As a political refugee from behind the iron curtain 35 years ago I hated everything associated with the left. Hated the USSR/Russia, China and the rest. Yet first time in my life I voted for a leftist Mr Keating. Hear him again I'm very impressed how sharp and real he is. The world has changed. My illusion of the western dream has crumbled. Freedom is gone. We are bombarded with lies from our governments, I have witnessed the brutality against our citizens during c..I'd, we supported unjust wars and the list goes on. Now this Ukraine warmongering and demonisation of modern China, sticking with aggressive America which causes death and destruction everywhere while China is building and producing things beneficial for all and is not interested in any war. It's time to realise the US is a Titanic. Get off that death trap and get friends with China and prosper our region where we are. China is the future.

@X Crockery The way you cling to the belief that China intends to attack one of its most important trading partners for no reason, resulting in no actual gains but huge losses for all parties involved demonstrates an absolute lack of understanding about Chinese history and philosophy. The fundamental flaw behind the thinking of all China hawks is the same: they unconsciously superimpose Western imperialist history onto modern-day China. This basic misunderstanding is a result of fear and paranoia, as well as an arrogant and stubborn refusal to actually engage with our Chinese neighbours in good faith. Rather than acknowledge China's incredible progress, the hawks immediately think in terms of conquest and war. They betray their own desire to subjugate others, especially those of non-Anglo ethnicity. Basic psychology of projection.

Paul Keating is turning out to be the only sane person in Australian political circle. Every politician wants Australia to be US' 51st state. Australia is not really an independent country at the moment. The US is sinking, their banks are all collapsing. Australia's biggest economic partner is China. The reason why Australia is unaffected by 2008 recession and not experiencing what Europe and UK are experiencing right now, is because the money are flowing from China, Indonesia and India. Yet the Australian politicians can't see this; they rather partner with the UK in whose economy is worse than Russia. And US which had reached the debt ceilings. Unbelievable.

Regardless of the wisdom of nuclear submarine deal undertaken by the present Government, when it comes to being “the worst deal in history” Paul Keating needs to look no further that his own incompetence when he was in office. The ‘failed rock band manager’, seeking to call himself “The world’s greatest treasurer” needed to balance the budget. He did this by selling off the Commonwealth Bank, which robbed future governments of any control over interest rates, and thereby inflation. Initiating the boom-bust that we are enjoying today? He then went on in 1985, to being instrumental in the ‘Negative Gearing’ legislation, with the naive belief that it would make more housing available, and boost the economy? In fact, by the figures of later reports, it had the very opposite effect, not only did it encourage states to end involvement in social housing, but 90 percent of the speculation investment went into established homes, and not new constructions. The result was what we have today, with an estimated 150 thousand homeless, and soon to be rising as more homes are foreclosed on, and people are forced onto the streets? When Paul Keating, now advisor to the CPC, China, talks about the “worst deal in history” he should consider the thousands of families and children his incompetence forced into poverty and ruined lives.? And the stresses that broke so many families apart. Perhaps he should have an Oscar for the biggest failure in history?

One can forgive Keating's sometimes fairly terse responses to the questions put to him by the journalists at the National Press Club. Without exception, the questions put to Paul Keating never veered from the now hackneyed tropes pushed by mainstream media organisations, in support of US hegemony. Keating's straight-talking is a breath of fresh air and his pragmatism is to be applauded in a world that has lost touch with reality.
