In recent years, the younger generation in China is more inclined to use 小姐姐（little/cute older sister）or 小仙女 (Fairy Girl) to call young lady. If you call someone older sister directly, it actually implies that the they looks older than you. In short, don't do it

Talking to young female in China you need to be careful what to call them: 小姐,Young Miss is a BIG no no, because that's what you call prostitutes in China 姐姐，or elder sister, is fine for most, but not for the age sensitive 大姐 or big sister, colloquially means auntie, so again a big no no, unless the female is 20+ years older than you 小姐姐，literal translation "little elder sister" is preferable by most young female, because you are acknowledging that they are young by using "little" but also showing respect by recognizing them as their elder sister.

In Vietnamese and Cambodian culture, we always refer to any a female older than us from 10 or 15 years as older sister. Some will call you auntie instead.

It's not abt being called sister.. He called them " jie jie" which means elder sister which means he is calling them old and thinks that they are older than him.. In Mandarin there are different terms for older sister and younger sister ( jie jie for older and mei mei for younger)... Basically the subtitles are bit unclear here... P.s i am not Chinese.
