I go hiking and backpacking a lot where I stay out in the woods for multiple days with no power. I love having a small handheld with me while sitting around camp or in my tent at night. I bring a small charger I use while hiking to keep the handheld topped off. These things are great to get my nerd fix in while getting outdoors.

I bought a power bank that includes a fold out solar sheet with four panels precisely for such a use case. If I need a lot of power, I also have a much larger fold out solar sheet that simply has two USB outs for charging.

Your shots are nice but I think they have little to do with reality. I don't know anyone who stands on a beautiful ship with a beautiful view on a beautiful day with a bright sun on a railing on the ship and plays.. :)(can you put the RG35xx that bright?..) I’m traveling now and I’ve brought my Switch, Steam Deck, and Retroid Pocket 3+. When I’m actually in airports, the Retroid Pocket 3+ is great! I can stick it in my purse, the battery lasts for quite a while before I need to charge it, and at SFO I was actually streaming games! I bought a super low profile plug with a usb C outlet and I can pretty much pack my bigger handhelds until I actually get on the plane. We actually had a situation where we had to get on a later flight due to an injury (long story, injured party is totally fine and was cleared to fly) and that RP3+ pretty much made 6-7 hours fly by.

The deck is all in one, that's what's great about it, all you need on a trip is a deck. But, having a smaller system for retro stuff would be good as well to save battery, or play while charging deck.

Russ, itmay be the uncoolest thing ever, but a Fanny pack is a dads best friend when traveling. I wear it like a sling most times, but it’s nice to be able to wear it on your waist when you want to give your shoulder a break. Mine is large enough that I can fit a battery pack, cables, a small retro handheld and even a small water bottle. Give it a go for your next vacation or just when you’re on the town with family.
@cirmothe9

For octopath 2, you go through every storyline in one playthrough. As you travel to each town, the game asks if you want to see the characters backstory and you play through their first chapters as though you started the game with them. You do not need to do multiple playthroughs to see everything. The only thing is the first person you chose will be permanently attached to the active party but you will eventually add all the other characters to your team. And yeah the game is sort of structured like an open world game where you can tackle chapters in any order you want. But the game also tells you what level you should be in for each chapter so it kinda points you in a linear fashion to what you should tackle next.
@pixelpuppy
@pixelpuppy Жыл бұрын
this. it was the same with Octopath Traveler 1 as well. And once you completed your "main character's" story arc, they can be removed from the party. That aside, it's still 100hrs of play time, which is difficult for a family man like Russ.
@servantbyday

I was just in Hawaii back in Sept last year and spend 5 days in Oahu and 5 in Maui. I only have an RG351M for travel, no steam deck or anything else but it was great. It was super simple to just pull up Metroid or Dragon's Lair, play for 10 or 15 min and put it away. I think anymore, unless there are specific higher end games a user wants emulated (like on the PS2), just about any device will do.

Thank you for such great perspective. Outside of your unique artistic and communicative flairs (which are always a huge part of the joy in your channel), THIS is the kind of perspective that really sets you apart from others in this space. From counting on the kid factor to those pesky in-laws letting their phones go dead every time to a reminder of just how much down time inevitably exists on every trip, Retro Game Corps really shines best in this sort of fireside chat type of content. Your more pragmatic exploration of real-world applications is refreshing and directly relatable, and in my earlier comment about benchmarking this is the kind of feel I think you can bring to that space as well. I don’t know how-I’m not the smartest guy in the room-but you continue to produce great content as you continue to evolve. Thanks for bringing us along, keep up the great work! And I’m a two device guy, for sure-Steam Deck and hacked PS Vita.

@@spritsfal5088 hahaha-I have a Vita for the same reason Russ had a smaller handheld. The Vita is super small, super portable, powerful enough to run a large library of systems, and the battery life all these years later is still spectacular. Haven’t tried emulating Vita yet, only a handful of Vita-specific titles I really enjoy these days.

@@spritsfal5088 I don't think PS Vita emulation is that great on either x86 or ARM. So it's a legitimate reason to still stick to the original hardware, for native support of systems PSVita, PSP, and PS1. When hacked it can comfortably play all the systems from Atari 1D to 2D GBA. It's decent with the likes of 32X, Saturn, N64, NDS. But it can't really do Dreamcast, PS2, 3DS, GameCube, Wii. Those can be done on something more powerful like the RP3+ or faster. But if he has a Valve SteamDeck, that can handle those systems that a hacked PS Vita cannot. Btw, I prefer the PS Vita Slim, it's more pocket friendly, and the screen doesn't burn-in. But hopefully next year, with the new Vita3k emulator and RP5 device, we can replace the hacked PS Vita Slim from our arsenal. Or it could come in the form of a GPD Win-2 (pocketable x86) successor.

I was a member of Uncle Sam's Canoe Club from 1979 to 1985 and know that a 7 day cruise would be a sea sick extravaganza. I would usually take 3 weeks to get my sea-legs. I had a similar size hand bag for my Olympus ON2 camera and zoom lens and other necessitates when doing my Med/IO tours and can say it is just the right size to carry along on the tour bus. It looks my robust than mine which broke in about a year. The only computer game that I remember playing was on a shipmates Timex -1000 which was a basic typed in game from a magazine. I wish that could remember what it was called. Village raider something? I glad you enjoyed your cruise , have a nice week.

