At their core, Kiss is catchy, simple, hard rock with pop influences, all wrapped up in a fantasy/horror/superhero package. If you dig deeper they have an incredibly varied catalog. And for millions of kids my age in the late 70s, they were the reason we started picking up instruments. We couldn't figure out how to play Rush or Zeppelin, but we could play Kiss songs. Their influence is immeasurable.

The whole package was the thing that made us so mesmerized with Kiss back then. I listened mostly Destroyer, Creatures of the Night and Animalize albums. Now later some other older stuff too. Their books have been very interesting to read. We ofc had no idea of everything that was going on in the background, all the fighting, substance abuse, over the top decadent partying and wrecking hotelrooms. They had very challenging backgrounds which makes me really appreciate what they have accomplished. You have to admire their hard work and dedication. This video was when they had Eric in the drums and they played much faster. Ace was still playing and honestly there would not have been Kiss without the original four. Too bad that things soured afterwards between them but nothing stays the same forever.

Saw an interview with Paul Stanley where he said that when he went to concerts, he was tired of hearing bands that didn’t give the audience their money’s worth - even though they paid for a ticket. He wanted to be the band that always give the audience their money’s worth. Musically I am not a fan of KISS, but I can say that as a show band every single time I saw them in concert, they gave 100% and the audience got their money’s worth. They never “mailed it in” or gave the audience anything less than they paid for.

I only went to one Kiss show. We actually went to see Uriah Heep open for them. They killed. We stayed for Kiss for the fire show, etc. The reason I checked out Elizabeth's take on this song. Is because 'Detroit Rock City' is probably my favorite song of theirs. It was their opening song when I saw them. But the sound was screwed up until the song was almost over. Only then did we know what it was. It was kind of a hoot after that. We did leave before they finished to beat the traffic.

@JR-vc3lq "the last 6 years"? He's quite obviously lip-synching even here--the vocals are audibly double-tracked.
@scottodell43714 ай бұрын
@@JR-vc3lq Well, about that. I heard it too - but then I started wondering - because this was, for 1980, considered to be a "professional" video-taping of the concert - could they have double tracked the vocals in post-production to make his voice sound more "full"? I know that audio engineers do all kinds of things with sound in post, because generally bands do not like the way they sound in concert, and to make their egos better the audio engineer will effect all kinds of sounds for them. That would also explain why it looks like Paul is lip-syncing. I honestly don't know about Kiss using backing tracks in the last 6 years, but a post-production "enhancement" would make sense.

Paul Stanley said that "Detroit Rock City" was one the best songs he had ever written, released in 1976, it was overshadowed by the ballad "Beth" that became a huge single that year. Paul Stanley said the lyrics were a tribute to a Kiss fan in North Carolina, who was killed in a car accident on the way to a Kiss concert. Kiss wanted to immortalize Detroit in gratitude for embracing this band from New York City with 4 guys in makeup and costumes. Everybody thought Kiss were clowns, but they blew away audiences on tour and they were playing arenas in Detroit around 1975 and the Midwest, before they even had a hit record. Also, their big double-live album "Alive!" was recorded in Detroit's Cobo Hall in '75 and that became their first major album. By 1977, the original Kiss was a global success and had become a pop culture phenomenon.

Their style and theatrics grabbed our attention in the 70's. Releasing two "live" albums also helped build excitement to see them. My friends and I dressed up as KISS for a 6th grade end-of-school show. I was Ace, and we did Rocket Ride. I even strapped a smoke bomb to the back of my guitar for the guitar solo. Luckily, we were the last act of the day, so the principal wasn't too hard on us for it. Everyone wanted to be KISS!!

I’ve seen them 4 times in my life, once in each of the past 4 decades, and they always put on a great show. Despite the comments about not being great musicians but entertainers, I think they were both. Paul Stanley was a great vocalist and guitarist. Gene Simmons was good singer and great bassist. Ace Frehley was not a good singer but was a great guitarist. And Peter Criss was an awesome drummer that sang well when given the chance. I think for their performance, it was mostly about giving their audience a wonderful experience and memory.

