1962, I think, forest fire at Fontana Lake. Our college dorm was the nearest pool of men. They cane for us at 1 o'clock in the morning, loaded us on a bus, and off we went to man the fire lines. We got paid, a wild sum of 36.00 dollars, which was a magnificent sum at the time. We felt rich, dirty and tired. A fond memory from my time at WCC, correct name at the time.

GSMNP is the only national park without an entrance fee. That's because the state of Tennessee demanded that no fee be charged as a condition to transfer the land to the federal government for the creation of the park.

Hi Robert, Just a little more info about the “Tail of the Dragon” for your viewers. 318 curves in 11 miles. Sport car owners and motorcyclists the world over come to the “Dragon” to test their skills. There is also a “Tree of Shame” for those who fail and wreck their ride. If they have lived and most do, (alot don’t), they are supposed to hang some part of their “ride” on the “Tree”. NOTE: State Patrol heavily enforce speed during peak tourist season but for those who dare....The adrenaline rush is incredible.
@DizTraveler6 жыл бұрын
Indeed Paul, my friend who owns a motorcycle has rode on this "TOTD" many times. Of course he is not that brave enough to push the limits on speed. He lives nearby, so that's where I got the info, and hearing Robert was going to visit the area, -- was super cool! I have yet to get to the point where he rides on the "Dragon", be interesting to hear his comments. That area has several "curved" roads....I remember my dad driving our rental Class A near Cherokee NC with many curves and switchbacks...
@Wanna.Wander6 жыл бұрын
Paul Howell I was there, yes, I’ve done the curves and all these beautiful roads... nice colors Robert

Bryson City NC is my fav town. Tourists, but not overrun with them like Gatlinburg. Great little restaurants. I rented a beautiful log house last year with a wrap around porch with long range views as the base for driving around the Smokey Mtn Park. It was heavenly as all the leaves had turned colors. That was before I got my Minnie trailer. Love that area!

Goooooooooood Morning Robert. Loved your GSMNP Video. Your traffic experience is one reason one of the largest National Parks does not charge a fee to get in. Robert great video you were at some of the places I went back in Dec 2015, Townsend, and US 321, and of course driving south on US 441 through the Smokies...on 1 section of the video I thought you captured my similar photo I took, but it wasn't....Been cool if it was. I think that this video segment was by far 1 of your best...too bad that Tail of Dragon SD card was lost...would have been cool! Glad you were able to make it back safely, and honestly Gatlinburg is really a big Tourist town, very similar to Helen GA, lots of "German look a like buildings...and many many people" -- perhaps another time....

This yr. the north end of Blue Ridge Parkway's Fall was 2 days of full color. Day one was rain the next day the colors were not as vibrant. Then the leaves turned different shades of brown then fell off in just a few more days. The west side of the mountains is normally cooler and the leaves turn quicker. To bad you did not see the real height of fall. I would never go up in the mountains on a weekend. Tues. Wed. is much better. If your real lucky you may be the only one on the road for miles.
