Hi Guys!!!
This video introduces the process of making a Eco-Friendly Plate.
▶Craftsman Profile
Tsutomu Matsuda / Matsuda Lacquer Studio
He has been engaged in lacquering Buddhist altars and ritual articles for more than 50 years in Kyoto. He sublimates the techniques and experience he has cultivated over the past 50 years into accessories that glamorously adorn the body and soul of people. He produces genuine handmade crafts that stubbornly stick to handcrafting.
▶Craftsman Passion
"Repainting traditional art into modern art"
With the demand for lacquer decreasing rapidly, we want to convey the beauty of lacquer to a wider variety of people. With this in mind, we have incorporated the traditional techniques we have cultivated over the years into accessories to make lacquer more accessible to people.
▶Achievement
Designated as a traditional craftsman in 2014
Received award for Master Craftsman of Kyoto
Received award for the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Silver and Silver Rays
He has received many other awards for their work.
Please enjoy watching the Japanese craftsmanship!!!!

I'm not throwing my keys onto a $400 plate! Again this is a precious work of art and needs the respect art deserves. Maybe some wrapped candies, but nothing wet, scratchy or harmful. I was fascinated by the multiple layers on the beetle. To get that under glow from the gold dust was ingenious. Thank you for sharing this video.

Absolutely breath-taking. Such a simple thing, I thought, when I first started watching. But the care and the skill, and the end result of the iridescent beetle - absolutely breath-taking. (I must admit, I panicked a bit when he laquered over the gold dust layer! How clever!)

Thank you! Dust is the biggest enemy of lacquer. Therefore, there is a constant tension in the workshop to always take the utmost care. We want this wonderful technique to reach more people all over the world.

Beautiful. As this “dish” ages and is wiped and cleaned more and more colour will appear on the beetle. An elderly friend (many years ago) who had lived most of her life in China had a beautiful, very old, black lacquer cabinet that had a beautiful pattern that only emerged from the lacquer with age. Such a different philosophy to our IKEA world.
