Phoenix A* would like a word. And yes it's mass is confirmed to be greater than Tons. It was observed ripping apart a star at such a distance from the galactic center that would be impossible even for Ton 618, that's when astronomers finally began to realize how massive it actually is.
@snickerbobble12 күн бұрын
I think Phoenix A* is bigger as currently observed. TON-618 is muuuch further away and iirc, if it maintains even half of Phoenix's growth rate, TON would be more massive.
@Lonewanderer3012 күн бұрын
@@snickerbobble That's just it, Phoenix A* is much closer and is still feeding at a ferocious rate, Ton618 likely stopped feeding long ago.
@snickerbobble12 күн бұрын
@@Lonewanderer30 We don't know that. We can't see it as it currently looks like. It could go a few hundred years with minimal growth and then begin growing a lot again. It is billions of light-years away. A lot can happen during those millions and billions of years.
@Lonewanderer3012 күн бұрын
@ All black holes run out of gas when they get big enough, their own accretion disks drive it away. Ton618 is likely long dormant, just like all the SMBH in closer galaxies.

TON-618 isn’t infact the biggest black hole. It phoenix A that is bigger. But at the same time, there is a much bigger black hole then phoenix A. But phoenix A is literally the center of our galaxy as well other black holes that control other galaxies Edit: I was wrong about phonix A being the center of the milky way. It still bigger then TON-618
@TheUniverseEnchanted16 күн бұрын
TON 618 is labeled as the largest because of its well-documented size and active quasar nature, making its mass easier to estimate with confidence. Phoenix A*, while potentially larger, has less precise data to confirm it definitively as the largest. Don't forgot that ton 618 is 2-3x far than Phoenix A* which mean Ton 618 could continues to grow, it become even larger than its current estimated mass of 66 billion solar masses. I knew there is always bigger than Ton 618 or Phoenix A* in the universe.
