Paul Keating - our role in Asia in the Trump era

The election of Trump and the victory of the Brexit movement are the most obvious examples of the populism driving countries to become more insular. This combined with China's return to a power of the first order means that Australia faces an increasingly uncertain world.
Hear from former Prime Minister Paul Keating about the path Australia should forge in this rapidly changing world. He has long argued a greater independence in Australian foreign policy could be beneficial and allow more focus on our immediate neighbours: Asian countries to our north.
Speakers:
The Hon. Paul Keating
Few Australians have thought more deeply, originally and provocatively on Australia's foreign policy challenges than Paul Keating. This is a unique opportunity to hear his thinking on a 'new' world with Donald Trump as American President.
Allan Gyngell AO
Professor Allan Gyngell is an Adjunct Professor in the Crawford School of Public Policy at the ANU. From 2009 to 2013 he was Director-General of the Office of National Assessments (ONA), prior to that appointment he was the founding Executive Director of the Lowy Institute for International Policy.
Professor Nick Bisley
Professor Nick Bisley is Executive Director of La Trobe Asia and Professor of International Relations at La Trobe University. He is currently the editor in Chief of the Australian Journal of International Affairs.

Daryl B Because he came through a period where the quality of politicians were supreme. He was taught the skill of leading for the benefit of the people. A true leader unlike Howard. Howard does not even come to his shoe straps. He only lost because the people of our time wanted change and thought it would get better. The conservatives only know how to give monies to gain your vote. Keating believes in real development and long term success. It’s too our demise, for loosing Keating too early. Another two or three terms as prime minister we would’ve seen a better and richer Australia.

@@clubberlang589 Howard was suppose to lift the superannuation from 9% to 12% but never did and now we have the Libnats wanting to let people just have their super so they can spend it . I think Keating's original idea was it would increase to 15% eventually , but then Howard and the GFC and now we have the biggest do nothings this country has ever seen . Six years no energy policy to support renewable's and a ruined NBN . Both would have created jobs in rural areas and farmers a second income from making power. $8000 dollars per windmill a farmer can make by just having them placed on their property . It would seem the Conservatives like the farmers coming to them for handouts so they can buy their vote.

@heath gallagher I have come to think that back in 1972 when the United Arab Emirates became fully independent of Britain things were bound to change because of the magic word OIL. Not that there is oil everywhere in the middle east. There were tariff cuts during Whitlam's time too. On top of that you had the oil shock of 1973 followed by a credit squeeze in 1974. The system with the exchange rate prior to December 9 1983 where the value of the dollar was set by the Treasurer, Governor of the RBA and the Secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet was only introduced in 1976. There was reform towards what is current in Australia today undertaken in the Whitlam and Fraser period, only not as drastic or as fast paced as it was during the Hawke-Keating era.

The problem with globalisation that is never spoken about is the process of globalisation was a distribution of wealth and work from rich nations to poor nations. But as you distribute wealth and work from rich nations you transfer poverty from and work from poor nations to rich nations. Hence the rise in unemployment and de-industrialisation in western countries, and the rise in poverty in western countries.

Paul is so eloquent as usual. But four years down the track, Australia has chosen to toe the USA's line TOTALLY to the point of creating a toxic environment when it comes to discussing China. It does appear that Paul seems to understand the Chinese thinking well, and the ability to carve a future within its Asian neighbours as our neighbours grow richer and change the geopolitical landscape. Let's see how we progress and whether the wise words of Keating will come back to haunt us and what we did recently AUKUS and all.

It is so good to hear a real statesman, someone akin to JFK, speak, his wise words making such a contrast with those of the current Australian Government leadership. Keating is our only ex PM who has soomething really worthwhile to contribute to today's debate or lack thereof. While I don't agree that the sell of our Commonwealth bank and Telstra was a good idea as it was the beginning of the end of the age of egalitarianism, I do greatly regret the lack of anyone in Government at this time with the intellectual prowess of Paul Keating, who makes subtle distinctions between the role of the US in the modern world versus the world of USA hegemony, that are completely lost on those who are fixated on the USA IC's view of the world which has proven to be wrong so often in the last 30 years or so.

Ben Sanderson : Because if he remained in office in Australia during the referendum of 2001. It would’ve been proposed in such a way that would’ve made it appealing to accept and embrace. But when you’ve got Menzies protege’s such as Howard and Abbot; who managed to loose there federal seats by the way. Did what they could to impose self righteous view onto Australians. The conservatives are only good at pointing out the negatives of an idea. Because they hate change and embrace a change that would make a positive. We are know still subject to the Royals of Windsor. That part of our taxes and wealth goes to them. I believe to this day our electoral system is manipulated, that he was expected to lose either way.

