On the way to Roatan, we decided to do a little stopover in Utila. The sail there was one of Karl's fastest ever and we ended up having to heave to for a couple of hours because we were way faster than expected.
Unfortunately, I have to drop of Tom very soon for a job in Roatan, so we were rushing through a little bit.
But even despite that and despite the bad weather it has been a nice stopover.
Enjoy and Ahoy,
Nike & Karl

You've been an inspiration to many it seems, which is certainly my case as you've propelled me to go on my Winded Voyage. Since I've been watching your series, I've got a boat, a slip, developed a series, and spent the past several month studying and passing tests to get my sailing license. Unlike other countries, I'm Swiss and must go through a quite a series of hurdles and exams. Hope to hold my license to be free very soon. Thanks for inspiring:-)

We don't need a minimum to print, just wanted to make sure we inly print the ones that have been ordered so there are no costs that cannot be covered in the end. I will know tomorrow if the final orders will cover the canal costs completely, but it is looking not too bad :)

It's great that you had the opportunity to run into people that you've inspired to live the dream. You are inspiring to many of us who watch. I live on my boat in BC (Canada) and love watching Untie the Lines, as it inspires me to keep learning, and jumping out in the waters around here on my boat.

Nike, I am also one of those people inspired by you. I look forward to Friday's for two reasons. One is it's Friday, and I have the weekend off!! You videos are the second reason.Your skills with the camera, and the way you seamlessly tell your story is really unparalleled. I think I can speak for all of your viewers when I say thank you for taking us along on your amazing journey.

No doubt you've inspired many folks to untie the lines. Your restoration of Karl and your sail reportage has been both remarkable and accessible to all. Power to you. You've inspired me too - though I struggle with the idea of trading in my farm for a home at sea when rising sea levels effect marinas and provisioning due to coastal mayhem. Enjoy the hay day while it lasts. My adventures may have to be on a smaller boat while I keep the farm and my long term food security. xoxo

You helped inspire me and my wife Kriemhilde also! We just bought a Catalina 350 in Annapolis MD. We are sailing the weekends on the Chesapeake bay, hoping to untie the lines and head for the islands in a few years when she can retire. She is also German by the way! From Worms, but her mother, who was just here for a visit, lives nearby your hometown in lovely Celle. Keep the videos coming and safe sailing!

No, it did not bother us because it was not really super bad. It's not that I have never gotten upset about reports that were not right...especially if it results into you having to beat into stuff...but also with that I am trying to learn to accept what nature puts out there for you...which is not always easy but I found that if u let go of ur anger, it does help a lot! He does, right? I watched the beginning if the vid an thought "wow, what a boat" ;) Seems like looks do matter a bit after all...but I think for me it is more that with his paint job and the change of rig people finally begin to see in Karl what I have seen in him from the beginning: a sturdy little boat that will keep u safe out there if u take care of some basic maintainance...fingers crossed :) Ahoy, Nike & Karl

Thanks again for a well done video. Your ability to share your emotions along with the story is rare and welcomed. From the excitement in this video to the frustrations in older ones, my wife and I really get a feel for what you are experiencing. Can't wait to get our boat off the hard so we can experience it on our own boat finally. Luckily, our mildew experience wasn't as extreme as yours. :-)

Good luck to the two of you! Great to hear that you are planning to go out there an play a bit :). And yes, there is both frustration and joy in cruising but the joy does take up most of it, obviously, otherwise there would not be so many of us out there ;) Ahoy, Nike & Karl

@@WhiteSpotPirates I'm not clear that "so many of us out there"" means that it must be worth it. Can you imagine South Pacific Islanders going through great pains to sail around? I get a lot from the vids, but near zero inspiration to duplicate anyone's sailing journey. Why? Because I am content. (BTW- Yes, I owe compensation for my squatting this channel venture during covid.)

Love 'em all........ hey... have you considered getting a tiller extension so you can sit on either side while you steer? Might be a little more comfortable..... or ... maybe not. Just a thought. Stay fabulous.
@WhiteSpotPirates
@WhiteSpotPirates 8 жыл бұрын
So far I have not thought about it. i sometimes use a line and lead it around one of my reling posts and then I can sit in other spots (actually steered like that from inside the other day in a thunderstorm because I was afraid of the lightning ;). I guess an extension would not be too difficult to build, might think about it, thx. Ahoy, Nike & Karl

A little gauge on how to tell wind velocity . White caps start at about 12 to 15 at about 20 you get those smooth lines going perpendicular to the waves At 30 you get those crazy cat paws dancing all over. at 40 the white caps start to get blown off the tops of the waves and at 50 you pee yourself, well at least in my experience...
@WhiteSpotPirates
@WhiteSpotPirates 8 жыл бұрын
Thx for the list Robert, that's how I usually classify wind as well. But waves always look different on videos (usually less) and I am just trying to give you a rough idea about a timespan, not about that particular moment that you might see when I am saying it. That's why I would say 10-20 because the winds might be changing from 10-20 in the last 5-10 hours, not because I am not sure if it is actually 10 or 20 ;). And well, you see urself from your gauge that there is quite a bit inbetween as well, and I think it also depends on facts such as is wind maybe going against current / old swell from a different direction, which would e.g. cause white caps earlier than 15 and stuff like that. That's why I usually go by a range of 10-15 rather than by "this is 15 knots". Also because for me that is enough precision...but I know for some it's not. My dad is one of those latter ones so I have to install a wind measure in the next weeks before going into the Pacific because he does my weather routing and gets frustrated with my "12-15" rather than one exact number ;). Ahoy, Nike & Karl
@robertkowalski9906
@robertkowalski9906 8 жыл бұрын
Oh I wasn't questioning your wind speed, you just had that look of "not sure" so I figured I'd share. You know those ano-nano-damo-momer-mit-ters, are known liars, but they are nice that you don't have to look up to the windex all the time. I think your pretty salty. ;-)

What's the fastest you have had Karl ? I've only had my boat "The Janie "up to 7 knots but the previous owner had it up to 18 knots in the Gulf of Mexico. She was creeking & popping on the verge of braking something. She's a S-2-22.

hm, the fastest I sailed him down a wave with wind from the back was 9,4 knots :). 18 knots just sounds a bit too scary...He was doing fine with the 9,4, it did not feel out of controll or anything...but I prefer to have him around 7 ;) Ahoy, Nike & Karl
