Finally a reactor understands the meaning, I feel more need to see what the girls intended for this song to represent. It would clear up this whole lyric issue. I'm going to copy and paste what i've been posting in other channels cause I see both sides: "On one hand, it’s a cultural difference, and the meaning is coming across wrong, apparently in the native Korean it’s not interpreted with the innuendo that westerners are injecting. Perhaps this is the fault of westerners thinking their way is the right way and not realizing the sovereignty of music from other cultures. On the other hand being a big company and realizing the fan base can be global the agency should have been a little more careful on how certain English words can be interpreted or have slang in other countries. K-pop these days is a bit more global than it used to be. The question though is should the company cater to the larger world, or just Korea."

Apparently the English translation has lots of mistranslations from the Korean one, making the lyrics seem a bit to sexual buy the korean one has a way diff meaning and a more appropriate one. Like its supposed to be "it's only in my house, lets hang out" and NOT "baked at my place only come and get some", "let me hear u speak" and NOT "let me hear u say u want it more". I just hope they change the lyrics so that it can be more appropriate for them

놀러 와 CAN be translated to let's hang out but 놀다 means play and 와 from 오다 means come so the most accurate translation is come to play. So it's actually come and take a lookie it's only in my house come to play. And Let me hear your voice again boy not just let me hear you speak. Also this section: 식사는 없어 배고파도 - no food even tho you're hungry 음료는 없어 목말라도 - no drink even tho you're thirsty 달콤한 맛만 디저트만 만 - only the sweet taste only dessert 원하게 될 거 알잖아 - you know you'll want it This is the literal translation Don't talk on this and just listen to people on twitter if you can't actually speak korean.

As someone who knows korean, the lyrics are translated pretty accurately. While it can be taken more innocently in Korean just from the cultural context (because english sexual innuendos may not translate, while the words do), just purely by the fact that this was originally written by english writers suggests the innuendos were intentional.

I like the song as well but I just feel like even if they gave their context on the song the writers are grown and probably didn’t have in mind that a group with young girls like this would be handed this song so it sucks that they probably didn’t even change the lyrics to fit it being for the “fans” like they said. So, my mind went to the dirty side of what the lyrics could mean and I was shocked. BUT after looking up the meaning of the lyrics, I really don't think it was meant the way that us westerners are looking at it. However, I do think that some of the lines could have been worded differently to avoid such confusion. I personally prefer hurt, attention and hype boy to this song. I will still support NewJeans of course and I can't wait to see what more they do in the future. I just hope the company is more careful with lyrics for young ones from here on out, though I doubt they will be.

For people saying it's a mistranslation, it's not inaccurate enough to change the meaning. The problem is the English writer most likely didn't write the song for children to sing, but since English innuendos aren't really a thing in Hangul, they receive it more literally. It was a bad move on Ador to give this song without more English speaking people to vet the lyrics before it was translated, but I understand the world isn't America so it's not really my place to request that. I really like those girls, but after all the controversy surrounding the producer, I wish they just made Attention the title track.

I always felt a sense of injustice whenever asian music gets twisted by western-influenced listeners. In the song 'Cookie': Bake in Korean is 'ppang gubgi'. Burning CD in Korean is 'gubgi CD'. Both use similar sound of 'cookie'. That's why a cookie roll in at the beginning & a CD roll out at the end. Cookie in asian culture simply means baked dough. It is never associated with a female private part in asian culture. It is no fault of Koreans that it carries sexual undertone in the western culture. Just like Korean 'nae-ga' means I. It is no fault of Koreans that it sounds like the 'N' word used in the western culture as slur against black people. People bashing NewJeans are either ignorant or opportunists wanting to eliminate them from competition against other rookies. The world is a better place when people stop looking through coloured lens. The Korean language deserves respect too.

Like literally as soon as I saw the title of the song my eyebrow went up and so I said let me hold off and get some distance cuz maybe I'm just looking too deep into this. Now after hearing it the lyrics are how I feared they would be but I still don't know how to feel overall. if it was just a matter of the lyrics vs the explanation posted on IG I might call BS cause it does sound a little bit like they knew the lyrics were a bit sus and thought they should explain it which if they are that suggestive you can always just change it to more appropriate lyrics that still get the concept across. However with people also saying that the lyrics weren't translated well and are actually much more innocent than the English subs it just makes me feel more confused. The song is a bop so I definitely want to be able to enjoy it. Ultimately I'm landing at these girls really really have something great, I don't think the community is wrong to be a little cautious and watchful just to make sure they are being managed right and I hope there will be no cause for concern going forward.

