Finally, I am back to solo sailing, grooving slowly into it by doing small daytrips along the coast of Roatan. Karl and me are prepping ourselves for the next bigger passage up to Mexiko and I am exploring the beautiful bays of Roatan with my new kayak!
Enjoy and Ahoy,
Nike & Karl

you are the captain of your boat. if you think you need a crew member on your boat for a passage then you should do that. you are a solo sailor. i see you doing it there. but a longer passage you need someone on watch so you can sleep... that's understandable and you should not feel bad about that. you are one of the best volgs on the web and we all inspire to be as good as you... you rock girl...

Hi. You are very bold and adventuresome. Don't stick your head in the sand (water) by refusing to change your plans once you see they need changing.. You are very brave, and that along with wisdom will help you enjoy years of healthy, happy sailing. If anyone suggests that you wimped out, they don't have your best interests at heart. Safe travels.

You have already put in the hard work as a sailboat owner, rehabbing Karl to make it the nice boat that it is. It is good to see you finally get to where you are...sailing. This is where you had hoped to start on day one, but Karl was not ready, even though your were. You transformed Karl. That makes you a sailor...a good one too. It doesn't matter whether you go alone or have someone aboard. We just want you to fulfill your dream, and be so kind as to share your experience with us. Thanks and best winds to you.

I think folks love the channel because you're loving what you do. Sometimes you stretch yourself to move a little out of your comfort zone, but always safely, never too much, never too soon. If you're enjoying yourself, or learning in a safe way it will make great content that is fun to watch. Whether you are alone or sharing with others is kind of irrelevant. You are already doing both! Thanks for sharing the personal stuff. Your dreams, hopes, ambitions, ideas and challenges make it all the more engaging.

Hey Nike, no one is holding you to live out your adventures as a solo sailor!! I think, to be honest, none of us subscribers care whether you are sailing a passage alone or in company!! It's your adventures, experiences and exploration that we are interested in!! Look at it this way, if you are sailing alone then that is the norm, but if you have company then that is a bonus. I am the same as you, very much love my own company, but from time to time we need companionship, we need someone to talk to, we need someone to take the weight off of our shoulders, we need someone to laugh and cry with. We are human after all!! Loving your videos Nike, loving your adventures, I am a sailor myself and you are inspiring me to set out on an adventure on my own yacht. Thank you so much!!!! Wishing you safe passages going forward and fair winds!!! x

I have never given any thought at all as to how many people you are sailing with, it doesn't matter to me in the slightest. I think you have shown a lot of courage and exceptional fortitude in buying and repairing Karl and don't need to explain to anybody if you sail with others, I am just glad you are taking us with you. Also, being nervous is a good sign , it shows you are being cautious and prudent which is half of being a sailor, the other half is being patient. I hope you can get some ginger and see if it helps with your motion sickness, but it sounds like nerves, as a youngster, I am embarrassed to say I threw up the first week of school in the morning for 12 years. thanks again for sharing your adventure.

You don't have to prove anything. You are amazing. What you are doing and have done is amazing. My partner and I spent 4 years sailing on our 35 ft Cat starting with no experience. We made plenty of mistakes, sometimes it was tough but we always had each other. We use to get really tired with 2 of us on long passages especially if the sea was not comfortable and sleep was difficult. Never forget it's all about the joy. If that means sailing on passages with a friend, take a friend. You have already achieved more than 99% of people. Keep it up, until we get our next boat ( 1 to 2 years) we are on land and your videos help heaps. Love your work.😍 Richard and Susannah ex SV Ultimate Dream

I was in the US Navy for 10 years and for 5 of them i served on an Aircraft Carrier. Those Nimitiz class ships are so big that you don't really feel the movement unless the seas have very large swells, and even then, the rolls experienced on board are pretty gentle. It amazed me how many people who were new to living on the ships would have serious sea sickness. Most of what causes it is exactly what you describe with anxiety. It mostly in the head. People see a horizon line moving up and down and it messes with their equilibrium psychologically. I'm fortunate to have never had sea sickness, but I can experience car sickness if I am reading a book while the car is in motion. When I'm on my Nicholson 33--SV Triton, I don't experience motion sickness then, but when I have been out on the boat for several days at a time doing overnights at anchor while exploring the Puget Sound, I sometimes get a weird "swimming sensation" in my legs when I return to land! So I get the opposite! LAND SICKNESS! So keep your head up and continue on your journey, because unless you have a serious medical condition you should be able to get past the sea sickness and really enjoy yourself. Some people--even the most experienced of sailors, continue to get sea sick and it doesn't happen all the time. It can seem kind random. What you could do is take the pills for it, but you might consider looking into your diet onboard. If you are not eating the right nutrients for the passages at sea, your stomach can trigger sea sickness-like symptoms. Sailing is not just a lifestyle, but it is a complete change from the norms on land, so you can expect to take different steps to nourish your body so it can cope with lumpy seas or big rolling swells.

