Travis Orbin

7 жыл бұрын

As is the case whenever I do these, I had a few days to myself between finishing a full-length and prepping for an upcoming Darkest Hour tour and I decided to tackle these tunes. "ANM" was an easy one and since it had been so long since I did "Inertia" I figured why not! Sheesh, some of those parts in "Ow" surely induced the 'ow' in me. As I was getting these back up to performance tempii I got the same feeling I did when rehearsing "The Walk", in that I would certainly do things differently this time around (25-year-old Travis was a damn glutton for drum punishment, haha); but that wouldn't be true to the spirit of my playing style/approach from back then. I had an old demo of "Ow" in my e-mail with most of my programmed parts, and this version of "ANM" is from the old Bulb Soundclick. Fun fact, but "ANM" was named after a branding on the bottom of the rubber spider that's made a home out of my bass drum all these years.
As for gear I utilized my 12" rack and a cymbal setup that I've been especially preferring lately (left to right, player's perspective):
20" K Heavy Ride, 19" K Dark Crash Thin, custom hats (14" K Constantinople bottom (top) / 14" K Custom High Definition bottom (bottom)), 'stack' (14" A Custom EFX / 16" FX Oriental China "Trash"), 13" A New Beat Hi-Hats, 19" K Custom Hybrid Crash, 18" K Custom Special Dry China. I dig this so much I used it exclusively on every tune on the aforementioned full-length as well as 4/5 tunes on the upcoming Instar EP. For further gear inquiries please visit:
www.travisorbin.com/equipment.htm.
Notes:
0:30 - 1:09, 2:47 - 2:57 - right-side pedal hat fills in 16th rests (2:47 and on is especially a limb twister)
1:55 - 2:23 - china complements slide on guitar
3:03 - double kick flam
3:06 - in the middle of all that franticness is a 16th triplet fill-in that falls on the fourth 16th of the count, hehe
3:24 - one-handed press roll
4:56 - 16th septuplet fill-in
7:32 - 7:40 - on the repeat of the verse riff, an 8th snare is added for punctuation before every accent (regardless of previous kick pattern)
8:17 - 16th quintuplet fill-in
9:13 - on the repeat of the verse riff this time, fill-ins are added to break it up (including an 8th septuplet into a 16th septuplet at 9:19)
I think I'm gonna start doing two of these at a time for the hell of it. "Letter Experiment" and "Not Enough Mana" are on deck.
If you'd like to purchase an isolated drum movie for either of these, please visit: travisorbin.bigcartel.com/prod...

Disclaimer: In an attempt to stave off potential ignorant comments as I've received in the past, I felt the need for this nigh preposterous disclaimer. I am doing this for myself and for the sake of posterity. I put countless hours into these parts (composing, practicing, etc.) and wish to share them with everyone. I am in no way bitter or regretful; much on the contrary, I share a mutual friendship with everyone in Periphery and intend to keep it that way. Anyway, enjoy the videos!

Dude the two 19" crashes sound so good I almost don't want you to go back to 19/18 haha. I'm so glad you're still doing these videos when you get the time. They're such a valuable insight into your evolution as a player. Seeing how much you led with your left food and chicked the right side hats or the way you composed fill-ins compared to your more recent playing is very interesting indeed.

Oh yah, forgot to mention the first time I tried it is when I started recording the second DIG full-length last year. Adam and Paul (bassist) came down from NYC and did some experimentation. We ended up using the 19/19 on quite a few tunes and I grew to love it from there.

Travis! I'd just like to know....would you be part of Periphery again in the future if you guys wanted? Some years ago i remember reading something like "if the band would not have gone so famous " you would've kept on going. Why? I'm sure they also love what you do, i mean...I'm pretty sure that you could take them into a whole next level! Give it a shot!!!! :D!
@TravisOrbin
@TravisOrbin 6 жыл бұрын
I've never said that. I've been asked this question a host of times and my response, invariably, is if the band's dynamic has changed and they've embraced a more collaborative spirit then I'd certainly consider it.
@perpetualgrimace
@perpetualgrimace 7 жыл бұрын
It's funny, Periphery 1 totally changed the way I thought about and approached music. But listening to these old tunes, they feel incredibly immature compared to anything the band has done from Periphery 2 on, despite the insanely tight and creative drumming (as always)! As much as I love Matt Halpern for his nonstop tasty grooves, I really would love to hear a parallel universe recording of Periphery where Travis stuck around. Especially with Nolly handling the production.
@TravisOrbin
@TravisOrbin 7 жыл бұрын
Speaking as an outsider, it could be due to the fact that the band embraced more of a collaborative spirit post-debut. I'm pretty certain every song on the debut was written by Misha, excluding "Racecar" (Misha/Jake). I'd love to work with Nolly.

The old songs have a special feeling that the new ones don't, a special vibe. Travis's drumming is a big part of it. Plus the original songs didn't have any filler riffs for repeating vocal lines. Just pure instrumental freedom

@TehSeanRadcliffe
@TehSeanRadcliffe 7 жыл бұрын
hey! when playing left-leading parts, do you have to think about it? or is it just automatic the same way playing with your right is, did you start off being really conscious of playing lefty then eventually it became automatic? i've started trying to strengthen my weak limbs and some insight would be really appreciated, anyone else know if he's spoken about this before, maybe in his forum or something? ? ? thnx
@TravisOrbin

When learning/rehearsing parts it isn't much of a challenge, but when improvisin, I'm still more fluid with my right hand leading. The feet do not matter, which is strange.