The problem with the lyrics is that Americans apparently have dirty minds. If I say "I frobbed her tenterhooks" and someone gets all hot and bothered maybe KPop lyrics aren't the problem. In English anything can be suggestive, the double entendre is in the mind of the beholder. Edited 'cause it got chopped off.

I didn't think there would be crazy people comparing cookies to that of women. People criticized the lyrics of the song, so I thought cookies might be the one that everyone has two under their shoulders. You've given sexual meaning to every sweet food. Sweet foods in other countries usually mean cute love. Only Americans give cookies that meaning. Is that why Americans are so fat? (This article is written by a translator.)

Also cookie has some cute and sweet images. + 'baking cookie(쿠키를 굽다)' and 'making CD(씨디를 굽다)' use same word '굽다'. So it is wordplay. As a korean there is no problem about song.

People aren't attacking the girls for it though, they're concerned about the COMPANY'S intentions, and if the company wants them to sing a song, they don't have much say in the manner as a rookie group. There have been plenty of girl groups in history that have had concepts they didn't agree with but had to promote. People just don't want a repeat with such young members.

I'm not american and my first language also isn't english (I'm from Europe)...I have NEVER heard someone use "cookie" in a dirty way. I knew it was a thing in america, but i've never heard anyone actually use it. This comment section and a lot more f.e. tiktoks, tweets etc. are just projecting their own narratives onto everything they see. Not only with this song and the lyrics, but also with everything else f.e. their outfits so far...so many ppl were complaining about them wearing crop tops and stuff, as if not at least 60% of the minors nowadays wear them...it is literally a normal thing. So let me remind y'all again, in case you forgot about it...ENGLISH IS NOT THE ONLY LANGUAGE IN THE WORLD. Koreans have explained the intentions of this song and so did HYBE! It is not THEIR problem, that y'all always see everything in a dirty and sexual way...That is simply a YOU problem.
@linnyw3423
@linnyw3423 Жыл бұрын
You do realize that the song was originally written in English, right? And the english lyrics are literally the same as the english translation in the M/V. That being said, HYBE should have given a more accurate translation instead of using the sexualized english lyrics. Just FYI :)

@@linnyw3423 The lyrics have been written by a swedish woman and a korean woman, who yes...speak english, but aren't American. Not everyone is forced to know the same slang words/innuendos. Like i said...i speak english, but i have barely heard anyone use this and everytime i did hear it, i didn't see it as a sexual thing, but i just found it cringe. Which brings us to the point, that ADOR even tried to explain to us: Everyone interprets things differently based on their own experience, culture and slangs. BUT that doesn't change the fact, that there IS an original intention behind the lyrics and it is NOT sexual. You're allowed to think what you want about them, but it doesn't change their actual intention. Most ppl who are complaining about the lyrics, don't even care about the girls...and i think that says more than enough😃 And not trying to be rude...but that's a YOU problem.

I think people are overreacting, like they already explained their intention. That's what matters, what you interpret is your own thoughts. All of a sudden the word "Cookie" becomes a word a group can't use anymore because of the western meaning compared to the Korean meaning. It's not like they said the real words of a female genitalia, like real western artists do. This is the reason why in the future it will be very hard for K-pop to succeed. Because there's a problem in almost every video that gets released because "fans" are always trying to look for the negatives even after the group states their positive intentions. If it's a positive intention just except it as what they mean, because all the people speaking up about it and gaining traction hurts the group more than if no one knew about it. I bet majority of people, minors, didn't know what "cookie" meant until this controversy blew up out of nowhere. Even I didn't what it meant until I searched for it on the urban dictionary because of this being posted everywhere on youtube. I always see so called "fans" attacking all the big girl groups. Blackpink, Aespa, IVE, Le Sserafim and now New Jeans they're the only ones who keep getting controversies every comeback for the slightest reasons it's like people love to cancel groups and try their best to make sure it happens. They feel good about it. Because cookie can mean anything, they're not saying the actual word so it can be interpreted depending on who the individual is. I've never heard anyone in my life talk about "cookie" as a sexual term. There's tons and tons of other words people use to describe female genitalia, words that people know refer to it. Anyways all that matters is their intentions were for a different reason. I guess this is what we call modern society, oversensitivity, and will continue more in the future. What used to be considered "normal" will become a problem in the future. Because I think it's human nature to always find problems in everything and be more negative on everything. People who want to be celebrities will keep being cautious all the time to make fans happy, but we know as humans it's not possible to make fans happy 100% all the time.
