I have been to Slab City twice. It seems friendly for the most part, but the have their crazies. One burned down an RV with someone sleeping in it. There is crime, cops do not patrol. I would feel unsafe living there.

@@MEugeneDavis you're right slab city is friendly for the most part and yes, there are some crazies. yea there's crime in the slabs, just like every other town. and just a heads up, don't be fooled by the rumors...the law does patrol. before moving to there full time I traveled solo to Slab City more times than I can count and did not once feel unsafe. same holds true for when I lived there. maybe you'll give the place another chance

I was there on Thanksgiving Day, 2018. I was going to the PALM SPRINGS AERIAL TRAM, but the park was close due to a fire caused by a homeless person the night before. 30deg(F) at night. So i headed to ALL these places like on this video. SLAB CITY is OFF GRID. NO WATER, NO ELECTRICITY. Looks like anyone is free to live there. You create your own property line using rocks, bottles, or tires, mostly. Lots of families lives at the place, grand kids to grandmas. Robert is right. PEOPLE THERE ARE NICE. Very poor leaving.

Salvation Mountain seems hardly worth the trouble. Robert was there the same year that I was last time I visited, 2018. I don't know if the mountain is still in such a fragile state as it was that year, but seriously there were, without exaggeration, about 45 "Danger" and "Please stay on yellow road" and "Keep OFF!" and "No climbing!" signs. It seemed like it was about to collapse at any moment, and the old guy working the place, briefly seen here, I think, was spending a lot of time barking at people the day I was there. The artwork has an aura of total stress, LOL
@mollyhershey2 жыл бұрын
the mountains fragile state is due to the fact that it sits on a fault line and is subject to massive water damage from flooding. maintaining the mountain takes an incredible amount of year-round work, even over the summer when temperatures linger at over 100 degrees daily for months on end. many visitors are respectful of Leonard's work but unfortunately there are those who are not, thus the "old man" barking. love is universal and very much worth the trouble.

all my trips to California have concentrated on the coastal areas with a bit of driving through the San Joaquin Valley. I would like to go see the desert one of these times. so many post apocalyptic sci-fi movies have been filmed in the areas you drove through. I'm like you though... it is sad to see all the decay not to mention the junk accumulated by many of the people who live out there. it was great to see you finally reach civilization at the end and I see you have the next video in the series posted now. the coast is the California of our collective imagination and I am not ashamed to say that is the part I truly love!

Robert, your videos I enjoy so so much !! I would like a few questions... You stop at many rest stops for overnight - does your propane run your heat, hot water, and air conditioning? How many rest stops offer potable water and waste tank dumps? When you drive all day does it charge your batteries? DO you have an inverter?
@TravelingRobert6 жыл бұрын
Propane runs heat, hot water and refrigerator, for AC I need to run the generator. As for rest stops it depend on the state, and even the area. Most don't. The engine does trickle charge the battery, and I have a 2000w inverter for the computer and to charge the phone and camera batteries

The reasons why Bombay Beach still has residents, are because for one; some of the people who used to live there is the 1970's did not give up and move, after the floods. Two, California offered some LA inner city residents peace and safety if they came out to the desert. And three, back in the mid 2000's, land was being sold for cheap. You could get land (a land lot) for less than $3,000.

Awesome video...who control the drone between 4:20-4:55? Because you are already driving KIA :-) This was good to see. I never heard or seen of these places before and it was 'interesting' to see but apparently I don't have what it takes to appreciate "art" either :-) I sort of liked the Slab City monument but the rest was too bleak and run down in my opinion. I will just enjoy it thru your video only and let other people experience the many smells you found there for themselves. Seems like many of these places I would not want to visit...how come YOU went here? You do pretty good research and planning before going places, so what did you think was good to make plans for these places? Makes me feel like a "desert version" of the Ghettos I grew up in Miami, Opa-Locka, and Liberty City when I was a kid during last few years of the 70s and early 80s. You know when the 'Cocaine Cowboys' and Griselda Blanco was running their game around my neighborhood. Anyways thank you for taking time and effort to make & share this video. I would of rather of stayed in the Keys again compared to the time and money you spent on this looong trip to visit these run down places. But again I say apparently I don't have what it takes to appreciate dilapidated stuff :-) sucks to be me. I guess there NO hope and I will just have to endure with my lack of skills and learn how to 'suffer' while I am Beachin, Breezin, and Chillin near the Ocean and somewhere cleaner :-)
