I always travel with one of my Rolex's or Omega's and a G-Shock. Generally I always wear the nice watch but I have needed to put the watch in my pocket a few times when I'm in certain areas! A lot of airports I have been to do make you take the watch off so usually I will hide it away in my bag before they even tell me to do it. I don't want to be standing around lots of people and security making a scene and then everyone watches me having to take off a nice watch and put it in my bag!

I travel quite a lot, and I always follow the golden rule; " Do not take with you what your are not willing to leave behind" That being I always take my seiko SKX for day/ water activities, for and everyday watch my Victorinox Airboss mechanical Chrono Blue dial, and for more formal ocassions, my FM Crazy hours SS, blue dial, alligator strap. They all have a place and purpose in my collection, however, they could be replaced/bought again easily should I need to.

Timex & Casio made the perfect travel watches lineup, no fuss & hassles. Keep a 3-watch roll, with a Casio Royale on wrist, and in the roll, an Ironman, and Duro on a leather strap. Swap out the Duro for a dressier one if a business meeting/conference is involved.

Ditto on the Casio Royale. Wear it with a nice Vario leather strap. It is the go everywhere look low maintenance low profile watch lol. I usually keep just one other watch, something dressy.

I’ve been really surprised to hear that you are from Napoli, I’m from Pompei. I would say that you are right regarding Napoli, like all the big city in Europe maybe is not safe to walk around with a Rolex, but for people that visit other cities in that area like Pompei, Amalfi, Capri, Positano, Sorrento I can guarantee it is totally safe, you can wear the watch you like! Anyhow I’m proud of your successful watch channel, thanks for your video and advices!

Airport security is a nightmare. Flew into NYC last year and had to take off my nice watch and put it in a plastic container with all my other valuables. This then traveled through an x-ray machine and then sat with several other containers while I got x-rayed. My boots had metal in them so I was taken aside and had to remove them and was searched. All the while, my $5000 watch was sitting in that plastic container while about half a dozen people of varying quality, walked by it. I was lucky. A rather bored looking lady was clearing my bag and I said, "What happens if someone steals something out of the containers?" Her answer was "Not my problem Sir, move on." I would have burned her ears if she wasn't in a position of authority at that time. I understand the need for security but surely they could have a better system?. Next time I'll take a Casio..

I grew up in Belgrade, in the 90's. War struck city, poverty and lots of criminal. During those years, it was common for elementary school kids like myself, to be robbed of their sneakers or other clothes, sometimes at knife or gun point. Now, Belgrade is one of the safest cities in Europe. So, I have a small, but quite valuable collection, with a few high end pieces, and to be honest, when I travel abroad, I wear a casio f-91w, with an exception of a seaside vacations, when I wear a frogman. I don't know, it might be an overreaction on my side, but I just don't feel safe, outside of my city (country). Maybe it is a kind of "PTSP" going back to my childhood, but I just can't help it.

It's not overreaction, enjoy your trip, and not worry you maybe out an expensive watch. I would take my Doxa Sub 200 at the most. While never been to Serbia, I have been to Croatia. I'm glad there is stability for the most part.

Federico is absolutely right, the TSA does not require you to remove your watch, and if they do refuse. My rule of selecting places to travel, is that if I’m not comfortable wearing my Rolex down the street, I don’t need to be there.

I heard somewhere that when entering a country with your watches, you should declare your watches at customs to avoid being hit with a tax or duty when leaving the country or returning to the U.S. If that's not necessary, then what prevents me from going to, say London, buying a watch, and returning to the U.S. without declaring it and paying any import duty?

@jacobd2057

You should do this before leaving the US. You can register the serial numbers of your watches to prove you did not buy them abroad. If you can't prove you bought the watch in the US then you can be charge import taxes when returning. How likely is this to happen? Probably not very likely but better safe than sorry especially if you're traveling with many thousands of dollars of watches. www.cbp.gov/document/forms/form-4457-certificate-registration-personal-effects-taken-abroad

I travel about 300k miles a year and mostly to SE Asia. Granted I dont have anything better than a Tudor, but depending if I travel business or first depends on the watch I travel with. If I have to fly coach I go casio world time, but if business at least I go Oris Aquis, Longines hydroconquest, etc... I agree I always check anything around 1500 or more I check at hotel concierge those safes at the hotel even 5 stars are sketchy.. the concierge always gives you a itemized card by a international hotel so I feel safe. When going out if a nice restaurant I wear a nice watch, but just to kick around I always rock a casio g shock or worldtime. If I'm exploring never wear any watch that looks expensive even a skx.. Vietnam considers a skx a high end. Key is don't flaunt anything that has a high end value in a country in which your watch might be worth more than the yearly median income

When I was in Bologna Italy in 2016 I was wearing a Skagen...a bleeding Skagen! And the driver of the shuttle I was in asked me about my travel plans and I mentioned I was going to Napoli/Naples and his eyes got the size of saucers 😳 and looked at my watch and said to put the watch in my pocket when I'm there because, "you go there and they see this watch, they take the knife...(makes sawing motion on my wrist) and they take from you." I had just gotten to Italy from Beirut and can say I felt safer in the anarchist neighborhoods of Hamra in Beirut than that guy made me feel.

Federico...You are doing a great channel. Congrats! Greetings from Switzerland! Quick question: have you done a video elaborating why to spend money in watches with a complication like chronograph? who uses that? i think some cronos like Daytona are beautiful but it is 99,9% of the time useless...i am building my collection with GMT complication because I use it all the time...but I really wonder to buy watches with features that are useless...I do not want to be picky but why to buy a watch that is water 300m resistant? okay...watches look great but i cannot see the point...but this is just an opinion...i respect other opinions..what is yours? if you have covered the topic, can u share the link? I am curious to know your opinion about that!

