I'm from Germany, I would or should be an EU fan if it weren't for Bjergsen. I started playing league in the beginning of S3 when Bjerg was playing for NIP and I didn´t really understand league at that time, but I understood this player is good and fun to watch, even if he´s playing in a bottom tier team. Then he went to TSM, a big name, I instantly became a TSM Fan and stayed there. If you ask me wich Person I link to League of Legends, I´m 100% sure I would say Bjergsen, not Faker or someone else. Bjergsen is my face for professionel League of Legend. If TSM 1st era ended with Dyrus, this is the end of the 2nd one.

@@jleif7736 you never know, first he could have trained with the other EU mid lane gods of the time in Alex Ich and xPeke. I think he could have surpassed them and even Cap later on (different generation though). At the early days he could have won worlds. to win a worlds title nowadays is harder than five years ago, also cause solo carry is not possible anymore. Bjerg started to play in S2 (2012). Hey Travis, I’m feeling what you’re feeling man. Bjergsen has been my absolute favorite player since his pentakill with Syndra. I’ve been following this player since the very beginning and this shit is so hard as a fan to accept. It’s rough to think that NAs GoaT isn’t going to be playing anymore. NA is losing a lot with this but who knows? Maybe his brain will lead NA to greater things and this opens room for new talent. This shit hurts my soul and it sucks because I don’t think I’m really gonna be watching much LCS without him playing. It hurts to see him go.

It's a kind of a big moment. Bjergsen replacing Reginald arguably marked the second era of professional League of Legends in North America, notably the time when the scene really started to explode. He's been a mainstay since. Of course his retirement is going to have a huge impact on anyone who's been following since. With Bjergsen's announcement, Sneaky no longer on C9, and with new, young players challenging Doublelift for the title of NA's best ADC, it's hard not to see this as the beginning of a possible third era.

same, this is for me extremely depressing, he was the glue of the team, considering though that he's now head coach we might actually have better organisation within the team, as the previous head coach really screwed up on drafts at worlds which set up TSM for some really bad games, admittedly yes they under performed, but the draft seriously reduced their chances of winning anything. Hopefully this move from Bjergsen is for the best but it'll seriously be weird watching TSM without him playing as I've been a TSM fan ever since I started playing league in Season 2 (I am an euw player but after my friend at school showed me CLG vs TSM I was partially cheering on TSM because my friend was a CLG fan, but the team dynamic and their energy really made me enthusiastic about the team and hooked on seeing all their future matches).

Ive lost so much hope in TSM over the years with how they pick up players for the org, this year especially. Johnson, Spica, treatz, and Tactical were all on Academy, but they pick up Kobbe, Biofrost, and Dardoch going into spring and then giving tactical and Johnson to TL,Dig so I really hope this year they start a movement with the rookies putting Treatz on who was the highest ranked solo Q worlds attender on the Chinese super server, and Evolved mid who has done nothing but prove his worth in academy as well as Lost who also has been playing insanely well.

It's sad. With the resurgence of how he played this year, I was looking forward to at least another year with him. At the same time, I can understand wanting to "go out on top" with the LCS Summer win. But, it still hurts. I started watching and playing league right after he came to NA. So my first exposure to LCS was watching Bjerg just curb stomp guys, and that's ultimately what drew me to be a TSM fan. I'm a TSM fan because of Bjerg. I'm glad he's still with the org as the head coach, and happy to know that he isn't disappearing after his retirement like some can tend to do in the eSports scene. Just one more thing. I played baseball to a fairly high level and there was one compliment that kind of stood above the rest when talking about baseball players. That was to say that someone “did it right.” It means that he conducted himself on and off the field the way that you should. That you respected the game, your teammates, your opponents, and yourself and you never tried to make yourself bigger than the game. That you appreciated the work that those that came before you did and you tried to leave the game better than it was when you found it. Soren did it right.

The Zilean, Synda, Akali, Sett, Galio and back in the olden days, the Zed. Everything he did I just adored. He’s the GOAT of NA in my opinion and it’s not even close. He’s so influential. I’m heart broken that I was never able to see him live and now I’ll never get the chance to. It was a dream to meet him and I was just never able to. I’m happy he’s going to be the coach of TSM, but it’s also saddening that I won’t be able to see his prowess on the rift anymore (unless he starts streaming again eventually). This really is a huge shock to me and everyone else who’s a fan of his and league in general. I know he has something up his sleeve to continue TSM’s legacy. I’m excited to see who’s going to be on the roster moving forward and excited to see how’s going to be as a coach. From the bottom of my heart as a Bjerg fanatic and TSM fanboy, thank you so much for everything you’ve done for the organization, the sport and us as fans. You’ll truly be missed as the midlaner.

