I love the song. I'm on the 1080p train with this one, and wouldn't have even known about the meaning controversy if not for this and other Discordians reaction. The issue is that the subtitles used for the English lyrics seems like the original song. And the original song, if done by an English writer, is full of double meaning. If this was done by another artist who wasn't underage, no one would be trying to say these lyrics were only cute and not filled with innuendo. People would accept the two meanings. If the Korean lyrics were changed to make the song sound more cute, the English translation should have been changed to keep that tone. Don't blame the audience because the company didn't do their due diligence.

Watching Bang Bang dodge these lyrics was HILARIOUS!!! I knew eventually the reliance on western songwriters and the claim of a lack of knowledge and understanding of the slang and culture a lot of these kpop groups borrow from would collide. The idea that people involved in the making of this group didn't know the connotation of cookie AND pairing it with extremely young looking girls AND completely switching up from their fresh and fun prerelease aesthetic is coincidence and not a carefully constructed ploy is a STRETCH. They knew what they were doing. I feel for these girls though because I sure THEY don't know the connotation and innuendo of the song. The song is just ok but the girls absolutely slayed yet it's hard to not be skeeved out by these lyrics coming from girls this age and that look this young. Add in that Lady's reputation and the Brooke Shields underage CK ads for a reference? It's a mess. The biggest wrong move with their launch, which up to this point had be great. Hoping they'll learn from this and take more care with younger artists.

Since not only K-Pop but Asian mangas have a history of sexualising young-looking performers and characters and this is becoming increasingly controversial, I'm sure the producers knew what they were doing. Koreans may not understand American slang, but they do understand symbolism. I'm a bilingual native speaker in English and another language, but I'm not very familiar with slang in either. But just by looking at the video I knew that cookie must be some sexual innuendo, it didn't even matter what it meant exactly. Fruits and flowers are often used as sexual symbolism in K-Pop videos in the same way.

a lot of people are saying the english translations are wrong and to that i just say that nowadays, the captions aren't translated word for word. they're translated with what the listener is supposed to be hearing if they spoke korean. and also, i noticed that when itzy dropped loco and mafia in the morning, the captions weren't direct translations and also turned out to be the lyrics of the english version when it was released. i've been seeing if the lyrics could fit if they were to release an english version and a good bit of them do. so maybe they're just the english version lyrics. either way it's an innuendo and i don't really like 04-08 liners singing it edit: i don't know if the song was written specifically for newjeans or if they had it and they just gave it to newjeans, but there's gotta be someone that knew. there has to be people that get paid to handle overseas relations when it comes to artists or at least something similar so i don't believe that nobody knew

If you ever have the chance to visit Seoul, you'll be surprised how much American culture (incl. music) has influenced the local scene there. That's partly because Korean Americans relocate to Seoul after graduating from high school/university to work in the industry. Jay Park is a good example. The songwriters and music producers have also worked abroad (e.g., U.S. or UK). K-pop has taken mainstream music to the next level, from the choreography to the vocals and the cinematography in the videos. As for the lyrics, I'm sure the songwriters knew how listeners might interpret the song.

Kpop is (hugely) inspired by western music so even if the writers weren't/hadn't been from the US or western countries in general, there is NO WAY they didn't know the meaning. You can't tell me the people who produce songs don't do their research about how the song could be interpreted in different cultures and languages. No way. If they did do this research or already knew how it might come across but still released it, they are horrible producers. If they didn't do their research before releasing it, they are horrible producers as well. There really is no way out of this. I don't care if "cookie" means CD in Korean slang, the song was set to become popular in western countries so it was already clear that the meaning would be questioned. And you can't tell me the rest of the lyrics don't 100% go along with the sexual concept that we "are making up" according to some fans. The poor girls who had their debut phase marked by such a scandal, they really don't deserve that. I love NewJeans so much.
@dripxenseixensei3822 Жыл бұрын
You're a fool. Only little is influenced by the West. South Korea brought a whole new meaning to music with their distinctive style that's why Kpop is loved all around the world because unlike music from the west which is repetitive, Kpop blends many forms of artistic elements. And not just Kpop, kdrama as well. Some Kpop music have western influence from such as hip-hop but Kpop songwriters, producers etc add their own flavor/spin on it to make it stand out and be better than Western music. To south Koreans and other Asian countries, they don't see a problem with the lyrics because not all Asian countries pay attention to western entertainment. The people who are complaining about the lyrics are mostly Westerners because they have a dirty mind, they're always thinking negative smh. South Korean are too busy doing their own thing not giving a shit about western crazy ideologies hence why many people hating Westen Media and are getting into south Korea entertainment.

