This is the beauty of these types of songs back in the day. I had no idea that this was a song about a woman who was "the other woman." when I was listening to this when I was a child back in the 70's. Now-a-days, the lyrics are so graphic and in your face that it takes all the fun out of listening to them. And Phoebe's voice was so mellow that that was all you were listening to. Continue to rest in heavenly peace Phoebe Snow.

Phoebe Snow is another under-recognized singers in American history, though she was quite popular in NYC. Her unusually beautiful voice defied the music industry's tendency to typecast, thus she will always be one of history's truly original voices. RIP Phoebe.

You are 100% on point. She was phenomenal. I saw her in concert in 1983... what I loved about this extraordinary pre 7 or 8 level octive range singer was, she wasn't glamor girl. She came out with a T-shirt, Jeans, her untamed hair, guitar, and signature glasses and sent us into another world. Hearing her in person was an experience where one had to be there to truly appreciate her eccentric style and voice. We were all in awe when we left that concert.

I have a friend who I have loved for 52 years. Anything she speaks to me is poetry. "I'm not religious but I'm spiritual." I get along with animals better than people." "I really enjoyed cocaine back then." "Man was not meant to be monogamous." Hell, she could read from an old tattered phone book and I would be mesmerized. Pure sweet poetry!

On this day in 1976 {July 30th} Phoebe Snow performed "Poetry Man" on the NBC-TV program 'The Midnight Special'... One year earlier on June 20th, 1975 she first appeared on 'The Midnight Special' and at that time also performed "Poetry Man"... The song peaked at #5 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart and #1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Singles chart... Sadly, Ms. Snow passed away on April 26th, 2011 at the young age of 60... May she R.I.P.

I've always honed in on Phoebe's vocals, back in the day, but the instrimental is so in sync, smooth & unique it just feels like an extention of her. It's like the perfect sound track to her if she were a movie. It doesn't distract you from her at all. It adorns her perfectly. Roberta Flacks Killing me Softly comes to mind as one of those perfectly rare songs.

Thanks for this video. I am learning to sing this song. I found that several versions of the lyric are a bit different. Here it’s written in the chorus, “You’re the poetry man. You make things all right.” It kinda sounds like it too. But several other sources say the lyric is, “You’re the poetry man. You make things all rhyme.” It seems like she sings this in the live version, as well. And it also seems like saying “rhyme” instead of “right” goes with the theme of poetry as well.

Amazing tremalo voice and haunting music. She was indeed talented, however the subject matter knocks the wind out of my sails. I can't emphasize with the lovers in the song. He is a selfish cad, and she seems to have no regard for the betrayed wife. To me, true romantic love is selfless and mutually shared between only two people. Too bad her lyrics didn't reflect this same sentiment.

Phoebe Snow's song "Poetry Man" was first circulating on radio around early-Autumn (i.e., Sept-Oct.) of 1974. Do understand that during that era -, individual radio-stations had much more discretion concerning when-or-if they would add a given song to their play-lists, than they have had since the mass-consolidation of the radio industry that has happened since the early-1980s. However, I DO clearly recall that in my home locale of Birmingham, Alabama -, that song received its initial airplay during the time period that I stated. ~ If you'd like to check further into the "chart history" of this song (or any other recent-decades "hit"), you could try researching that for yourself on the Billboard Archives website: www.billboard.com/magazine-archive