I wear one watch, and put my second travel watch in a hard shell watch pouch in my carry-on bag. I usually only wear S/S Rolex sports watches. Out and about in countries where I do not want to be jumped by a mob, I wear long sleeves shirts, so I can hide the wrist. A NATO strap also makes a sports watch look cheap from a distance, and can be used as camouflage.

I travel a lot for work and play (>60% on the road) and believe in wearing my watches (Patek/RM) not every day, but regularly. I carry a sock with me and use the sock to go through airport security as well as to keep my watch in my pocket if/when I am in high traffic and or risky public areas. Get legitimate watch insurance, stay alert for "spotters" (who in bigger cities look for "marks"), and do not wear your expensive piece when/if you are unclear (aka - safety) of your route to/from your desired location.

Personally I don't like those soft watch rolls. They can squeeze and damage your watches, even when in a suitcase or carry-on bag. When I travel, I like to use a hard-shell G-Shock watch box to put in my luxury watches. And I would wrap my gold watch with a soft polishing cloth. ⌚✈🏔🏖🏜🏤
@biohayzer
@biohayzer 4 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. You can pick up a whole different number of single/double/triple hard shell travelling cases. Those rolls would only be good for watches with leather straps that lay completely flat but even at that there is still a fear they can get crushed🤷🏻‍♂️

I.e. When entering Mexico customs require to declare money, checks, jewelry etc exceeding 10kUSD. They say you won't pay any import duties because it's your personal items (depending on qty, of course) but they say declaration is needed. Of course if it's on your wrist they won't question it, but let's say he customs agent had a bad day and they wantto be picky...of course the Seiko is not worth more than 10G, but what if they see a Sub or a GMT?

yep already heard it from John, but I'm still disappointed that you didn't get a GS on the secondary market. By the way do you even own a GS? I have a 9F and a Spring Drive and I love them to bits. On topic, I honestly would never wear a watch that expensive in 3rd world countries. I wear a G-Shock GW 5000 to those places and an Aquaracer in relatively safe countries like Hungary. I only ever wear my good watches in core Europe. I wouldn't even take something other than the Aquaracer to the US tbh. Coming to think of it I took my JLC Master Control to Canada though.

What do you all think? Would you wear an ORIS Aquis as your every day beater or in unsafe places where you want to keep a lower profile?

I don’t personally take anything on holiday I would feel gutted if I lost. Thats cloths, electrical and watches. The one exception is my camera which I own for travel pictures. Most of Europe is relatively safe but all major cities have numerous pickpockets One exception might be London where there are Rolex mugging thieves in better areas.

Do you insurance all your watches or only the expensive one? I figured it wouldn't be worth it to insure my inexpensive watches. If someone wants to steal my SKX or Turtle, it wouldn't bother me too much. I did insure my Omegas, so I think the price point where I considering insuring my watches are at 2000 USD. As to travel, I usually put the watch in the bag I'm travelling with. Here in Europe, they generally ask you to put your phone/wallet/keys/watch in your bag so it works fine.

I usually take only one nice watch, so I don’t have to think of my others when i leave my hotel. There is always the risk for theft, but you should only wear the watch you can rebuy when traveling abroad..

I think if I was to travel, I'd take my Seiko SARX055 Baby Snow Flake and my Seiko SBDC053 if traveling to just to keep under the radar, if like going to family in Boca Raton, I'd bring my Omega Speedmaster Pro Moon watch, and either my Omega 300m Seamaster, and maybe something on or two others. Of course it would change depending where I go, Europe, wouldn't worry much, other places I would. Nothing written in stone. Tissot, Alpinist, Doxa, Nomos, and Sttowa all depending. Even my Big Eye which was bought at DelRay Watch. Everybody has their own feelings and choices, no right or wrong. In any case, all of you keep safe.

Never, ever leave anything of value in a hotel room when you're out. Numerous friends have lost watches, cameras, laptops, when they left items in a room, all over the world.

First Federico, I have learned so much from your videos. My Question does Polished watch mean done by Jeweler? I use Jeweler cloth to keep looking nice. What’s the advantage of Polish vs Non Polish. Thank you for a great education in horology . Jon P not Del Ray John.

Thanks for these tips Fed. You certainly are brave to travel with fine watches! I go with Swatch in exotic locations myself. 😂 FYI, you can declare your watches and any other expensive goods at customs BEFORE you leave the US or Canada. This declaration is good forever. Then never a question about where you bought your watch. Also, not all policies insure for foreign travel.

I personally never travel with my expensive watches,way too big a risk. I only travel with two beater watches a Casio g shock and an orient bambino ,they cover me for all occasions casual and dressy . If I lose them no biggy I just replace them for my next trip.

Saw a video from Paris recently where they showed a CCTV footage of a customer walking in a salon and three robbers who might have followed him, took away his patek forcibly and ran away! It was horrible. I don’t usually travel with an expensive watch. An Apple watch is safer and better bet hence.

Thanks for the comment on Rolex, Fed. Rolex is low down on my list of dream watches. I'd rather get an Omega first. Rolex has done what DeBeers tried to do with diamonds: artificially high prices via an artificial shortage. With the advent of perfect synthetic diamonds, Debeers and other diamond companies are faltering. Covid-19 has not helped them. I hope that Rolex gets its comeuppance, for their arrogant attitude towards customers. If there is karma, Rolex might end up being the Langendorf Watch Company SA, of the 21st century.
