I worry about using it because chickens respiratory tracts are very sensitive. That stuff will cause a lot of harm for anything to breathe in. Even just the sinus. Think about what happens when it’s in the ‘dust bath’. They’re going to breathe it, no way around it. Also, have you ever put it on your skin? That stuff will be inhaled but what’s worse, it dries the skin out soo much it’s awful!

You have to spray the chicken house and nest boxes etc walls etc and change the nesting material.. Otherwise the chickens will just get more mites/lice onto their bodies right away again. The chemical/s, will not stop them getting more onto them, maybe day or so, but that's about all they'd stay off, if that. It's not as residual as you may think. Lice/mites love to deposit/lay their eggs onto wood, plastic, steel. Because it's great surfaces for the eggs to stick on. Hot and wet weather will increase insect numbers also. But check birds all year round. Straw bedding can contain insects also. With ivermectin be careful as because how itt works, if you miss judge dose, you can't just wash it off to break chemical down, it could continue to work on birds system. Love you birds and chooky palace. ♥️

Can you share what you do for their coop after treating the bird Or what you would recommend? Guessing clean out completely, maybe spray the same stuff you dipped them in maybe full strength(not sure if you dilute never used it even though bought some and NEED to use it) then maybe pour or sprinkle that diatomaceous earth on the ground and maybe along the roost if it doesn’t make them slip and maybe in nesting boxes after cleaning out completely and spraying chemical? Do you treat again after ten days for any eggs that might have hatched and if so would you have to do it all over again as far as cleaning everything out and spraying all over again (the coop that is). Do you give the same amount to larger chickens (four drops?) same amount for scaly leg mites? Also random but have you ever used it on rabbits or cats? And if so how much ?

@Tree-House695 ай бұрын
@shivahess6303 It keeping mites away is how it was working, someone can be early on with its use and not immediately obviously kll off the birds, often toxins build up slowly and eventually cause things like seizures and organ failure. You could feed a dog some chocolate here and there every day and it might not immediately pass, but overtime you're reducing its quality of life, it's lifespan, and increasing how much of toxic components for the animal are built up. You could also give a child a cup of bleach every other day and, again, there will be discomfort (reading a chickens discomfort would be less clear, no?) But they wouldn't immediately pass, but their lives would get worse until their body gives out. Someone proclaiming something works that turns out toxic to certain animals is not a sign that it's actually ok and works.

Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a natural, non-toxic powder made from the fossilized remains of tiny aquatic organisms called diatoms. It has various uses, including pest control, and it can be beneficial in managing lice and other external parasites in chickens. Here’s how it works: ### 1. **Mechanism of Action:** - **Physical Abrasion:** DE is composed of sharp, microscopic particles that can puncture the protective exoskeleton of insects, including lice. This leads to dehydration and ultimately death of the pests. - **Desiccation:** When lice come into contact with diatomaceous earth, the powder absorbs moisture from their bodies, leading to desiccation and mortality. ### 2. **Application:** - **Dust Bath:** Chickens naturally take dust baths, and adding diatomaceous earth to their bath can allow them to coat themselves with it, helping with pest control. - **Direct Application:** DE can be lightly dusted directly onto the chickens’ feathers and skin, particularly around areas prone to lice infestation. ### 3. **Safety:** - Diatomaceous earth is generally safe for chickens and humans when food-grade DE is used. It is free from harmful chemicals and poses minimal risk when handled correctly. ### 4. **Considerations:** - Ensure the environment is well-ventilated when applying DE, as the dust can be irritating to lungs if inhaled in large quantities. - Regular monitoring and applications may be necessary to effectively manage lice infestations. ### 5. **Complementary Measures:** - While DE can be effective, it should be part of a broader pest management strategy that includes regular coop cleaning, monitoring, and maintaining good overall chicken health. Using diatomaceous earth can be a natural, effective way to help control lice in chickens, but it’s important to combine this method with good management practices for optimal results.
