from cold surfaces would help while cooking as well as doubling as a pot holder (I removed the handles from my titanium pot to save weight on long hikes), and I don't need to carry a pair of leather gloves in the summer. Thanks, Dan!

I've had my mouth washed out by lye soap many a time, I'm still alive. Lye is Caustic, not toxic but when mixed with fat, and water to make soap (After fully cured), or even cooked with it is perfectly fine because it is neutralized in the processes. Remember Lye can be made with wood ash, which is what my grandmother did.

If you are JUST starting out in this world of outdoor camping and want a nice starter kit, look into the GSI Haulite MicroDualist eating system. It has almost everything you need for your camp kitchen. Upgrades are welcome as you continue to bushcraft.

Love the "lye soap" comment. As a soapmaker, I know that the lye used in making soap is of no danger; it needs to set and cure for a few weeks (depending upon the recipe and amount used). Lye is a catalyst (saponification process) for the other ingredients that makes soap...soap! Some claim to "make" soap using a process called "melt and pour", which uses a base "soap" that has already been processed and thus has no lye content. Traditional soap made with lye doesn't have any lye content either, because it is neutralized during the process and no sodium hydroxide (lye) remains. Great kit! Similar to my own kit. I carry unscented soap of our own make for use afield; unscented so it doesn't attract bugs with perfumes. The bag is easy to replicate from an old pant leg. I like to use cargo pants for the cotton fabric and an added pocket on the bag!

My long distance cycle touring kitchen is based on Trangia27, with a thin, flexi plastic prep/cutting biard, dedicated food paring knife, spice kit inc small pepper piston grinder, wooden spoon, oil, tea, coffee, honey, stock cubes. Scouring cloth , dish cloth. I tried soap but reverted to detergent on camp sites. This is for real cooking; you cant live off plastic bag camping food for 3 months. My finest meal was a decent 3 course steak dinner. The cloth food bag is a good idea.

Perfect timing. I have an old metal Coleman cooler which I use as dry storage for my main camping kitchen, rope handles to put a pole through for two people to carry. But I have a new pack I'm trying to kit out for ranging, but not like one for distance backpacking. I have lots of options, and was trying to spread out all of my other cooking gear to see what I could use and what I still need. Great vid to help me sort my thinking. Thanks.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say, "spice bottles". 😂 Just kidding! If you look on his website under the description, under 'food and cooking' he sells the entire kit for $16.00 if they're in stock. It's a pretty good deal considering you probably couldn't get the stuff at the store for that.

Since you like spices, replace your salt with granulated garlic or powdered garlic. It takes about 2 weeks to get used to the change, but, garlic is good for you but salt is bad! If you still want salt, then make sure it is Himalayan sea salt; it has minerals that your body needs. Garlic affects your taste buds the same as salt, but salt is bad for you where garlic is good for you. Just thought you might like this tip. I like your videos, thank you!

Those pots from the old Boy Scout style mess kits suck big-time. Because they aren't very deep for their diameter, if food should shift to one side of the pot the ENTIRE CONTENTS of the pot will spill out in a micro-second! You would be best to trade it out for a deeper pot with a bail.

I was about ready to say that.. There is no way anyone is going to carry that kind of equipment with them.. Not unless they have a permanent campsite in the woods somewhere.. My little cooking tin it is round it looks like a little ufo😂😂.. That is all I need.. There's no way i'm going to carry a hundred pound bag of equipment.. All of these videos I have seen with the really large backpacks.. That is absolutely insane if you're going to do that then get yourself a mule A donkey.. Then you can name the donkey shrek😂😂😂..