For me, Steam Deck for daily driver when I have easy access to an outlet for sure. Too great for modern games and perfect for emulating the stronger games like ps2 and up. My pocket retro is the RG353P I recently got. It's perfect for my ps1 and down itch and great for lines and waiting rooms. Got tired of emulators on my phone cause I prefer buttons over touchscreen.

Just saying, love the content as a new subscriber. YES, be a local hero and show figuring out the savestate transfers. YES, love the honest reality relating to a real vacation with/visiting fam/friends and downtime. And yes, I agree now with myself much more, and you, independent systems for different situations is a worthwhile consideration, as I adore the Deck as the all-in-one but it is by no means "pocketable". And honestly maybe not the best choice for just a few quick minutes gaming. Thank you for sharing how you share your time with gaming and family. Your example is a very positive one in the gaming community as a whole friend.

Hey Russ, thanks for the amazing videos! I am very similar to you in that i recently traveled with a steam deck and my smaller RG350. I found I used the 350 more due to its smaller size and convenience, however the small screen is a pain, also the fact the dead is low on my unit isn't too great in the hand. Im considering upgrading the RG350 to the RG35XX or the Milo mini plus. Have to say I prefer the mini plus's screen looking full width, and the purple colour is really nice, but I just updated the OS to the Adam image on the RG350, and love the way it looks. Is it possible to use the box art I scrapped in my current ROM folders with Garlic OS? Thanks for taking the time to read my comment man!!

for me it’s always been the vita, weather it was when i first got it as a kid playing minecraft on the long car journeys, when i got a bit older playing it on a night in the hotel for a bit whilst i wait for my family to get done with the bathroom so i can get a shower etc, or more recently now that i’m an adult just playing it in bed whilst i recover somewhat from a hangover 💀💀 it’s very good for me because it’s my main handheld, the battery life is great, it’s small and it uses the same charger as my power bank so i don’t have to bring an extra charger. In fact it’s gotten to the point now where the vita is basically my only handheld since i love the game selection and it runs pretty much all the systems i want to besides the saturn. Even though we have quite a few handhelds, we never play while traveling, except for in the hotel room. Concentrating on playing while riding busses or cars actually gives me motion sickness and it still hard to concentrate on gaming in a train with lots of people chatting away. A smaller handheld is more likely to be taken along because it doesn't feel like a waste of space even if it doesn't see much or any action. But I wonder if the GPD Win 4 will actually be taken along, while my SD doesn't really leave the house. Btw, constantly jumping games is bad for actually finishing RPGs. Have countless ones that I started multiple times and never finished, some of them I've been wanting to finish for 30+ years... Planescape Torment took me two or three tries, starting from the beginning each time, to actually finish and I was proud of myself once I did. xD

I'm not sure if I'm alone but I feel like the Steam Deck is just too big to be practical outside of my house, The Miyoo or other smaller handheld makes a lot more sense because it can easily be slipped in and out of my pocket in literally a second but with the Deck I gotta bring an entire case and it requires a backpack or something else to carry it in, I dont know what scenario that would allow me to use the Deck anywhere without it being an inconvenience. This is the reason that my Miyoo mini is always in my pocket wherever I go because its portability is what makes it so great and I feel like I can be just as entertained by my massive 6000+ library of retro games on the Miyoo just as I can with my steam library on the deck. Steam Deck makes more sense around the house or when I wanna just play my steam games on my front porch on a nice day or on the couch when I dont wanna be slouched in my office chair.

I don't have kids, so my vacation is usually doing a lot of stuff. I bring my trimui s. Bigger handhelds doesn't make sense, when I use it only for a few hours across whole vacation.

That RG35XX is perfect to accompany the Steam Deck. I feel like the deck is a bit too beefy to just be carrying around with you everywhere. Seems perfect for the hotel room though.

It’s such a good game. My parents bought it for my little sister back in the day but I ended up playing it way more than her 😎

Haha same with super Mario world! I don’t think I’ve ever beat the game but it’s always a SNES game I load and play. Finally put a bit of time into playing it and got to bowsers castle, and then stopped playing and got caught up with something else. Maybe it’ll get finished when I get the Flip in the mail.

I drive a tanker truck for a living and I get about a half an hour of down time per stop, and so for that used case I find that devices like my 2DS XL, Vita, retro pocket 3 + or powkiddy v90 work best. Steam deck only comes out if I'm having a real bad day.😅

This is great info. I’m going on a Caribbean cruise this summer. I’m definitely going to bring a handheld but actually considered leaving the steam deck home and opt for a smaller one. Figured I wouldn’t be gaming much with all the entertainment and family around.

I already think it’s a hassle to take out my OLED switch on the go, how much more for the chunkier and heavier Steam Deck? It stays at home. I’d rather bring a smaller retro handheld that doesn’t take too much space in my luggage. When you go travelling, every gram and every milimeter counts. I’ve been travelling a lot so I already know more of this stuff
