It is interesting to see how those photos from visting Tibet always pop up in every "motiational speech" and advocated as "freedom", while those who actually live there would give anything to have more comforable lives and most of all MONEY. Those poor folks struggle to feed the family, send kids to school, they become Sherpas to earn a living and often never return. They would give anything for a warm, comfortable home with enough space for everyone.... With other words, the grass always SEEMS greener on the other side. Travel is fantastic, as well as returning to the home you built. Enjoy both, don't just long for a life you don't happen to have... Xxx

So much truth to what he says. I haven't traveled enough though I moved to another country 10 years ago. You start questioning yourself, you start looking for ways to improve yourself. You start noticing how you can find common ground with complete strangers compared to before you gained all that traveling experience. Last but not least you can also straight away recognize if the person before you is the same - traveling, filled to the brim with multi-cultural experience.

I was born and raised in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico and now visit my folks in Laredo, Texas where they have been the last 15 years of their lives. Being born right on the border and educated on both countries, I also feel as if I do not belong to either one. What he says, its absolutely true. July 31st will mark two years since I quit my job and started my 'gap' time off. That 'gap' has not finished yet, and don't see it finishing anytime soon. I was blessed with my first solo backpacking experience to Europe during a 6 week trip. Completely changed my perception of life and will never look back to my old 50hr/week job lifestyle. Since then, all I can think of is where am I going next? So far, 11 countries and counting. Thank you Luis for sharing your story! Great message from a very experienced traveller! As someone who has travelled a bit, travelling is most of the time just escapism. When I go I feel great but often times I feel empty when I come back. Travelling can help you wind up and teach yourself some things especially if you're young or after a tough situation but let's not glorify escapism because that's what most of the time we do.
@chelseanzualo55224 жыл бұрын
As a traveler love, I must say traveling shouldn't be seen as a mechanism of escape but a method to take time to think better. We can't run away from problems or even the good things in life, for me traveling is like reading a book, learning about something new which will give my mind different perspective of life. I truly believe problems can only be solved by recognition, acceptance and understanding the situation we're in and take responsibility of our action.

More than traveling, I enjoy living in a foreign country. When I was 17 I went to Canada for 3 months to improve my English, during my bachelor I did a semester abroad in Shanghai, China and I wrote my master thesis in Bolivia (6 months). Since 1 and a half years I am living in Bangkok, Thailand. The reason for that is that I grew up Bilingual and in two cultures (German and Latin), so moving from one country to another was a normal thing for me and now I cannot stop. But I understand my German friends that never left their home country. Some people are happy with their place their staying and they prefer to have a simple life where they know everything around them. And there is nothing bad about that.

Travel experience is far more rewarding than any outfit no matter the label it has. It fills your heart with love, gratitude and happiness. It turns you into a more worldy person, more respectful and aware that we are the extras of this film called 'life'. That the world belongs to nature not to us and it is here for us to enjoy it.

I have decided I will save up as much money as possible and begin travelling sometime next year. I will quit my job and go because it has been my dream for the longest time and I am finally ready to go and adventure as much of the world as I can. This TED talk really opened my eyes, inspiring words, thank you!

I've just spent half a year in the US as a language student seeking for adventures. I found them and I totally agree with everything you said. It was absolutely transformative experience! It helped me to understand both me and people around me and figure out what to do next with my life. And I'm in late 20s. Thanks for the inspiring speech!

Fantastic Luis! I've spent most of my adult life doing exactly what you say to do. You have validated my choices and inspired me to continue along my "road". I'm pleased to have met you in Jordan but wished I could have really met you, gotten to know you better. Next time. Cheers, Garvey.

You’re so funny , that line about if you have young kids 😂 . I’m inspired though, thank you! Also reminder to u reading this to ‘travel and explore’ your own city more! Drive 10 min away and walk a mile, take a different route somewhere, ride a bike, try a new coffee shop

I've been doing this. Just traveled the entire east coast from north to south this past summer, this is just the beginning for me. I got home and started selling my stuff so I can go to Europe next summer. I'm becoming a minimalist with the desire to travel every summer. I stopped buying and now and using my money to travel. It's in my blood 😃

Travelling is one of the most efficient ways for anyone to realise that nationalism is nothing but an illusion and to look at the bigger picture. You are not an American or Mexican or Brazilian or African or Asian or any other category. You are a human being and you should look and respect others as a fellow human being. Peace!

Travel can let you know that there are more good and beautiful people all around the world, it reduces our misconception towards certain groups or races of peoples. It reminds us that we all are same living in same beautiful planet called earth. Since my teenager I have never been at same place, now I am 25 years old. Travelling have actually led to certain circumstances which have revealed me to myself. I start knowing myself better and hence learn to respect every people in a better way. I was an introvert and so it was hard for me to initiate a conversation or anything, but today I feel more confident than many in an around or even in my classes. I am going to complete my MBA this year. Hope to learn more from beautiful people on this beautiful earth. Grateful❤

Also totally agree. I spent my childhood school years in New Jersey and summers in Jamaica in the 70's. My parents are both from Jamaica and made sure, I knew where they came from. I think it had a deep impact on me, I've always loved exploring. A few years ago, I quit my job and moved to Southeast Asia, living in Thailand and Bali. That short time I spent abroad, was filled with the most memorable experiences of my entire life! Returning to the states and trying to explain to friends and family, how life-changing the experience was, was only disappointing. Disappointing, because, not many, really seemed that interested. I am currently in Florida, but I am planning to continue long-term travel in Asia, South America, and Europe. I relate to what Luis said in this talk and loved all the facts and statistics to bring attention to this issue in the United States especially!

Loved this! I have both the US passport and my Mexican passport. I was born and raised in the States but recently learned that if one or two of my parents were born in Mexico, I could have dual-citizenship and I could also have both passports. The best decision of my adventurous life. ✈️ I pray we can all get back to traveling soon. 🙏🏾🦠🙏🏾

I have had many similar realizations because of my travels too. Traveling is about seeing differences but also similarities. It's about learning other people's cultures but also that we are all humans. These helped me to better understand the importance of open mindedness and empathy towards others.