In the mid 70’s there was nothing like Kiss, no stages that size, no light or smoke machines like they had, the were no AC/DC, no Judas Priest, no Van Halen, nor Iron Maiden, that’s what made them great, even these groups were their opening act in different tours. The music was not complicated, songs about simple things that made life good in those years. Their stage presence was great, they are more than 6 foot tall guys in high heels, cool costumes, they were the super heroes that played hard rock. And they had a huge merchandising, you could not get another band lunch box or an action figure or anything you can imagine. I think all that is what made them stand out in many things that didn’t exist back then.

Mike You have been a KISS fan for only forty years ??!! clearly either a "late comer", too young or in some limited location, residence, country 😙 KISS became a sensation as they were introduced to the public fifty years ago; more so as they were introduced within the 'commercial' RockNRoll scene. Then introduced to the public more via public, live, tour shows, as they became available, popular with their "theatrics" including costumes, costume changers, pyrotechnics, while remaining with their "unknown" actual appearance mystique. Apparently they were originally a "Studio Band" which became commercial success, then live performance, show, presentation, theatrical success too. Always, still remember, recall the first time, instance, one of my close buddies played their first released album with the cover photo, along with others within that same time period. It was a revival period which clearly opposed the poor "Disco" era, though it had some good melodic aspects and close dancing; but Booooring, repetitive, lacking creativity - current "Pop" is quite similar though better than the horrible, meaningless, mostly disgusting "Rap" [heard the earl versions first in 1980 - Yuuuck, horrible disgusting, etc.]

I never understood the questioning of their musicianship. All the iconic riffs and melodies. Gene's bass lines. Paul's solid rhythm work. Ace and Peter never over playing, only what the song required. (When able due to substance abuse). I do agree their lyrics were throw away, for the most part. Marketing, yes. Imagery, yes. But bottom line is I heard and liked their music long before I ever saw a picture of them.

@@TheMedicinalManCan't argue the nostalgia part. I was 10 in 1975 when I first heard Rock and Roll All Nite off the Alive album on the radio. Four months later I was gifted the Album for Christmas. That's when I first saw what they looked like. I like them as much as Black Sabbath, Led Zep, Aerosmith, any hard rock band. My ears liked what they heard. By "required" I too am referring to today's standards where there often is too much playing. I don't need to hear an Eruption caliber solo in every song, nor do I need to hear a drummer nearly the entire length of the composition with feet as fast as Fred Flintstone's while trying to get his car going. Also, weird seeing them take a lot of flack on here. No, they weren’t elite musicians, that’s obvious. They wrote 2-3 absolute iconic songs, they were super solid live (before Paul’s voice left him) and they always delivered a spectacular show. Oh yeah, they’ve sold over 100 million albums. That puts them in very rarified air. So, if you’re looking for absolute vocal/musical brilliance, no. If you’re looking for solid musicianship, consistency, and absolute stellar showmanship that is probably responsible for most of the stage shows you see today, these are the guys.

The seats were general admission and everyone was standing everywhere. (I understand this was the last purely general admission show in Tulsa). People had snuck in hair spray bottles and even when Gene wasn't breathing fire on stage, there were massive flames springing up from the crowd. The music was incredible for me in that Kiss Alive was one of the first rock albums I ever had. The show I saw was pretty much duplicated on the Kiss Alive 2 album. The staging, lighting, and pyrotechnics were incredible. Firepots blasted to the ceiling. Explosions rattled my teeth. We never sat down during the entire show. There were massive pedestals that raised the band 20' in the air for the finale. Thinking back, I can't imagine how they didn't burn the place down. No concert for me has ever quite lived up to the craziness of that one.

The ABSOLUTE **MUST** for Kiss vocals... you gotta do "I Still Love You" from MTV Unplugged. Paul Stanley was unparalleled vocal greatness. Unfortunately all of this "power" caught up with him about 15 years ago, and he has since truly struggled vocally. He had to have throat surgery at one point even, but continued to struggle. But for the first 35 years in the spot light, no one could touch what he was particularly doing, with vocal range, power, showmanship, and style. You should also totally check out his performance as the Phantom, "Music of the Night" for sure. He got RAVE reviews for that performance, with one music teacher saying she'd never seen a performance so perfect and sincere. it was very personal for Paul, as he was born with a facial deformity and consequently is deaf in one ear. On a final note, every one in Kiss sings, including replacement members. So you've got nine total vocalists for this band. All of them unique, and some quite great.

