We have shellbark, red, shagbark, and bitternut hickory growing here in southern Minnesota on the zone 4/5 line. Shellbark is perhaps the most vigorous and robust of them all. Mr. Leopold, your videos, and the many trees planted by your inspiration, will one day be a lasting part of your legacy.

I dug up a sapling a few years ago in my woods and moved it to my lower pasture which does tend to be very moist to damp, it is doing very well it has a few years to produce but took me a while to figure out which hickory it was, it has those big leaves like that too. I planted a willow oak a few years ago like 6 years ago, last year seemed to be stressed for some reason but recovered. it seems to be okay now. i planted a black jack oak (tho I thought that is what it was) in the lower pasture and it only lasted two years and died, I found it in the woods now I think it might of been either a bear oak or blackjack

No, I thought they were till I ate a Bitter Nut Hickory. Squirrels eat Bitter Nut Hickory with no problem.

Adult Shellbark and Shagbark Hickory trees provide Summer roosts for the endangered Indiana Bat and nesting for the Brown Creeper bird. Planting these near your favorite fishing spot may one day result in reduced mosquito and moth populations.

I think I have one of these standing about 40 feet tall. Still no nuts yet. It's beautiful broad leaflets arrivalled only by my catalpa tree.

fourty feet tall how old is it? age determines (from my experience) when they produce not size. I believe they have to be 15 years old approx before they start to produce nuts, my chestnuts produced after about 12 or so years but got really going at 15 and we started them from seed (chinese chestnuts) one produced at same age even tho it was almost half the size, we planted them both at the same time.
