This is my go-to gift. I box the four corners which makes the tissue stack fit better. They make a cute gift for the mother of the bride and the ladies in a wedding party. Make them in the wedding theme colors and attach a poem: Tears of Joy, Tears of laughter, Tear's of happily ever after.

When I made these years ago, I cut the lining fabric slightly larger than the outer fabric so when you flipped it out, it had 'built in' trim :)

Apparently pressing is when you put it down and pick it up without much movement to prevent distorting the fabric and ironing is when you slide the iron around. Who knew! At my house the words are interchangeable. 😂

I was just coming here to say this! Press is to put your iron down without sliding it around (mostly done in crafting and quilting). Ironing is done to clothing and such, when “ironing” wrinkles out.

I was raised by my grandparents and my Grandma always stressed the difference. Pressing is used during construction so you can get crisp folds. But always when you are ironing things like shirt plackets, pleats and hems.

Years ago when my kids were small the kindergarten teacher asked me if I could come up with an idea for the children to make for Mother’s Day gifts. So I came up with the tissue pouch using crayon batik. I gave them a piece of white cotton and told them to draw all over it things they thought their mother would like. We supervised so we could encourage them to colour a lot. I took them home and ironed them, folded them similarly to the way you did, and sewed the same as you did. I never thought about a swivel hook, besides the teachers budget for craft supplies is so depleted by that time of the school year that she couldn’t afford it. Many many years later at one of my daughters friends wedding we were chatting about those kindergarten years and several of the moms still had that gift and still used it. We did that craft more than 40 years ago. Back then there were no home computers, no internet, and no Pinterest for ideas for crafts. I like to give my hairdresser a little gift every year at Christmas so this twigged my memory. And I thought what if I make a double sided on with tissues on one side and a pocket on the back side to slip a couple of disposable COVID masks because you never know when you might need one. I have a big box of masks that I bought a few months ago so it will be a no cost gift.

@@PinCutSew it turned out better than my previous one the year before. Back then in the dark ages we used to have local TV in the afternoons (we had 2 channels back then) I saw this fun idea on TV. It was the part time weather girl that did “women’s stuff” on the show. When the teacher asked if I had something for Mother’s Day using baby food jars. And this craft sounded lovely. It was a home made milk bath recipe that you could put in jars and put a fabric circle on the lid with a rubber band and a ribbon over that and it was really cute. I think there was even a cute label for the jars that the kids signed and attached them to the lid. A couple of years later I was at school again (stay at home mom, 4 kids in elementary school, what can I say, I lived there) The teacher called out to me and said “I have a funny story for you. I had forgotten my fancy milk bath and saw it on the shelf and decided to try it. I opened the jar and all I could smell was sour milk! It just reeked!” The mixture was powdered milk, epsom salts, something to make it smell nice I can’t recall what we used but something clearly reacted to the milk powder. I hope the moms all used theirs up immediately and no one got a yogurt bath!

Hi Nikki! I want to comment on the ironing issue. People have been saying ironing as a verb for a very long time. Many years. It's OK and proper to use that word as a verb. Ironing is a verb too! If you are moving the iron over the fabric you are indeed ironing. If you are just setting the iron over the fabric and pressing down, with or without steam...you're pressing. I have a sewing book that explains the difference, lol!

I think sometimes quilters get hung up on ironing vs pressing because they see them as different things with different motions. I know I've seen videos where they say that ironing uses a lot more "swishing" movements, whereas pressing is literally, press and lift... which is better for not stretching your piecing fabrics out of shape. But on its own, ironing is definitely a verb! Not related to this video, but your trick on making a little "pocket" for the binding has really improved my stress levels for making a quilt! Thank you for that!

I've made a lot of these for gifts over the years...and for my purse and car. So useful and pretty! I don't like to have to buy the travel tissues so I fold tissues in thirds and stack them. If it's for a gift, I add a cardstock rectangle at the bottom with instructions to refill. I just made a lip balm holder/keychain from a free pattern from Apple Green Cottage. Super cute, easy to make and I like that there's a top with a snap to secure it. Also, my favorite fabric bookmarks are the corner ones. They just stay so nice in books.

I've always used ironing as a verb. But I did learn recently that there's a difference between that and pressing. Apparently with pressing you don't move the iron, you pick it up and put it down. I always thought the two were interchangeable. Also - I've made some coffee sleeves for gifts! I increased the seam allowance though because ¼" is hard. I'm putting them with a Starbucks card (regular gift for my kids). Also doing bowl cozies, car coasters, and some other stuff I can't remember right now. My mom and I always say that our legacy will be unfinished grocery lists and used tissues in our pockets. So this is a perfect gift for her. And me too!

IMO "iron" might not have always been a verb but it certainly is now. English is a living language changing all the time. What I saw you do was iron. Pressing is down then up, down then up, moving the iron when it's not on the fabric, pressing is not moving side to side. Super cute idea. Gonn a make pillowcases this week.

The pins are Magic Pins, the mini iron is Sharper Image. The wool ironing mat, I’m not sure the brand, but I went on Amazon and picked something not too cheap and not too pricey! Don’t use it with steam on a surface that you don’t want damaged and also don’t use it at all on top of a cutting mat because the heat will warp it!
