I met Lady Z in Victoria a week or so ago, we had a nice chat, my wife and I were heading to your old marina from Spinnakers to have a look at Geordie. She advised you had just left the day before, sorry I missed you. I offered to buy her a beer but she wouldn't tell me where your new home would be. Nice lady.

Just noticed that the Anchor Windlass bearings are finished. That Windlass will have to be rebuilt (bearings replaced and resealed). Also noticed that when you leaned on the shaft, there is extreme excessive clearance in the through shaft (significant bearing failure). The replacement bearings will be available locally and will be common. The seals to keep out the marine environment will be toast as well.

Peter! I bought a 5L oil pump at trotec (spelling Guess) in the mid 90 s for changing oil in my boat and I use it for my truck too. Has been working for 27ish years now. Engine must be warm. Might be on the internet if Trotac in Vic. no longer offers them. $100.00 back then.CHEERS from Sooke City P.S. boating friends might share the cost in exchange for rights to use. That is how I first got onto those pumps.

Looking forward to seeing where MV Geordie lands up Peter. Some rust converter and white tremclad paint for the windless housing? I spray the windless motor with fluid film to stop the rust from progressing. So much moisture in the chain locker. I use a 12V electric portable pump to change the oil. It is vital to get the oil to high temp for it to be sucked out efficiently.

Probably a hidden blessing the chain broke when it did instead of when you were trying to pickup the anchor. You may have helped others Home in on a un- thought of bit of preventive maintenance to preform on a windless. Pulling all the chain and anchor off the bottom, not a fun day cruising. I love starting a day cruising early in the morning like you did. Water is usually calm. Less traffic. Very peaceful.

As a retired mechanic that did many, many first oil changes on new equipment, I'm here to tell you that they put oil filters on crazy tight at the factory. It sounds strange but I guess they want to make sure there are no leaks or chances of the filter falling off. I really doubt that they bother to lubricate the sealing ring either. I have had 4 foot pipes on filter wrenches trying to get filters off. FYI, my favorite tool to get them off is a Caterpillar brand strap wrench. Part number 185- 3630. Not cheap, in fact insanely expensive, but you can get some torque on them. I think I went through 3 in 45 years on the tools.

You could have made a oil filter wrench with the old chain.... Alternatively... A length of strong material or a belt strap.. Wind the strap round so that if you pulled the end.. like starting a generator.. it would undo it... Insert length of wood/metal about the same size as a 12 inch desk ruler but thicker... under length coming off filter .. and tension over end and fold down other side... once you have it set up ... adjust so you can put hand round stick and hold both sides of the folded over strap... and lever? undo... Hope that made sense... That winch motor needs a service... One place you stopped at ... according to the chart .. I'm watching on mobile with older eyes .. so I think I read correctly... Wellsbourne Grove ...? There's a road in Stratford upon Avon of the same name... any connection? Best to have two bits of "string" connecting dinghy to boat tided to different places on both ends... and.. add a bunge in the line .. don't cut string make into loop and tie bunge across.. Regards Mark.

It's always funny to me to hear people comment on the weather. I watched mclintock the other night and forgot it had so many quotables. In the intro, john wayne says something like "if you tell me it's a good morning, I'll shoot you" guess I better watch it again. I actually do like misty and overcast weather, because we rarely get it, but I can picture a lot of people not enjoying that. I guess it's all in what you compare it to.