As a couple other commenters have said, Bjerg is the reason I started watching LCS. I randomly tuned into the broadcast and saw him absolutely dumpstering Team 8 (or maybe Coast) and I was just captivated. I'd been playing League very casually for about a year at that point but when I saw Bjergsen's plays and skill, I felt inspired. I immediately began trying to improve myself and become better in any way I could, all the while tuning in every weekend chanting TSM with the crowd. I've watched almost every TSM game since around mid 2015, every playoff match, every international performance, knowing that at any second, he could pop-off and give NA hope or at the very least something to be proud of. It's an understatement to say he was an influence to the League as a whole. It's pretty fair to say that the pro-scene in it's entirety was affected by him and his play. Pro-players around the world knew his name and knew he was someone to beat, even if the region as a whole never really stood out. But now, knowing we won't see his name on the rift. Knowing we won't hear the casters lose their minds over his outplays. Knowing he won't be able to try and prove himself against the best anymore. Knowing his last performance is tied to the biggest blunder in international history. To say it hurts doesn't even scratch the surface. I know it's selfish, but I just wish he could've given us one last play, one last fight, one last triumph before he threw in the towel. After all is said and done, though, words still can't describe how grateful I am to have been witness to his performance. To be able to have seen Bjergsen in his prime and to see his career flourish in real time. To see him grow as a player and a team mate. To see the impact he had on countless people's lives. As a fan, there's not much else to ask for. The Zilean Mastermind, The Great Dane in the Mid Lane, The Bjergerking. May his reign be remembered until the end of time. TSM TSM TSM

A friend of mine convinced me to watch season 2 worlds. TSM had a midlaner named Reginald. He kept playing twisted fate. Dyrus in the top lane, TheOddOne in the jungle. I was hooked on LCS from then on. Then this little skinny blonde boy from Europe shows up and just... dumpsters the league lol. Watching how aggressive he was and how hard he was wiping the floor with the other mids was so exciting to witness. Then he got to be interviewed and I am somebody who grew up in a sports household and played a lot oof sports on my own. He was so humble for a teenager that was being elevated to god status among his peers. This was so rare for esports players at the time. Mostly they’re snot-nosed teens that had to defy their parents to make their dream work but Bjerg was always down to earth and focused on the goal: being the best. He was a true athlete with a team mindset in a team game. What’s cool is he kept that mentality from 17 through 24 and through multiple wins and championships and mvps. There is no other player in LCS that had that mentality and that drive and the skill to back it up. I’m glad he’s coaching. This is what the league needs to grow, just like all sports. The best players become coaches sometimes and pass that knowledge and mindset on. It allows leagues to grow. Thanks bjerg for all the years of awesome league! Enjoy a vacation and find some time to love yourself man! He truly is the GOAT.

7 years is a good amount of time...and considering how League has only been around for just over 10, it feels like these 7 years have been a huge part of our League lives. We've all watched him go from the baby-faced young Dane mid-lane powerhouse to a TSM icon, and with all the throwback pictures from his fellow League colleagues on twitter...it all feels very bittersweet and I think that's also why Travis sounds so solemn. Bjerg joined the LCS EU in the first year that LCS ever existed...it's all very crazy and surreal when we think about the timeline of events. It's like watching a baby mature and leaving them on their own once they've grown up.

One of my hopes this year as a long time tsm fan was to travel to finals, hoping to see TSM hoist the trophy and see bjerg play. Unfortunately due to corona, never got to see it happen. missed the last chance to see it live :c definitely devastating to miss the chance to see him play live. Been watching Bjergsen since he came in with the Wolves in Europe and have loved watching him play ever since. I was shocked he was retiring, not only because he's Bjergsen, but because he was still at the top of his game and seemed to have gas in the tank. Sad to see one of my favorite players retire but I am sure this has been something he has been thinking about for a while and I hope it turns out to be a positive change in his life. I don't think any of us realize what living in a gaming house for six years and eating, breathing, sleeping league 24/7 is like. I'm thankful for the commitment he has shown to TSM and the League community and am glad to have been able to watch him grow into the star of NA. He played with class and style and he will be sorely missed.

