If ever you go to visit and you have the time, you should also consider visiting Guangzhou. It has the oldest mosque in China and in all of East Asia build in 627 CE, called the Huaisheng Mosque. It's modest in size, but has a lot of history. The other mosque in Guangzhou, the Xianxian Mosque, was established only two years later, so it's also incredibly old.

Western countries like to portray China as a horrible country where only CCP is allowed. I was born and raised in China and my province (close to Xi'an's province Shanxi) has almost a million Hui/Muslim people, and growing up I have so many friends who are Muslims and we got along just well! There are many mosques and amazing Muslim restaurants (Chinese muslim mutton soup is one of the best things in this whole world). Every religion (cult excluded) has extreme people who ruin the reputation of the religion, but China has the most ethnic groups and allow all kinds of peaceful and cultural religions. Those people always have something to complain about.