Thanks, Mike. It's all a learning process after all...and it takes some time to discover those needs and limitations for sure. I had to learn to accept my weaknesses and not feel intimidated by them or not let them put me down. I also learnt that some of my worries just make me more aware of some risks and make me prepare better for some of those "what ifs". Always trying to see the positive side of things :). Not always easy, but at least trying... Ahoy, Nike & Karl

Hi Nike. I sailed my little 22 foot boat Bekka solo from Australia to South Africa in 2006 with the intention of sailing on around the world but things changed after I reached South Africa. My personal situation changed and I paused to reflect. As much as it was a challenge I didn't really enjoy being alone. After much soul searching I sold the boat and didn't continue with my journey. I now have a new bigger boat (which I have sailed solo down the coast of Australia) but my next planned trip to Asia and beyond will hopefully include some crew to share the adventure. The thing I have learnt is that it doesn't matter, just do what your heart says at the time. There is no shame in changing your mind. I really enjoy your videos. I will definitely keep watching. Have fun and enjoy what you do.

Hi thanks for your great video's! Inspiring and such lovely places. I've now single handed my Mac Wester for 15 years and each time I set sail by myself the 'butterflies' always return for the first few hours. ..I think it's good because it confirms each time a healthy respect for the sea and makes you go through the safety routine to check everything is fine. ..racing drivers say they get the same thing each time until they get some laps under the belt. ..it just says ' we are human' wishing you fair winds and calm seas. Thanks again for all the enjoyment that you give!

You have to be comfortable with what you are doing and make it enjoyable for yourself otherwise you will question yourself every time, if that means putting off the longer trips until you have crew on board to make it more comfortable and safer for yourself so be it, it doesn't deflate the fantastic job you are doing following your dream and bringing your viewers along for the ride. Hi, I would also like to thank you for the discussion around solo sailing. I agree that it is a confidence issue, making the unknown to be known. I don't have a lot of sailing experience myself, and taking that first step and going solo is daunting. Safe, slow and steady is sort of my motto as well. I think it is good to have the nerves there, to help keep that over-confidence in check. you're doing great!

Glad to see you with the harness on. Every new adventure has it's moments, your new adventures are more frequent than the rest of us. I never had the impression that this was about single handing around the world. I had the impression that it was about a determined German girl that had a dream and is fulfilling it no matter the problems that she has run across. Nothing has stopped you yet. If you think you would be happier with a crew you would have no problem getting one. I bet any port you go to there will be ten people standing on the end of the dock jumping up and down shouting pick me, pick me. You have impressed me and I'm sure others feel the same way. I think the only person left to impress is yourself, that is always the toughest. Stay safe, Have Fun.

You have come a long way since your first video. I must say I was a bit worried about you at first. I think you are being smart by taking small trips at first and staying close to shore as much as possible. I am now impressed with your skill level. Keep having fun and listen to your gut. BTW I also get sea sick. I think everyone is capable and anxiety will certainly makes it worse. I love to sail and my dream is to do something similar to you. I admire your courage.

Well I think you're doing fine. And it is after all a learning experience - and the problem with sailing is surviving the learning curve. So don't let trolls get you down. I always lok forward to your vids.

Stress can cause many things--I have similar reactions (stomach, rolling, not eating)when I go for a day sail. at times!!! and you have so much knowledge and so many skills that most sailors don't. you don't have to apologize or justify what you are doing--I am so inspired by you and your videos. I have never stayed over on my boat (had boat w/cabin for over one year and keep putting that off). do what you are comfortable with, that's the bottom line.

you have amazing 'Go' Factor about you. you seem to know what your doing, and have the skills. being oversafe is still safe. and if your uncomfortable, then you are. You've pushed that limit and know you can do it. you know yourself best. You don't have anything to prove. I almost cried when you flew home.. i don't want to see you stop. Love the adventures. Beautiful videos, love the DIY talents.

