I Took an Autonomous Taxi in China (But is it SAFE?) 你敢坐吗？

I went to the city of Guangzhou, in Guangdong Province, to hail an autonomous, driverless robotaxi. Driverless vehicles have become a common sight in Guangzhou, and it's one of the best places to experience being in a driverless car whilst riding through traffic.
I've previously taken a ride on an autonomous bus run, part of the WeRide fleet, also in Guangzhou. But I've never been in a driverless taxi. The autonomous taxi I hailed was part of the Baidu Apollo fleet, and the model that turned up was a Hongqi E-HS3 model! I've also never been inside a Hongqi car before, so this was a double first for me!
What happened when a bus pulled out on us? And what happened when another car cut us up at the traffic lights?
And what happened when I arrived at my destination, which also happened to be the site of China's SPACE BREEDING PROGRAM!

I believe the reason why there is someone behind the wheel is because the reliability and safety of self-driving has yet to reach a stage where it should be. Every time a self-driving car hit the road, it is actually undergoing a trial run and the more data are gathered, the better the system will be. Things will get better and better and perhaps, the day we can totally trust and rely on self-driving cars will become a reality soon.

Stu, thanks for sharing your travel experience in China and i can show them to my friends in Australia who haven't benn to China before. And they got way to much of one side story from social media here. I am looking forward to coming back to hometown Guanddong this year and try this taxi by myself. They are absolutely cool. In Beijing, you could actually select if you want a safety driver or not. I guess in Guangzhou, the government is more cautious?

There's only one area in Beijing where you can use them though. It's quite far from the centre.

I'm excited for autonomous vehicles because I hate driving after about 20 minutes. 😆 Also, I'm excited to see China rolling out humanoid robots in the near future. By 2025 they said they will mass produce them. I think in the future, they should put a kill switch in the back seat for the passenger. Just in case they feel like something has gone wrong, the car will come to a safe stop and put on it's emergency lights.

Recently I've seen a video of someone taking driveless taxi in China, probably Shanghai IIRC, without any human driver/assistant. Everything was automated. And it worked. So here the Chinese are ahead of rest of the world already. They innovate and implement new tech at very high rate, second to none.

中国2024年全面放开无人自动驾驶。也就是中国在2024年自动驾驶可以不需要安全员了，但是乘客是不允许在司机的位置的，也就是就算没有安全员，车内也只能坐三个人。 中国已经有没有放向盘和刹车控制的车辆了，主要用于城市交通的士！也就是可以坐四个人的，没有司机位的车辆。
