Treasured Spaces: Why the World needs Pavilions
Sumayya Vally, 2021 Serpentine Pavilion architect and WMFB Trustee, and 2023 Serpentine Pavilion architect Lina Ghotmeh in conversation with Bettina Korek, Serpentine Galleries, discussing the role of pavilions in society, how they have evolved, and why their restoration and conservation are critical today.
Through the work of World Monuments Fund, many of these treasured spaces - including pavilions in the Qianlong Garden, Beijing’s Forbidden City, or Gaudi’s modernist Güell Pavilion, Barcelona (a 2014 Watch Site) - have been conserved for future use and enjoyment. But many pavilions remain at risk, such as Oscar Niemeyer’s International Fairground in Tripoli (a 2006 WMF Watch Site). All these sites have in common to be architecturally important, as well as being dedicated to learning, entertainment, spiritual fulfillment and replenishment, qualities that resonate in modern society today.
