Enjoy a good laugh as I tried to free-motion quilt on an old treadle sewing machine.

I’m 75 ,so of course this is the machine I learned on ! Recently I bought myself a 193os Singer hand machine with a rocket shuttle. I looked at it and wondered how to thread it up as it had no instruction manual but it looked exactly the same as that old treadle. So I took a deep breath and 14 year old me took over ……whats that they say about never forgetting to be able to ride a bike… I didn’t think, I just threaded it up in a moment. It only does straight stitches but it does it beautifully. Happy Days .

I grew up with a treadle. Made so much with my grand mother right there with me.

I learned to sew on a treadle machine at home, and in home economics class in 69 we had treadle machines.

Thanks for the laugh. I expect I'll be doing my learning in private😂.

That was fun to watch. Loved the "How do I make it stop? Stop pedaling!" Who knew? LOL I had never seen a treadle machine in motion before. Looks a little too complicated for me! Thank goodness we have motors now. Thanks for sharing the fun!

As a kid I have fond memories of using a treadle machine. On the treadle have your dominant foot about half a foot in front of the other one this allows you to push 'forward' with that dominant foot and using the toes of the other foot to push down on the back of the treadle which is like a peddling a bike. enjoy cheers Bronne

Thank you. Didn't appreciate that I could free motion quilt with a treadle - might have to have a go - and no it won't be on KZbin 😅

Helen, I have been searching your youtube videos for what "batting" you use and how do you set the blocks together as they are already quilted?
@HelenGoddenQuilts Жыл бұрын
Have you been doing a class? The info is all in the class. Usually cotton and light weight. Once the blocks are quilted, iron and trim leaving a seam allowance. Add your sashings and border. Now another whole piece of batting and backing. The sashings effectively have only 1 layer of batting. Now ditch stitch the sashings and some quilting within the blocks and borders.

well done, it is definitely a learning curve, i have better luck with my feet in a different position, one foot on the top left corner of the treadle and the other on the bottom right and good lord, i do not recommend trying to sit on a desk chair on wheels while attempting to treadle as suddenly your bum is moving slowly but surely away from the machine, just saying.

Yes I have been told having one foot forward makes a better rocking action. The ladies assisting me were too busy laughing to give such sound advice. I get what your saying about a chair with wheels!

I did that as well when I used my mom’s sewing machine a long time ago.

I have one of these machines. How would I go about finding a free motion foot for it?
@HelenGoddenQuilts Жыл бұрын
It probably already has one amongst its accessories. It would be called the darning foot on a machine of this age. You would need to google for someone who restores the machines and ask them about accessories.
