For some reason,a lot of the beast wars characters from the toyline who didn't appear in the show has always has the best designs,I'm glad that most of them repainted for the beast wars II toyline and they did appear in the beast wars II cartoon

This is the difference between me as a Beast Wars fan and a lot of G1 fans. I don't want better toys of the original characters, I want new off-the-wall designs of fabulous robots in outrageous color schemes glammed out in bug parts and dissected mammal skins and guts. That's what made Beast Wars exciting, you never knew what would be in the next wave.

I'm weirdly in both camps - not only would I love to see updated versions of the cool characters of yore, I want new stuff with the same level of wild experimentation. Heh, I just designed a transmetal Manterror and have been playing with the idea of Beast Wars style figures made from monster from various different world mythologies - Aztec, Egyptian, Slavic, Aboriginal etc....heh, nobody from Hasbro listens to us though.....

The year was 2007 and an 11 year old me was finally allowed to watch the “violent looking” Beast Wars VHS that had been sitting in the back of mum’s pantry. I was absolutely hooked on the few episodes it came with and wouldn’t watch anything else. So when I found this exact figure and more at a garage sale for $15, mum would have none of it even though I had the birthday money to afford the lot of them. Holding Manterror in one hand and Optimus Minor in another will always be a core memory for me. I often think how differently I would’ve turned out if I’d been able to acquire those goobers. Just having held them at one point had such a profound effect on me.

I managed to pick up this guy myself recently, and I agree with you 100%. Manterror's a big, fun, gorgeous figure. He's also got a Japanese release with a few minor differences - he has a Maximal rubsign since he's a good guy in that continuity, and the all the purple is replaced with clear blue plastic and metallic blue paint, which is about the only way you could possibly make him look any better.

This guy got an homage of sorts in 2010 Brimstone, who seems to be based on a Cybertronian design for Manterror that Don Fig drew up. He turns into a motorcycle, and he looks weird as hell.

One of my biggest regrets is a while back, i was given the option to choose between Manterror and Wolfang at a local shop, and i chose Wolfang. Now the reissue Wolfang is shelfwarming at stores everywhere and there's no Manterrors to be found. Sucks.

This is a fantastic design, one of my favourites from childhood who still survives! I lost the discs, the wings and a pair of bug legs, but slowly but surely I got those parts back, now all I need are the discs!

While in college, I bought all of the Beast Wars Transformers toys. I remember this one, but he was just one of those figures that stood on the display shelf lost in the crowd of all the others. I loved how Hasbro incorporated extra gimmicks into the figures. The disk launchers, missile launchers, propeller butt (looking at you Inferno) showed imaginative engineering. Great review!

THis was my first Transformer ever! I think I love mantises because of this guy. I sadly lost all of his legs and buzzsaws, and then the rest of the damn toy. I really ought to pick up a replacement. It was a shame he didn't have any real hands, but those translucent parts were so pretty.

manterror isn’t actually a praying mantis- he’s a mantidfly! You can tell because their bodies are shorter, and their wings are always splayed out. They aren’t related to mantids OR flies, but they just evolved a similar way. They use their forelimbs to hold their food or yeet unwanted visitors off their leaf.

When I was a little fan I disliked it cause it wasn't in the show, But once Beast wars ended, my appreciation for the toy grew. it's posable, the disks will practically never lose their power, and they will travel if you launch them.

If you position his insect legs just right you can have the bug head and antenna sit fairly flush on the torso. I think if you have the insect feet going up towards the shoulders was how I used to do it but I haven’t messed with my BW guys in so long I dunno.

Fun fact: Only the female Praying mantis have wings but why am I telling you this? We have a male transforming wasp with a stinger when female wasps only have the stinger (edit: I searched it up and Male praying mantises do have wings. BUT they are small
