In my house aquariums we always treated ick with salt and higher water temps. Cleared it right up. Always best to avoid it by keeping things really clean and aerated. Seems to creep in from dirt and dirty fishies. Cheers

@@RobsAquaponics I don't name them. Refer only to the breeding male, breeding female/s. When I first started my male breeder got up to 16" in a 75 gallon, most meat I grew indoors in one fish, far too large for breeding despite repeat successes. I tried clove oil with that one, and I will be the first to tell you -- ice water works better if you're interested in the least amount of pain possible. In the process I did learn a trick. Tilapia truly do take on the flavor of their water, they have permeable flesh so in just 15-20 minutes of clove oil the meat was ruined by the flavor of cloves. I discussed this with an expert and they said you can put rosemary in your purging tank filter to pre-marinade the fish. It works well and I never stop growing rosemary. I did however get stuck with three huge, highly spoiled goldfish! Respect to those that don't want to kill. When you don't need too, you shouldn't. But even for vegans, quoting an Inuit proverb, "The problem with being human is that our diet is comprised entirely of souls."

Great video. Years ago before becoming a electrician I use to manage a fish store. Like humans lots of diseases/viral infections are present. Once getting stressed is when the parasites or disease can get a hold and get traction to make the numbers dangerous to the fish. In some systems people use UV sterilizers to run the water through. It kills the parasites as they go through the UV filter. Biggest issue is when the bulbs get old and are not replaced your fish are use to living in to clean of water. Have a great day. Love your content 🙏

R u in the US Ken? I was wondering about H5N1, bird flu, affecting the fish in our aquaponic tanks. We know this yr stain is affecting more mammals than we've ever seen before. Last I heard around 900 people have gotten sick, my understanding 1st time humans have gotten sick. The death rate in humans is 53% which is higher than COVID or even ebola. At this time CDC is saying it cannot b spread human to human. So if the birds poop on the garden which dishes into fish tank will that cause the fish to get sick? Then pass on to humans again? I put my chicken manure in my compost which eventually gets used in the garden. Wild birds live in all my trees & eat from the ground w the chicks & squirrels. No way can I stop wild bird poop from infecting my space

There fish heads & guts make excellent fertilizer. Then to heat your greenhouse (whatever type) put a compost bin in there adding all the fish waste & manure, I use my chicken waste,. Then have everyone pee on it to activate it. It'll heat up real nice so u can have winter tomatoes from the garden. I have friends who put their boxes of early spring starts which keeps roots warm vs using the expensive seed hearing matts

Hi Rob, I would love more information about salting the system. Do you just salt the fish tank or the complete system ? You said to keep dosing, how much salt can a system handle? The koi guys seem to salt ponds often. Thanks mate Love ya work
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics Жыл бұрын
Hey Mark. The whole system is salted as I don't have it set up where I can isolate the fish from the plants in this configuration. I could have in the old system without a worry. Above 3ppt will cause issues with plants like strawberries, onion family, cucumbers & a few others. The fish are looking better so I'm about to start dumping all the water from the solids filter when I clean it. That will reduce the salt level over the next few cleans back to about 1ppt which I'll be happy with. Hope that helps some mate.

I'm having my 80 yr old father help w the aquaponic build &; auto fill wicking beds. I pulled up Rob's Backyard Aquaponics book on his laptop Dad: "I don't need instructions I know what to do" Dad: "do I have to read everything or just certain chapters" Me: "it's made so u can easily jump back & forth. I know your a genius dad, but Robs been doing this for decades & has some real useful suggestions, what's has worked/ what hasn't, how to build system inexpensively. His climate is like ours minus the extreme heat & cold we've been experiencing" 5 minutes later- Dad talking to himself: "oh... Ok... Good idea... Didn't think of that" Me: laughing inside my head 🤣🤣🤣!!

@@RobsAquaponics For now, I'm doing the 275 gal IBC. Fish tank will b chop & flip & other 2 will b cut in half for beds. That's all I can fit under my high tunnel for winter growing & hopefully help hold (some) heat in fish tank. The more the earth warms the colder the artic blasts get in the deep south -25 F team temp was brutal! My rainwater IBC froze solid when flash freeze hit. The IBC I keep inside the high tunnel to help mass heat stayed liquid I'm converting all my livestock mineral pots, idk how many gallons, approx 3' diameter I'm turning into wicking beds. Might get couple more IBC to go w them. Going to connect wicking beds to rainwater catchment for auto fill. Last summer high heat & drought I burnt thru 1500 gal water collection by end of June so I'll have to have city water back up $$$$ So that's the plan today, hopeful it'll keep garden alive this yr. Forecasting 2-4° hotter than last yr which will b too hot for flowers to turn to produce. Might time temps never dropped below 84°F. Still thinking of the geothermal greenhouse. Right now everything is experiment. 8f US has another summer like last yr food will become major issue. Bird flu has eggs $10 dozen. About 900 humans have caught it this yr with 53% death rate. So far CDC says man can't spread to man, but waiting for new laws on raising chickens to hit. How's vacation going? U find great land yet? I was looking at some land in Queensland. I was told they filmed Lord of the Rings scene there in the mountains. My piggy bank was shy several million shy. "But the cost isn't this high in your USD, it's only...". Had to laugh at that one
