saw your caption about dbx near the end, id stray away from it, the advantages of tape are workflow and compression, and dbx prevents any and all tape compression. up to you! but just letting you know incase you didnt! its just like a cardinal sin to use noise reduction on tape especially 1/4 and bigger

I had the Tascam 388 which was also called the Studio 8 by the way. I had one customer who wanted me to record Handel's Messiah in a cathedral. I carried the Tasm 388 to the church, used two Rode NT5 mics and recorded the concert. It came out great. I loved the way music sounded when recorded through it as it had a warmer (duller) sound. Here are my thoughts on it. The mic pres are clean but not too clean or sterile. Nothing amazing about them but nothing bad either. They don't have that sparkled top end but have a slight warmer mids. The EQ is one of the weak things about this unit. They are ok, but I have many plug in EQ's including the Cubase Studio EQ which are much more powerful which include hp filters. The EQ is a little grainy, but it does the job. The transport worked very well, and I never had an issue with my machine. It was fun using reel to reel even though it took longer to record a song because you needed to wait for the machine to get to the beginning of the song with rewind. In using tape, the more you redo a part over and over again, you start to lose the high end a little. I always cleaned the tape heads and I demagnetized them after a certain amount of time. I bounced tracks all the time to get more tracks to work with. I used it with a Roland R8 drum machine with this unit. But once drum software came out like the original BFD drums, this unit started to be more limited compared to what the latest technology had to offer. Unlimited tracks with Cubase, so many EQ's, reverbs, and compressor plugins to use on every track. Then with 24-bit recording which was cleaner and had more headroom. I had a Alesis Quadraverb that I used with the 388 but it seemed like working with a dinosaur compared to DAW recordings that not only offered so many more features, but it was faster to record things as well. One concern after using this for a couple of years was the heads started to get worn and it would have cost a good junk of change to upkeep the unit. Since I needed money to switch over to Cubase with a A/D, D/A box with mic pre's, I sold my Tascam 388. I wish I could have kept the machine to do special recording projects with it. In addition, you could get the 2 bus out and input it into Cubase. Then add plug ins and drum software like Superior Drummer 3. Having a hybrid studio with Tascam 388 and Cubase would have been interesting to do at times. I will admit it, I miss the Studio 8.

Very cool! Wish these things were more affordable. I really love the workflow you’ve got going here. I do everything on a MacBook and the convenience is incredible, but I’d love to start things on something like this and then eventually bring it into the box for tweaking. I like the idea of starting on tape entirely… no screens… just listening.

i know they are getting crazy. computer is def fun and easy to use also. i have yet to record on this thing with no computer no camera. if a tree falls in the woods ...
@ProSimex842 жыл бұрын
Look into 4 or 8 track reel to reels, they're generally cheaper then these but have the same work flow, also this is limited to 7.5 inches per second whereas other machines (like a teac 3340) can run at 15ips for higher fidelity when you need it, or 7.5ips if you want more lofi

We want more! Audience demand more! Do you get noticable more high end by speeding up tape?
@travisraab3 жыл бұрын
thanks mute! mm can't say i've noticed a huge difference by speeding up the tape. a couple people commented that there should be more high end on my 388. i wonder if that's true and if i should calibrate it
@burtreynolds29693 жыл бұрын
@@travisraab It sounds fine. Another little trick is to record to tape with the high eq turned up a little more than usual. Then upon playback, back it off a little. You will have more highs printed to tape, then adjust after if too harsh.
@travisraab3 жыл бұрын
@@burtreynolds2969 i almost always forget to do that trick. Does it make a big difference?
@Mute673 жыл бұрын
@@travisraab I think you should avoid the mess of calibration - not that it is to difficult - but if it's not to annoying better leave it alone. Try to eq it a bit instead as Reynolds suggest. I think the clean digital age we live in affects our ears to much; we are not use to noise and artefacts, and when we hit the wrong tones; as listener don't hear or notice it! :)

@@Mute67 yeah I agree. I think it's operating normally. I've heard some other 388s that sounded way worse.

really does your dbx sound like mine? Either one channel is weird, or it's weird depending on the source, or that's just what it sounds like and I'm not used to it. I noticed it on the clean guitar sound.

Hey Travis, thanks for another one! The composition/groove is lovely, relaxed and fresh. You seem to be unsatisfied with your drums performance, but I think it fits well in the song. I have to be honest with you regarding another aspect: the sound of the drums. I think they sound terrible. You dedicated a few mics to your kick and snare, but the rest is missing a bit. And the snare sounds, despite having its own 57, like a plastic bucket. If you were me you'd make priority of fixing this, because it simply tears down the whole mix/experience. If you want to keep using just the two or three mics that's fine, but in that case you'd be better off recording overheads instead. That way you will pick up more of the full kit, the hi-hat, snare, toms, cymbals all at once, and more balanced. The kick will always need its own mic so you can have the opportunity to let it punch better through the mix and place it in the spectrum where it fits and belongs. Initially I didn't want to write you this critical comment, but I realised that I had to, being, well, a friend. I wish I could easily drop by and sort it out together! I hope you understand my point, and that you agree.

Gotta disagree 100%. I think these drums sound really good in a lofi way. If anything, a layered crispy clap/tambourine would be a nice addition. But this song is great and I love the mix/production as well.
@basroos_snafu3 жыл бұрын
@@TheMusicrunner I know what you mean and the song is great. It's the snare though... In one of Travis's later videos it still sounds LoFi, yet the problem I may have with it is solved/fixed.
