As a quilter, I’ve done oodles of binding. I’ve also made several of these vinyl project bags. To avoid the thread and needle punctures showing on the front, sew your binding to the back and wrap around to the front, stitching from the front side. Any unevenness or thread going off kilter will then be on the back where your fabric and quilting is and should blend in much easier and be barely noticeable, especially if your bobbin thread matches your fabric on the back. 😊

I was going to say DON'T RIP IT OUT! it will leave holes in the vinyl. I agree with wrapping to the front for the cleanest finish, plus you can have some fun with a simple decorative stitch like serpentine or blanket. Tip I read somewhere was to save zipper bags that bedding comes in. A good gauge of vinyl for these things. I thought that looked like Erica's bag. I think Sew Very Easy has one too that looked pretty good Love your bags. Great fabric

That's a great tip I've always sewn it on the front and hand stitched to the back. This sounds so much easier and less time consuming. Thanks

@@FarrellFocus PS something I do for an easier miter is to keep uppermost the side I'm stitching and wrap the adjacent piece underneath. I think it makes a neater corner because you can control it better.

Your project bags look great and they’re so useful. Happy slow sewing on your trips. I made some a while ago and there’s a quicker method that worked for me - no separate binding. -Instead, cut the back at least 1” larger on all sides. -Make the front and back sections as usual. -When assembling, centre the front piece over the back piece and trim so there’s the same amount extra all around (doesn’t need to be exactly 1” but does need to be even). -Use the extra fabric to fold in twice and make easy pretend binding. (First fold is raw edge of the back in to meet raw edge of front piece. Then fold over again so the new folded edge is the inside “binding” edge.) -Clip in place. Corners can take a bit of faffing around to get neat. -Top stitch close to the inside edge of the binding. Ta-DA!🎵 Tips: -Glue or narrow double-sided tape (like for scrapbooking) can help hold the things in place for stitching. I use it for zips, binding and vinyl. -Match top and bobbin thread to the back fabric for stitching down the binding. -An edge stitching foot is brilliant at keeping really close to the binding edge in a nice even line. -If the presser foot “sticks” to the vinyl, try a piece of masking or painters tape on the underside of the foot, and trim to the shape of the foot before using. I hope someone finds this helpful. 🧵

I’ve made lots of these and sometimes use mesh on the front and back to wash delicate or baby items in, like socks, bras. Also an easy way to bind is round off your corners and use fold over elastic to bind. So easy and colorful too. My friend bought a clear shower curtain and sewed a bunch of bags.

I love these bags. I have made several that I use for my cross stitch. There are some You tubers that are also making them with all fabric. I think making them is kind of addicting!

I love these project bags also. I made two of them myself. Only I put quilted material 2 or 4 in high along the bottom so needles or scissors will not poke a hole in the vinyl. so fun to make these bags.

Cute! You may what scissor sheaths or go and pick up some knitting needle stoppers. That may not be the technical term but they're rubber pointy things to keep your stitches on. You can put them on the tips of your scissors to prevent getting holes in your vinyl. Another fun project you can make is a thread holder thingy - again I don't know the technical name but essentially it's used to to put the embroidery thread on once you cut a piece and if you split the floss into less than the 6 strands - if that makes sense. Just cut a square maybe 5 or 6 inches of batting and backing fabric and just zigzag stitch around the edges or you can get fancy and put binding around it. You can also make it a rectangle and make a needle book out of it. I also watch that channel but I haven't made anything from it. She has such a soothing voice and demeanor. Have fun!

Super cute. The material in the first one is my favorite and I absolutley love the binding in the second one. You do the cutest stuff. When you do the binding do the back side first (you'll probably have to put some paper underneath the plastic so it doesn't snag on feed dogs) then pull to the front and top stitch...easier, love the third one.

Adorable project bags and lovely slow stitching project, Stephanie! 💗 I love Erica’s designs…and free quilt blocks and embroidery. I recently watched a vlog making these bags entirely on the serger. It was awesome! One of the tips she gave was to use invisible thread for basting, and using it in the bobbin for adding binding. I think they were in the same vlog. 😂 I watch so many I get confused. 😊

I recently tried these (the larger size) and have one left cut up and ready to sew. My garment sewing projects fit just fine in them. However, I want to make many more. I used exposed decorative sewing themed zippers from Missouri Star Quilt Company and home decor weight Lori Holt's Happy Place Fabric Line. I love them. I found another tutorial that I'd like to try by Rosie's Art Studio titled "Lets Sew a Clear View Project Pouch. In the video, she says not to use anything lighter than 16 gauge vinyl but I think I can get away with 12 gauge. Once the project is inside it firms up the pouch a bit.

If you don't want to see your binding stitches on the front of your pouch, start by sewing your binding onto your pouch on the back side first (not the front side first). BTW: You can usually find vinyl remanent pieces at JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby, and WalMart.

Geez.... Thanks-a-lot Stephanie.... Now " I " have to make some project bags before I leave on Fridays plane gahhhhh....I was just going to vegetated this week to rest from last week's road trip. But I can see where I need several even though I have many project bags from Staples. These are just tooooo cute with all that quilting fabric in my stash from the 90's. Good thing I have many zippers and a roll of clear vinyl. But I hate sewing on binding. HATE IT

If you stitch the binding onto the front, fold over to the back and hand stitch it down, you don’t have the stitching showing in the front. Love your bags.

Hi Stephanie, your project bags turned out great and I really like your fabric choices. I am a quilter so I've sewn many bindings and I've made several bags along the way. The holes in your vinyl are permanent, they will not go away. So don't ever use sewing pins, but clips instead. The gauge of vinyl should be 16 gauge. Also, when sewing vinyl, if it sticks to the bed on your sewing machine, put some tissue paper under it. I suggest you go on KZbin and look up videos on quilt bindings. What size did you cut for the binding? A rule of thumb is 2.5 inches. Erica's videos are great. Another creator who makes bags with vinyl is The Crafty Gemini. It's always fun to make something different and useful.

Stephanie, Maybe you should make or buy something to put around the points on your scissors, so they don't go through the vinyl. Have fun on your trips. Sending Light and to you and your husband for safe travels. ❤
