The part where the teacher asks him to focus and it plays over multiple times hit me hard at how accurate that was. You don’t have things play over audibly and visually like the video but that moment of embarrassment plays over and over in your head. Other times when someone is giving you step by step instructions, I play the first step over and over in my head so I won’t forget it, meanwhile I’m not paying attention to the subsequent steps.

Yeah, this is relatable to me too. I replay moments of interactions over and over in my head after they happen, especially if they were negative. It’s horrible.
@extrapathos2 жыл бұрын
I don't have adhd, but I do have social anxiety, and that part was relatable. I conciously replay interactions in my head all the time, negative and positive, in part to confirm them. Positive interactions I think about for validation like "that went smoothly, good job! or "that was a fun time, now how can we get that more often?" Most of the time I'm replaying negative interactions to review and rationalize them, make sure I have a legit reason to worry about them. Asking myself "will this impact my reputation? Do they think I'm weird? Am I in trouble?" And the answer is usually either "eh, they'll forget about it, they probably didn't even notice" or "oh god I'm fucked." In fact I replay _every_ interaction, firstly assessing whether it's pos or neg. Might have something to do with my ocd as well.

i really love this video. i often come back to it and rewatch it and now ive watched it being officially diagnosed with adhd. it is insane how mutch i relate to this video with the way the boxes represent audio distractions in the walking section and even to how it is easy to hyperfixate on previous interactions. Also not to mention the way the mother reminds me alot of most of the adults in my life telling me to sit still listen and pay attention even though i struggled so hard to do so. of course this gut wrenching feeling of not being able to "listen" or "do as your told" goes away once the barrier is broken and your parent or carer gets you tested and you finally have an answer for your struggles. (at least for me) i found it made the insecurity alot less significant because i was no longer an idiot (in my eyes) but i had a disability! great vid! (even though this was posted 8 years ago)

@-thunderstar-64142 жыл бұрын
There are two types of ADHD. The first type, what people pay most attention to and put stereotypes for ADHD on, is the hyperactive one. That basically means they have a hard time sitting still, and it's a little more physical than mental. The second type is innattentive. This is what I believe is mostly seen in this video. It's more mental than physical. Please, anyone, correct me if I'm wrong! :D
@Zwielicht912 жыл бұрын
@@-thunderstar-6414 it's a bit more complex than that. It's true, there are the mostly inattentive and mostly hyperactive type but for most people with ADHD it's combined. They are both inattentive and hyperactive. It's different for everybody. I'm more on the inattentive side but that doesn't mean that I won't sometimes fidget or do other "hyper" things. Also inattentive isn't the best way to describe it; the video actually captures that nicely. It's difficulty regulating attention. Attention is still there, not necessarily on the thing you want your attention to be on. Having to focus on something which isn't of interest can sometimes literally be impossible. Fidgeting often helps but it's a life-long journey to figure out strategies that help, and something which helped yesterday might not work today.

You're not the only one. My parents and teachers told me the same thing, and I tried as hard as I could, but then as an adult I realized - it is futile. You have to re-organize your lifestyle to fit your brain. ADHD had an evolutionary advantage when we were hunter-gatherers, when your unpredictable behavior meant no one would mess around with you, as they could not know how you would react. But now in sedentary societies, it has lost that edge.

That is the most common thing we will hear growing up and it causes us to think we are not trying that we are failures. Sad that just a little bit of support how much we can accomplish yet even when our families and friends know how much it benefits our everyday lives they will only bring up the failures and never build you up.