I must admit, as a CLG fan I've had a grudge against Bjergsen for 6 years. I've also viewed him as a rock in the League community for 6 years. Seeing him retire, especially after TSM bombed so hard at worlds really points to how transient and ephemeral this lifestyle is. It's made me consider so much about League pros, NFL pros, MLB pros, Olympians etc. I've never been able to follow the story of one paradigm-shifting athlete (first EU mid in NA, second EU import to NA, best mid in the region since he got there) from start to finish. I think you voiced really well how unusual the life experiences of League pros are, and they're unusual in the exact same way for a physical athlete. Giving up the standard "Finish high school, go to college, find a job" just because you have a love for a game. Bjergsen seems to have landed on his feet, becoming a coach, but I can't help but think about all the other League retirees and where they are now.

You hit it write Travis. Bjergsen retiring is radical in that it just goes to show how much time has past. I feel like it was only the other day when Bjergsen and TSM won IEM Katowice. Or when Bjerg won his first MVP. Or when Bjergsen faced off against Faker for the first time ever at MSI. When you think of Bjerg retiring, who knows who is going to retire next if someone like him retired? Doublelift comes to mind first but there’s also old guards like Xmithie, Aphromoo, Rekkles etc. As much as we say we want new talent to come in so we can advance our competitiveness, it also means we are nearing the times of watching our favourite players putting the mouse and keyboard down for the last time. Which means, we are all growing older and times are changing. Relating back to Bjergsen, it just goes to show how impactful his retirement is in the scene. I can’t imagine any other player whose retirement would shock as much as his is doing right now besides Doublelift and of course, Faker.

This hits hard. My good buddy got me into LCS. He seen my interest in midlane and he was plat so he used to jg for me. He said "If you wanna play mid seriously, watch this guy named Bjergsen". That was the summer of 2015. My good buddy committed suicide a couple years ago and this actually made me cry. If it wasnt for Bjerg, I wouldnt have found LCS and if it wasnt for my buddy Jordan, I wouldnt have found Bjerg. I know its probably not huge to some people but this means so much to me. it was 7am when I heard the news on FB, then i checked youtube and there TSM uploaded a video of bjerg's announcement. I was crying my balls out especially when they showed a video montage. It was so nostalgic. I supported him for half of his career and he was the first ever player I knew of and he was the one who inspired me to watch and played league. It's very surreal to think about the time I first saw him play in the LCS, I was about 15-16 and now I'm 20 . Hearing this news, I looked back and realized that I've seen him grow as a player (3-4 years may not be that long but I wholeheartedly supported him). I will continue to support TSM but it's just not the same not having bjerg as the mid laner, for me.

Im sad but also excited to see Bjerg as a coach. Im 38 y/o and had the chance to see league growth among the years. Bjerg is such an important figure to the e-sport scene, to the game, to the fans in general. We can properly talk of league of legends before and after Bjergsen. He is the impersonation of what a mid laner should be, the one that even his "rivals" looked up to... It's the end of an era, and that makes us realize how much time has passed and how much the game has changed. A fair amount of that we owned to Bjerg. As i said earlier, im sad but also excited. Good luck to Bjerg he deserves it. HAIL TO THE KING! (Sorry for my poor english)

I have met him and you, Travis, multiple times at the LCS studio before covid and he always was so receptive of praise in such a humble way. It'll take so much from a player to even come close to replacing what Bjerg was to any league in league of legends. I realized that Bjergsen is only 24 and that he has been competing in the league since 16. I started watching league in highschool also at 16, and I remember seeing him pop off in his debut split on the CopenHagen Wolves. I just turned 24 a couple days ago and it really is crazy to think about how much time has passed between my highschool days and now barely starting in my early adult career, but for Bjergsen he is closing a huge chapter in his life as a player and now moving to a coaching position. It has been a great ride following him and his growth not only as a player but also a person. I related to him as a kid at 17. I was extremely shy, inescure, softspoken, but greatly introspective and genuine. Maybe that's why I have such a bittersweet reaction to this news. I wish Bjergsen the best in his new chapter of life, it has been a great 7 years, from the ups and downs to the defeats and failures. I say it is bittersweet because I know how much winning means to players like Bjergsen and to retire on a low note after the 0-6 performance at worlds hurts a lot. That being said, Bjergsen is still in the scene as a coach, and I wish him success in his transition. Your legacy will be remembered Bjergsen.

it was a shock, but I'm also wondering if it's so much better for him and his legacy as a top tier player to retire at his high as opposed to try another year and maybe end up in the top three if not middle of the table (don't think he'd drop that far though); it cements his legacy as the player who was in conversation for the top 2 mids and NA and for many, won out on the conversation. he'll always be able to look back at it and see that he was the best at his end