So interesting that THIS was the version of "Detroit Rock City" (originally released in 1976) that was picked. 1980 was a commercial low point in KISS's career. The album they were touring for, "Unmasked," sold so poorly that the tour had to be drastically scaled back (only 1 tour warm up date in New York, but otherwise they just performed in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand). Plus this tour is the only time I've ever heard Paul sing this song like this. It's a bit of an anomaly of a performance. I was 16 when this song came out. I had already been singing and playing bass guitar. By Jan 1 1977 I was 8th row at the Providence Civic Center, my first concert ever. I had been playing in symphonic bands in school for years and I could never move except to make the instrument sound. KISS changed all that. I am still a fire breathing bassist today. I am not the rabid fan I once was, but I do owe my musicianship to them. I would have chosen a much different video than this, but at least it was still before the makeup came off. KISS is more an experience. When you listen to ALIVE I and as Paul Stanley says, that is Rock and Roll. From 1973 and probably into 1980, these guys played about 300 nights a year. And when they werent gigging, they were recording. Say what you will about the music. I dont care who you are, they gave it all for the band in that time frame. You were saying how his vocal chords take the strain. The last time I saw the band, ORIGINAL band, 2001 Pauls voice was just as crisp as when I saw him in 1977. I understand that before they retired, they were using backing tracks, who cares. I wish you could have seen the original band perform. The KISS experience is something special. You were right about 'personna' They always strived their characters from the start. You never left a KISS show feeling let down.

There';s a great story in Geddy Lee's autobiography about when they were touring with KISS. Geddy was playiing some of the 2112 material for Paul Stanley, and Stanley said something like, "Well, Ged, I don't really get it, but keep going." Geddy's reaction was "OK, well, he wasn't feeling it, but then again this is a guy who's going out and singing 'Strutter' every night, so what are you gonna do?"

Great story. Very revealing that Paul didn't "get" the music, but encouraged him to keep playing, as he was actively listening.

ha, but Strutter is an absolutely killer song. Rush is great too. Kiss were super supportive of them.

@@MobiusBandwidth Back in the day, WFMT in Chicago often played modern classical (12 toned stuff that sounded like cats in heat, fighing... but less pleasant). When I got to college I discovered Bach, Mozart, Debussy, The Russians... and fell in love with classical. Comparing that to KISS makes no sense, but it's not like one couldn't enjoy both for what they are. My heart will always belong to Zepplin, but part of that had to do with a big brother with a Kenwood 9600 that could rattle the walls down the block.

@@MobiusBandwidth Indeed. For a while there was an animation on Alex's part of the Rush website that absolutely roasted Paul Stanley. (In an affectionate way, of course)

First time I saw them I did the Gene Simmons face makeup and my daughter did Paul Stanley and we went to get something to eat before the concert at a burger joint after driving into the city and sort of forgot I had the makeup on and the reaction from people in the street and the restaurant was wild. Such an overwhelming positive response from people. We then coincidentally sat next to a couple who my daughter recognised from a local reality show and got talking to them. They said they just flew in from Sydney on the same flight as KISS and Gene Simmons walked onto the plane in his pyjamas as a true rock star. Legendary evening I’ll never forget.

My wife a total 90’s alternative fan (Tragically Hip favorite band), I took her to a Kiss show at Hershey Park and she said it was the best concert she had ever been, just entertaining and fun. The music to me is great but the experience is one of a kind.

If you want to hear Paul's singing skills, you picked the wrong song. I still love you from the MTV unplugged sessions is what you should be watching.

The KISS live experience is what this is about. Until you are in the middle of the crowd feeling the heat of the explosions while they are exuding their musical energy and theatrics right in front of you, you just can't fully comprehend that which is KISS.

This is one of KISS's major anthems, balls out fun! If you want to hear Paul show case his voice look at I still love you as performed on the MTV unplugged special.
