He is doing what he wants. When he wants. It is called freedom. He has everything with him when and wherever he decides to go. Huh, sounds good to me.

Or you could just fly there. Or the train or bus. Stay with friends or a hostel if money is an issue.

Hmmm…one has to consider all operating cost per mile, insurances, depreciation, carry cost when one vehicle is parked, etc. Have made a number of trips around the country with lengths between 30 to 60 days. Using hotel rewards, credit card points, picking up meals at grocery stores, carrying a cooler in the car to have supplies for lunch or light dinners. Trips were to visit all the national parks, it can be a lot less than what most folks think. As you say…you do you, I’ll do me.

You still have gas driving around going and doing or seeing stuff when you get where you’re going.

I haven’t stayed at a hotel since I bought my camper. Don’t have to worry about bed bugs either.

I went from Atlanta to Las Vegas in the spring, 29 nights, Holiday Inn Express and similar, a step above the cheapest. Average price $100 for double queen rooms, most included breakfast. It was a mix of downtown and airport locations, but better than staying in a parking lot or gas station. Brand new Toyota Corolla $800 rental, averaged 40 mpg

I hate motels. I could write a book on the freeky things that go on at motels. I would rather sleep in a tent. I got bedbugs from one. Had hell getting out of my home ! And don't get me started on the nasty, stinky, gross, beds and bathrooms!!

Quite a few states have regular unleaded gas at or under $3 per gallon. Add another .60-$1 per gallon for diesel fuel. I towed a 21 foot trailer with a 2019 Chevy 3/4 gas and was lucky to see 9 mpg (pen to paper, not the lie-o-meter in the dash) 2023 Ram 3500 towing a 30 ft 10k 5th wheel I'm 8-10 mpg if the winds aren't around. That is with a 6.7 HO diesel power train.

It beats hotels. You never know what has been going on in one. Drugs can be a worry when you travel with small children or pets. You don't know what is in the carpet or on surfaces in a hotel room.

How about flying and save six to eight days driving? Airfare from Chicago to Vegas or Phoenix, $300-$400 (Four and a half hour flight) Time is money. Rental car for a week, $600, gas $50. Airbnb, $1,000 (cook in if you like). I like my plan better for $2,000, excluding meals.
