One of India's yet another unique routes. One of India's longest running Narrow Gauge routes. Gwalior to Sheopur Kalan in Madhya Pradesh. The route is served by one train a day to Sheopur and two more that go upto Sabalgarh each day.

Route : Gwalior Light Railway, Madhya Pradesh, India
Due to the scarcity of trains and the expensive bus fares, the trains are filled beyond capacity and people climb up the roofs. Although, it has been explicitly written on the coaches that roof top travel is not allowed, it happens and officials leave it because it would invite the wrath of the local people. Also, there is not much of an option of the people and this is their best mode of transport.
Gwalior Light Railway (GLR) or Maharaja Railway is a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow-gauge railway in Gwalior. It was setup for Gwalior State during the times of British India.
The Gwalior Light Railway was built by the then Maharaja Madho Rao Scindia of the Gwalior State. Construction began in 1895 for the Gwalior-Bhind section and in 1899 for the Gwalior-Shivpuri section. The Gwalior-Sheopur Kalan section was begun in 1904. The line was extended to Birpur in 1908 and further to Sheopur in 1909. After independence the GLR was merged with adjacent railway companies to form Northern Railways. The rail started with steam locomotives, but later diesel locomotives are used.
It covers 26 stations and runs at an average speed of 18 km/h. It leaves Gwalior at 6:30 am and reaches Sheopur at 5:25 pm, so it covers 200 km in nearly 11 hours. In the opposite direction, it leaves Sheopur at 6:10 am and reaches Gwalior at 5:10 pm.
The Gwalior-Bhind section and the Gwalior-Shivpuri section were converted to 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) broad gauge in the early 2010s. The Gwalior-Sheopur Kalan section is under conversion to 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) broad gauge.

No country can compete with Indian trains in term of carrying passengers up on the roof. Truly an advanced technology of train. Mind blowing !

It's now October 2023. Do people still ride on top of this train?

Nope, this route has been closed as of March 2020. Did not reopen after the lockdown. The government is now building a Broad Gauge railway route as a replacement. Hopefully won't require rooftop travel when it opens.

Why not add more cars to the train to meet the demand of the people. It’s terrible that they are made to ride like that.

The railway has been closed for gauge conversion. Broad Gauge trains will start running in a couple of years.

Are they gonna travel on bullet trains the same way? Goverment should first fix regular trains before focusing on high speed trains.

You guys only saw one side ... This train is own by private authority. (Not owned by Indian railways govt of India) that's why there are mis-management and people sitting on roof. Now sitting on roof of train that owned by Indian railways is punishable offense.

This is indeed owned by Indian Railways. The Shakuntala NG in Maharashtra was privately owned and operated by IR on a lease prior to its closure.
