The thing that many so-called conservative Australians could not get their heads around was the fact that the Hawke & Keating goverments endeavoured to restructure the capitalist system so that there would be more social and economic equity. If not, in many ways, Australia would be parallel to the unethical social and economic situation evident in the US today.

Keating was always great at debate because he could predict what he was going to be challenged on, so he'd prepare himself fully for any attack. Of course, the other reason is because he understood economy completely. He clearly had a passion for economics (he still does today), so he could answer anything thrown at him because it was all in his head. He didn't have to read briefs from his departments bout the economy, he just had the information in his head. That, and his ability to predict what he would be attacked on were what made him such a master at debate.

This video sums up the problem with Australian politics today. Political parties are so heavily influenced by lobby groups and donors that they no longer make decisions in the national interest. It is, as Keating said, a corruption of our national affairs. In some respects you could argue that the major political parties in their current guise form a significant threat to our nation's interests. With a huge amount of power under their belt, an overwhelming focus on self interest and a seemingly nonexistent moral compass, their policy directions are readily influenced by anyone with sufficient funds in their back pocket to make the necessary donations.

Meanwhile the media is doing a great job keeping the population dumb and focused on all the wrong things. By the time the people feel the heat, the house is already on fire.
