Yes, my hometown has dwindled through the years, but a lot of history there. You didn't mention the cowboy polo field in the park, as the local polo team had been world champions for decades before completely folding around 1980. Used to be 3 or 4 cotton gins operating and at one time at least 10 gas stations. I was lucky to have grown up there while it was still fairly booming.

New pool opening up in Spur for Memorial Day 2024. We also have 5 at least Travel Trailor Parks. Thanks to a boom in business moving in around Spur. Huge solar farm that needed spaces for several hundred employees. And a Bitcoin company coming into Dickens county and their construction crews. The Galaxy Bitcoin Company is building our new pool. The Football Stadium and the Swimming Pool were initially build by the PWA in 1935 which changed its name in 1939 to the WPA. The stadium was also used as a rodeo arena in the 1950’s.

Must of been some money in the area at one time. The buildings, the football field, the parks, all seem to of pointed to a financial backing. With the wide main street and the big downtown buildings, I would of loved to see what "trade night" was like back in the day. Depending on what night of the week we could get away from the farm, or what things we needed to shop for, the folks would shop different towns in the area on a town's trade night. And especially during the summer months, the town would be full of people bustling around shopping, or standing in groups talking. It was as much a social as a business gathering. Some towns had a band playing in the park or at the end of main street. Sonetimes there were street venders, with the ones with cool drinks being very popular. I do not image many of those small towns have seen that much hustle and bustle since those days have ended. They sure were a fun time to be a kid!

I'm guessing that to remember a teeter totter, you must be near my age, though probably a little younger. Remember the bars, and the jungle gym and all the stuff kids now aren't allowed to play with? When you fall and crack your head open, you learn to not do that again. We didn't have bike helmets, knee pads, we drank out of the hose and played in the woods. Just googled it and found this … The typical park and recreation agency offers one park for every 2,287 residents served, with 10.8 acres of parkland per 1,000 residents. Spur has one park per 90 residents, or if you take out the RV parks it would be one per 120. At its peak it would’ve been 1 per 300. Interesting!

Typical of many small towns in Oklahoma/Kansas. Slowly fading over time. The town I went to high school in had a population of 4000 in 1930(oil boom), and now has less than 1000. This town has been losing buildings since the 1940s. It is sad, but economics is the reason. I am far better financially now because I left. One thing Spur might check on is looking for someone to finance re-doing their pool. The town I went high school in, found a foundation that paid for redoing their pool. The town could not afford to do it.

My mother was born there. My grandfather was a crop duster. There was a gas explosion from the plane while fueling, my mother was playing in the dirt a good distance away and was severely burned. I’m not sure how long they lived there but moved to East Texas. My mom was killed in a car accident when I was 21. I’ve always wanted to visit. I love quiet, low populated towns.
