The main reason for the population drop is because of the military base closing in Selma. Or rather the outskirts of the city. Same thing with the Anniston/Gadsden area. Selma also was hit by a tornado last year. From what I read a lot of home owners didn't have insurance. The government is supposed to be helping with the situation. This is what one of the newspapers reported. There were several southern cities that were really devastated when the military bases closed.

Am enjoying these behind the scenes videos . Thanks. WRT to the annoying horn beeping when you close the door with the car running. I haven't found a way to disable that feature on my Ford, but I have learned that if you close the door without letting the latch engage, then the horn will not sound. Just slightly close the door without letting it latch.

Four years ago I made a memorable trip, mainly two lane roads from Kansas City to Fort Myers. One cool little town was Pine Apple, Alabama. Actually I don't recall the town being that cool but the name sure is. BTW I was driving a 1956 Continental Mark II so it got a lot of looks in the little towns, many of whom had never seen that particular model car. Well crap, I kept watching this and you discovered my town. Well, you mentioned it, but I didn't see where you had any photos of the town.

When I was a kid we used to travel on the two lane highways all the time. We didn’t have a choice, the Interstate highways were still mostly in the planning stages. We were very excited over time, as the Interstates were built and drastically decreased travel time. Now the Interstates carry so much traffic they aren’t very much fun to drive. I’ve also learned the journey is as important as the destination. Now I prefer driving the two lanes (which now have way less traffic). Thanks for the behind the scenes look.

Very interesting video, I just looked to check on the price of petrol (gas) in the UK at today's price and it would cost you over 8 US$ per gallon here, so you are really lucky! Just as a point of interest, John do you ever get lonely on these long drives? I know you have plenty to keep your mind occupied and busy, but a little interaction is good too. A smashing journey in pleasant country, you must see all sorts of wildlife on your travels, do you have much interest in it? Thanks once again, Frank.
@TravelwithaWiseguy10 ай бұрын
Thanks! Wow that's crazy the price of petrol in the UK - although I think there are many countries like that. You are correct we are very fortunate here. I never get lonely! The traveling all day is very interesting to me so time usually flies by and at the end of a day I'm tired and ready to just relax. I often interact with people on the road or back home throughout my trips. And the comment section here keeps me busy (in a good way). I do see a lot of wildlife, but I'm not any kind of expert on it. Not a hunter or anything, but if I see something interesting I try to put it in the outtakes :)

A wise man once noted "“One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas I'll never know. but of course in Alabama the Tuscaloosa". Sometimes gas stations are just that, that's the reality, I'm not crazy about reality, but it's still the only place to get a decent meal.. Good to see behind the curtains, I could almost pine for that apple but I saw that one a while back

Good video, definitely an beautiful and unique part of the country. Got me thinking though, you should add gas station reviews since you review the hotels now. I weirdly find convenience stores and truck stops interesting. You could consider bathrooms, pump speed and availability, hot food, coffee,etc… Although, there is a chance I might be the only one to like it lol. Big part of road trips though really.

I have a little tip for you. We got sick and tired of crappie showers when we traveled, so I came up with a cheep fix. You need to look for one of the cheep plastic shower heads like you see at Walmart or Doller General. Then take a 5/16ths drill bit and drill a hole through from the supply side and open up the restriction. We keep ours in a freezer bag keep and it in our luggage. A small crescent wrench is all you need to remove the old one and install yours. In some hotels it almost hurts when we take a shower, it's like a pressure washer. We sure enjoy each and every video you post.

Florence is literally the Austin, TX of Alabama. Always has been. What's funny is it's the only incorporated municipality in Lauderdale county. So Florence is a big city but there's no other cities in the county. However it is right by the Muscle Shoals, Tuscumbia, Sheffield area (they're all the same city basically) in Colbert county. So very populated area north to south, but gets rural quick if you go west.

Selma started losing population first from the Civil Rights initiatives in the 1960's and then when the Federal Govt. shut down nearby Craig Air Force Base in the late 1970's, which was the primary employer for the people in Selma. It has also been hit by at least one tornado in 2023 in which many homes were destroyed or left uninhabitable. Many were not insured and the people left to stay with family in other places as FEMA has been slow to assist.

Mr. Wiseguy. The motel showers cannot have any mildew or mold anywhere. Especially, black mold. Black mold is a very toxic fungus. If you see any signs, leave immediately. The same goes for the bed and bedding-it should never smell or have any small stains. And, never use their towels. Your health is much more important than a cheap motel.