Mr. Keating instead of a comment, I would like to make a statement: At my mind, I was, and still, I am, The Labour man, however, I've been treated very shabbily by the section of The Australian Maritime Union, because I dare to speak my mind on the behaviour of some members of the mentioned Union, for example, I objected to the throwing out chocolate bars overboard because Agent did not provide The Marrsbrars, as well as, I did not allow to use Satelite Communication for free, it was expensive at the time, and it went from bad to worst, six security guards attacked me, two drag my children away, and four did me once over, braking the rib on the left side of my body, the nightmare continued, I was thrown to the city watchhouse and interviewed by drank Solicitor, who refused to give his name or business card, then thrown to The Royal Brisbane Hospital examined on my right side of the body and after Dr. Phsiciatrist send to mental Clinic, the story is much longer, but what I am trying to say is, that I can forgive all that, but never forget. And the only thing I DEMAND! from The Australian Authorities is not the compensation at all, but my Old Aged Pension, and the money stolen by AMP, my private contribution, and sorting out problem with my Citizenship. Thank You. I deserve some dignity after more than thirty years in this beautiful country of Yours.

I think Prime Minister Hawk was our last great leader. The golden age of leadership. i remember lining up for an apprenticeship at the xxxx brewery at age 18. A mate and i were there 2 hours before the doors opened and there was still 20+ people in front Didn't worry us, as there was a few apprenticeships and a few permanent jobs going. Five minutes before the doors open, four car loads of Vietnamese men and at least 6 in each car pulled up opposite the front door. You could do that in those days. They joined the end of the line. Fair go. when the doors opened to accept applications, the Australian Vietnamese men rushed to the front. i am amazed to this day that nothing was reported in the news. It was a bloodbath. Years later i was making hearing aids. we had both sides of the security forces in the balkan wars, horrific massacres, ethnic cleansing, torture, rapes and the use of concentration camps. what i had to do to keep these people from tearing each other apart still traumatises me . Still nothing like what they went through. One woman described to me the rape and torture of her and her sisters and young brother by the croatin forces. one of the best workers was a croatian colonel and lets not forget the African continent. the australian africans have brought their trauma to us, but in each case, i've described, it has taken decades toto assimilate each of these traumas into our society. These high fluting, high and mighty creatures don't acknowledge the fairdinkum, fair nature of the regular Australians. I don't trust Keating.

Mark, your experience is from another world, and I am not for one minute suggesting it's not valid. You also mention a lot of suffering from this past, and I hope you are in a good place now. Keating and Hawke had a vision that represented the Australian worker and our sense of self, sense of identity and independence. He is not Jesus, but he was working class with a strong Irish Catholic background. I'd mention that he stood up to those in power and did great things like mandate superannuation, to help the worker out in retirement, and be a pool of money that encourages investment in infrastructure that benefits Australians. Our reputation in Asia, being a part of rejecting apartheid... Howard used fear of brown people in boats to win an election while defunding training , uni, tafe, while opening up visas for foreign workers to come here and ignore awards. Lib policy is protecting franking credits, and casual working conditions... I would trust Keating and gladly shake his hand.

In the context of India, and perhaps many other parts of the world, it seems the idea of globalisation is not responded with resentment, so long as it is argued upon for its benefits by communities seeking the right to self determination. For example: Many Hindus in India do not want a Muslim to craft foreign policy. Likewise, there are Muslims in India who would prefer to have an Islamic leader negotiate trade deals with rest of the world. If not religion, something else might be the driver for self determination. Race, Language, Profession, Ethnicity, Gender etc.

With the evil forces he was up against he did all he could to create a better world for low & middle income working class people & saw decades into the furure with worker rights, worker safety, longevity, super annuation, pensions, penalty rates & focus on family income & quality of life with work life balance & taxing the wealthy & big business to pay for the nations debts & boosted economy to the point that under his leadership Australia was the booming land of milk & honey, so that ignorant pitiful people like you born in your silver spoon crasle can still enjoy & inherit some of those old riches he set in stone a long time ago. What did you do today? Long live Paul Keating.

Bollocks. Illiterate bigot like you have no independence of thoughts and would not comprehend the complexities of our current geopolitical situations. It's weird that you express the desire to be free of Britain, then you undermine Taiwan's desire to be free and independent of China. Double-mouthed much?

At face value you have a point. But listen more closely next time. Keating said keep your democracy, your flag etc. but don’t say you’re not Chinese. He never said we’re British?!

@@zoltanrudolf9413, the problem is, you don't have the right to tell them that to call themselves, especially since they are a sovereign nation. What Keating is doing here is simply being afraid of, and psycophantically praising, China.
@zoltanrudolf9413
@zoltanrudolf9413 2 жыл бұрын
@@blazeovich I think we owe it to each other to unpack Paul’s point and his choice of words a bit more. The statement “don’t say you’re not Chinese” implies that One China is about some sort of ethnic solidarity. You and I both know (and so does Keating) that One China means nothing less than the total dissolution of the nation-state known as Taiwan, it’s incorporation into the PRC and a red and yellow flag being raised in Taipei. There is a note of hypocrisy at work as well as a sense of having one’s cake and eating it. They are still a lot more ethnically Chinese than Australians are ethnically Anglo-Saxon or culturally British. Of course, the Chinese Communist Party is NOT Soviet, it is Communist AND Nationalist. Unfortunately, I haven’t got all night.