Niki, pretty much everyone here is in solidarity with you. It is your Adventure, we're just following. No apologies necessary at all. I"ve sailed all my life but have never traversed an ocean, and if I did, I'd probably hire a "blue-water" captain to go with me and tutor me--so much to learn. Otherwise, great photographic views, images, good eye for capturing those small things, the crab, the wooden boat in the mangrove area, takes lots of forethought and work. Great editor back home too!

I have a great deal of respect for someone who can speak frankly and honestly about themselves. It would be very easy for you to only focus these vids on how wonderful it is to sail and how beautiful the islands are and avoid any realism of what it takes to step into this nomadic lifestyle. When you speak of your anxiety resulting in "sea sickness" it gives us(the viewers) a more rounded perspective. Not only does your honestly keep your vids from being shallow and redundant, it gives us permission to be human as well. All of us have some anxiety or self doubt about something in our lives but rarely do we have the courage to admit it. To see someone with such obvious intelligence, capabilities and bravery admit their anxiety/self doubt, it reminds us we are not the only ones. After all we are only human.

Thank you for the new video! I think you should do what makes you happy. If having another person sail with you makes you happy, then sail with another, or even a crew. There's nothing saying that you have to be a solo sailor. Change you post. Hang in there and just be happy and safe!! 😊💓👍

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on solo sailing. The mental part of sailing is much more difficult than the physical, and it is hard for arm chair sailors to understand. I remember the first time I anchored my boat overnight in the Apostle Islands. I couldn't sleep at all because I was so nervous about dragging or if I forgot to do something correct. This went on for weeks and each time I was with a full and competent crew. Eventually my confidence grew and I was able to sleep and gave me the courage to single hand. The same will happen for you as you gain experience and put miles under the keel, or keels, in Karl's case. If you are comfortable being alone, and I suspect you are, the confidence will come and the nerves will settle. It will just take time so don't give up the dream. Most of us following you are jealous that we aren't out there yet. Keep up the great work and do what makes you happy; with crew or not. Cheers!

Nike, sail the way it makes you feel comfortable. I would bet most of those that complain that your not solo sailing all the time, don't either. You know what? You're out there sailing whether solo or with crew, something I would love to be doing. Forget the haters and do what makes you feel right. I look forward to your vlog. Hey Nike, I really enjoyed your last instalment in which you were (publicly) honest about your anxiety with respect to sailing alone, I have shared that anxiety for my safety in both sailing boats and aircraft and I can tell you honestly also it comes around occasionally still ..... it serves a very important function, it causes you to pause and consider your planning with respect to your own well being, and so it is a GOOD thing. That having been said, you must not let it rule your days, if you have planned intelligently and included contingencies then you should confront that emotion (anxiety) and overcome it. Each time you do that you will build confidence in your ability and subsequently your anxiety will subside, it will occur less frequently and you will conquer it more easily each time. It will always be there because it serves a purpose. I have conquered my anxiety with many experiences and I have no doubt you will do the same, I know this because I have watched you doing it!

Dear Nike, Thank you for the great videos, I always look forward to them. This was another example, well done. About the SOLO sailor thing... If people don't like it they can jump in the lake, suck on an egg or whatever. You have more balls and courage than 99% of people out there! Most who whine and complain don't even have a boat, let alone know how to sail. You are the one out there doing what most can only dream of. I tip my hat to you. I get anxious crossing the Straight of Georgia (a local body of water 20 miles wide and 100 miles long) so I can only imagine what you go through. If you feel you'd like some crew for help or just some company, good. People always have opinions, so here is mine... Sail and live the way you like and don't let anyone, especially 'arm-chair admirals', tell you otherwise. Stay safe and have fun captain.

Just keep doing what you're doing and keep yourself happy and comfortable. Solo sailing or not, who cares? You're not in some sanctioned solo race or rally. Have fun. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your channel.

Your doing a great job sailing and with your videos. You don't need to justify having someone sail with you some of the time. The ones that point out that your not sailing solo all the time. Would never have the balls to do what your doing. All the best😀
