John I’ve subscribed for a long time & enjoyed this video as much as any that you’ve posted. I drove through Wickliffe twice this week on my way home & back from KS to KY & it’s a nice little town. The town is clean & well maintained. Did you know that at one time Columbus KY just down the road from Wickliffe was seriously considered to be the site of the capitol of the United States?

Been through there a couple times, one time I got gas at the station (shown at 3:36) and I remember the town smelled like garbage. Maybe it was the river (shrugs shoulders). But I would love to do a piece on the mounds and Fort Jefferson sometime in the future. It's too bad the mounds are only open during the summer

Wise guy , I assume the 46 ft means the Mississippi River is that much over flood stage?
@ronfullerton316210 ай бұрын
You mean that the Wise Guy isn't really that tall???? I am shocked! Such a beautiful and stately court house. And even fenced around the border. Evidently the town fathers were smart enough to build on higher ground. Didn't look like any flooding marks around main street. I grew up in Louisa County, Iowa. And so many of the river towns along the Mighty Mississippi had streets and some buildings blocked off when the old river decided to jump her banks. And yet the people who had structures in harms way would go right back in and rebuild. That is until the Feds said they would no longer insure any property previously receiving a pay off. That old river gets ugly when she goes into a flood! Very good video of what seems a wonderful community. Interesting viewing as always.

@@ronfullerton3162 I'm in Sedgwick County Kansas. The little Arkansas River is about 1 to 1.5 miles wide when it's at highest point. The ruler by the bridge shows maybe 20 ft. At that point it covers about 1/2 of this farm. This is a good river bottom farm. Have a good day Ron!
@TravelwithaWiseguy10 ай бұрын
I’m not sure where it gets measured from actually. I’m guessing the bottom of the river 🤷🏼♂️
@ronfullerton316210 ай бұрын
@@williammatzek4660 Those old Rivera do get crazy when they flood. I grew up in Louisa County, Iowa, and we had plenty of rivers. The Iowa River and the Cedar River come together at Columbus Junction, then work their way together to the Mississippi northeast of Oakville. And they all like to flood from time to time. The last big flood had all of Oakville and acres of bottom ground flooded, as well as the lower part of Columbus Junction that is not built on the bluff. I moved to Nebraska 35 years ago, and never saw real flooding here until the bomb cyclone that hit late winter of four or five years ago. That did a real number on many communities and infrastructure. But these Midwesterners bounced back as usual. And there is hardly any signs left. Hope you have a good spring, and no floods on the farm ground.

I IMAGINE THAT WAS THRIVING MORE IN THE DAYS OF EARLY RIVER TRAFFIC! THE EARLY LONG DISTANCE TRANSPORT BEING THE RIVERS! AS RAILROADS AND ROAD TRANSPORT WERE IMPROVED, LOCAL TOWN TO TOWN RIVER TRANSPORTATION WAS REDUCED . BEFORE THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY ERA , FEDERAL HIGHWAY 60 WAS AN MAJOR ROUTE, BUT MADE LESS IMPORTANT DUE TO I-24 AND I-57! LOL , THE NARROW, HIGH ,AND LONG AREA BRIDGES ARE UNFORGETTABLE TO THOSE OF US DRIVING FULL WIDTH TRUCKS THROUGH THEM !!
