Clozapine is only used when treatment with 2 different antipsychotics has been unsuccessful. It is also the only antipsychotic that is effective in treating negative symptoms.

Hi Dennis, thank you for your question. I have never heard that untreated psychosis can lead to dementia. However, there are cognitive deficits in people with schizophrenia that are part of the illness, and like negative symptoms, are difficult to treat. Best wishes, Beth
