My HobbyWing Max 6 went up in smoke after the 2nd run installed in my xmaxx. At the time I was not jumping or bashing, just driving around on flat dirt for 1 minute waiting for my friend to get his RC ready and mine did the same as yours. I was at half throttle, bringing the truck towards me, when it stuttered and went up in smoke. Fizzed out like a match. Still waiting to see what hobbywing/supplier is going to do anything for me.

So, I listened to my hardcore RC friends and insisted I get a hobbywing, only for the max6 to last one session. Im also extremely disappointed on how the warranty is being handled. I have been through this with off brand esc's (not hobbywing) i spoke directly with a engineer of the company and they basically say the physical size of the RC can be too big and cause the overheating smoking. example so basically a 4s capable esc may run perfect on a 1/10 1/8 scale but will fry on a 4s in a 1/5 scale. so keep that in mind when buying esc's if you are running the large rc cars you need to buy the top end esc's...

Max 8 is just too weak for a heavy truggie like the Sledge. I personally think that the Slede would need at least a MM8X or a Max 6 esc. Even on my lighter side Maxx V2, the Max 8 would hit thermal with higher gearing. I have to run my Maxx on stock gearing, which I'm fine with. So yeah. Sucks.
