Tom Petty was a little out of place at that time, nowhere near as accomplished as the rest of them. His best stuff came out after going to school touring with Dylan for 2 years and then playing with these guys. The joke always was that they needed somebody who could translate Dylan to English. That's not to say he wasn't an excellent addition and held his own admirably.

They are George Harrison of the Beatles, Tom Petty of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Jeff Lynne of ELO, and Roy Orbison ( had a string of hits starting in the 50-6o's "Pretty Woman" one of them. Bob Dylan is also in the group but did not sing on this song. They got together out of mutal respect and did a couple of albums shortly before Orbison died. There is a ton of rock and roll history in these five guys. Any one of them is worth exploring. Believe me, they all have music you would enjoy.......your kind of music.

Better pull up the official version where they are all singing together. This is THE greatest supergroup that ever came together. George Harrison (Beatle). Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynn (Electric Light Orchestra), Roy Orbison. Roy passed away before this was released. It’s my favorite TW song, but “Handle With Care” is right up there.

I love this song (and "Handle Me With Care"). This song is made even more poignant with the passing of Roy Orbison (in 1988), Tom Petty (in 2017) & George Harrison (in 2001), all of whom have reached 'the end of the line'. Roy Orbison had passed by the time they filmed the video. Thanks for playing this & your comments.

There's a lot of variety in their first album, as you had five very different, very talented musicians working together. When you said there was someone halfway through that you really liked, I'm willing to bet that was when the late Roy Orbison started singing. If you want to try one of their more unusual songs off this album, might want to give the very Dylan-esque (and sung by Dylan) "Tweeter and the Monkey Man" a listen.
@michaelnorman3393
@michaelnorman3393 3 жыл бұрын
Good call. "Tweeter" features a Jersey setting, and a reference to at least seven Springsteen songs. (I counted once a long time ago, but can't remember the exact number lol) At this point, Dylan and Bruce had crossed paths on stage, and off, many times, so it was believed to be a playful homage, to Bruce once being called "the next Dylan" :)

Yeah, the video version on the train with the empty rocking chair, symbolizing the death of the wonderful Roy Orbison is the one to put up. The thing about this group is that they are so chill in their style. It is what makes them so great to listen to again and again.

I've been waiting for someone to react to this song, but wish it had been the official video version. I'd be willing to bet that the voice you liked belonged to Roy Orbison. Run it back and see if that voice is accompanied by a black and white photo. Roy recorded but passed before the video was made. All other photos here were pulled from the video which was filmed with a sepia tone efffect. I'd recommend seeing the the video version just so you'll understand what the comments are going on about.

This is one of those rare times where the extended version was the weaker choice. I think this was an artificially elongated version of a 12 inch single. Those tend to be remixed solely for dancing at a disco. Oh well. I doubt your overall reaction would have been much different anyway. Thanks for doing your excellent channel. At least three a day. Bet that's a lot of work!

It seems like a few of us are guessing which voice you like. I'm guessing Jeff Lynne or Roy Orbison. Jeff Lynne is from ELO ( Electric Light Orchestra) and if you saw "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" the song baby Groot is dancing to is an ELO song "Mr. Blue Sky". Some Roy Orbison songs are : Crying, Only the Loney, I drove all night, Pretty Woman, ect.

Wooooooooooooooow how could I literally have known and loved this song all my life, and NOT have known that it was sung by the Traveling Wilbury's?, nor have even registered that they were freaking world famous singers in the mix of that group?, who would have thought that people already THAT famous would have gotten together to form a group? I mean cmonnnnn Roy Orbison, George Harrison from the Beatles, Jeff Lynne from Electric Light Orchestra, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan??!? Am I crazy?? His could I have NOT known they did this??? Meanwhile whoever cut this video did an awesome job of showcasing just who was singing each section, that was really helpful, can't believe I never recognised Roy's voice in that song, I mean I DIDN'T RECOGNISE ROY's VOICE!!!!! ROYYYYY, like how? He has one of the most distinctive voices in the world, and this video also goes to prove I love Tom Petty's voice even though I didn't know it, becasue his parts of the song have always been my favourites. So I'll definitely look into him more now individually. I am sooooo glad I watched this reaction today, it opened my eyes!!!

GEORGE HARRISON of the BEATLES, TOM PETTY from Tom Petty and the HEARTBREAKERS, JEFF LYNNE from ELO (Electric Light Orchestra), ROY ORBISON (the black and white picture), and BOB DYLAN. (Jim Keltner on drums. SADLY GEORGE HARRISON and TOM PETTY have also died, following ROY ORBISON. Only Jeff, Bob and Jim are left.

stlmopoet I think the fact that this is some weird, extended version that took a 3 minute ditty & turned it into a 6 and a half minute monster may have some to do with it as well. What was up with that intro? I thought he was listening to a version without the lead lyrics. That middle breakdown (after the regular song would’ve been done for well over a minute) was really odd too.

Cool Dry Place, The Devil's Been Busy, Wilbury Twist, Poor House are all more up tempo and just better imo. They have other good tunes as well for only cutting two albums worth and change, really always thought End of the Line was not the good stuff yet a commercial success. That is true of so many groups from that era, what record companies promoted and DJs spun wasn't the best music. Bands like Blue Oyster Cult, Black Sabbath, ZZ Top, Zep and plenty of others are prime examples either due to social moraes around lyrics and behavior or track lengths and monetization.
