Askeladd never really needed a sword any duel he had with Thorfinn, he just did that to appease him just so he can keep him doing his dirty work. But he also respects him very much.Askeladd understands what a true warrior and what a real king is. That’s why he could’ve really been the best king. But he truly hates his Dane heritage so he doesn’t believe a Dane should rule any Kingdom that’s why he told Canute that’s he’s just a Viking.but Thors was probably the only Dane he ever met that had the Power to be king but he also knew Thors didn’t want to be king. He really wanted to follow him. That’s why he secretly cared about Thorfinn cause he knows no matter what He can’t change his mind, but he gave him gems every now and then and told him to become a True Warrior

He only didn’t need a sword because Thorfinn was so consumed by revenge that he was easy to anger and make him an easy target, if Thorfinn would’ve been able to master his emotions and keep calm he would’ve beaten Askeladd a while ago, you can see by how Thorfinn is able to get the upper hand over Askeladd but once he gets worked up he immediately fails
