Honestly, while this movie didn't do so well at the box office, I wouldn't call this movie a failure. for one, the animation is masterfully done. such a amazing blend of 2D and 3D at once People say 2D animation is dead and 3D is the future. I think it's because we've had 2D for so long that people started to get bored of it. 2D isn't dead. far from it. it's just not the main animation anymore. but a time will come when 3D movies start to fade out. possibly because a new form of animation is invented or some other reason. but 2D animation will still be alive and well in one form or another

As such, makes sense that even though it's in space, it's all treated pretty much like sailing, with high-tech wooden ships that use solar winds to power engines. helps also that in this setting, space is somehow breathable (although ships do need to generate their own gravity, as endless drifting in space is a threat)