To be completely honest, the first time I heard this song I didn't see anything problematic with it. In fact it looked obvious from the MV that the "cookie" is literally a CD and I thought it was a cool metaphor. Then I saw some people had a problem with it and then the girls came to explain it's a fansong meant to show how they've put effort into creating music they want their fans to be addicted to. All NewJeans songs so far sound like things I know teen girls do and experience. I'm with you about how people seriously need to chill. (And about Le Serrafim, Garam released her statement yesterday and lol all the people who attacked her before all the facts came out should probably go read it). Not everything has to be a controversy, but it's like some people just can't help that impulse and seem very oddly and disproportionately invested if its a gg from hybe (just calling it as I see it). These girls are doing well and I hope they continue to do well. They all seem like really down to earth and genuine girls and I wish the best for them.

Honestly I think the problem is that everyone wants to be super educated and a hero without actually having to do anything. Like yeah it may feel good and get you positive attention to stake your claim about how awful and creepy you perceive the lyrics of Cookie to be and how concerned you are for the girls. But in practice, I think making such a huge fuss about it and asserting that the Western/English-speaking perspective is the correct and only one we should be listening to (yikes) is a generally bad thing. I think it's bad for the girls to now be associated with this inappropriate interpretation of the lyrics when it sounds to me like the Korean public doesn't find much weird about the lyrics. "Calling it out" isn't going to make NewJeans any more protected than they were before, and now they have a really big and negative spotlight on them. You can say you love the girls and want the best for them, but the impact doesn't track, unfortunately. I wish kpop stans, especially when it comes to cultural misunderstandings, would learn to pick their battles. Fighting is sometimes necessary, but it always makes a huge mess.

Those lyrics for some of their underage members are a little too much. But overall these girls are talented and visual little beasts. They're definitely the whole package. Their management should be a little more mindful, they're some sick people in this world. Great group though and great reaction video, as usual. You guys keep it real. 💯

I like the song and pretend it’s fine. 18 is still a child in Korea. They are all children in New Jeans.

I love this song and I'm choosing to ignore the lyrics. Who am I to be offended? I was singing Knockin da Boots when I was in elementary school and dammit that's still my song now. That and all of Jodeci and countless other things I had no damn business singing. Do I cringe now when I look back? Sure but whatever. I'm gonna go with the "cultural differences" spin and keep it pushin. The girls are great and I look forward to more. Shout out to Bang Bang for just being Bang Bang lol

@Kate Moore ive look it up and that was an art wall basically, i cant accuse someone of pedophilia for a wall art compose of literally hundreds of pictures unless said art walla is all about child pornography or suggestive photos like the majority not like 2 or 4 pics that are not really exactly child pornography, are basically mood boards. You cant even demand someone by law with those proves, as a lawyer i would lose if i present that case.

@Kate Moore You clearly don't know the references of the songs I was singing at 7/8 years old. Google is free. You can stay mad - I said what I said.

@Kate Moore ive seen much concerning cases in kpop tbh ... these girls have a very much teenager crushes on his class mate kind of vibe or storyline or whatever you want to call it. Their clothes as far as ive seen is very appropiate... they look confortable they wear shorts and not mini skirt they use joggers and oversized shirts etc like their clothes are age appropiate. their songs are also so their age like with the exception of cookie which i do think its suggestive, the other songs are sooo their age like even attention and hype boy were written parcially by the girls themselves. So their songs are good too, like they can be liked by the GP (me) but also their storyline is much more for teenagers like thats their main target audience lets be honest, not 2o almost 30 year old men or women.AND COOKIE which i think its the one song you are talking about, yes i say again its suggestive for my western ears, according to korea gp is not, but its still suggesrive worldwide i could say BUT i take it as if these suggestive song is not really for 30 year old men ok?? like this song fits with their whole storyline. They have a crush on a boy, this song is meant to sing to another 14 or 17 year old boy of their age, so thats why i cant see it the way you see it. Bc when i hear cookie my first though is not ohhh these is sexual, no. its more like ohhh these girls are going for their hype boy or they suggest a kisss or whatever... like i dont sense this sexual thing that want attention of older men or women. BUT if it presents like much more sexual innuendos in every way then yes i would say its like that but until now, i cant say ohhh this is lollita vbes or judge the girls so bad bc its not.

I understand that for them it’s not supposed to be sexual but the English speaking people in their team that help with American fans. Should have been aware, and not given them such suggestive lyrics when translated in English

I have mixed feelings about this song.. When I first read the lyrics I didn’t think about it as deep as some, because the choreo and their fits was very cute and simple.. so it came off as more of a crush song.. I didn’t really see it as sexual until people on Twitter and this reaction video (no hate the reactors.. I totally get it and I’m glad that they are pointing out why it’s a little normal for Americans to listen/read these lyrics and feel weird) I think it boils down to the viewer.. some see it as innocent and some see it as far from it… I’m somewhere in the middle.. and just like all of the other controversial songs that are good, I will continue to listen to this one💀.. Just wish these companies would watch what they’re putting out and learn to keep it age appropriate…it’s very telling that this is a problem that doesn’t seem to end with the music industry While some can listen to this innocently, there are plenty of weirdos doing the exact opposite.. stop giving them endless material of minors being sexualized
