Thank you for the video. I found it while searching how to remove the rear wheel (looking into the non-drive side the o-ring inside makes it look like it won't accept a 6mm hex/allen). So after watching your video I checked my rail hanger fastener. At first I set my torque wrench to 15 Nm and it moved a bit. So it was a new bike with a single 20 mile ride and it was at less than 15 Nm.

Great content. Thankfully I found your video before I had any damage. My rail had 11 miles on it after a ride in the woods and it came loose. I could move the Rear Derailleur by hand. I checked the product support page for the Trek Rail and sure enough the Derailleur Hanger should be Torqued to 25Nm. Great call and great catch!!! Trek should put out an advisory on the Trek product page as I'm sure this is happening to a whole lot of people!!!!

Such a valuable contribution, thanks so much, it's not just that bike but any that use the same axle/hanger set up, I just pulled the axles out of my brand new Trek Roscoe (absolutely love this bike btw) to remove wheels to transport to a ride and found the hanger moving, thought it was weird and found your video, I removed the cap, cleaned it and refitted correctly with a little loctite so it won't unwind but is going to come apart ok later if needed, cheers from Australia for this excellent tip 👍

Hello All, quite a few rail owners have asked me if this is a defect or fault, no it's not. this is a serviceable part and as such like any other serviceable part on your bike it should be checked to make sure its bolted securely in place. During a normal service in my workshop any nut, bolt or fastener is checked for tightness. This hanger is designed to move backward on a heavy impact only. By making sure that it’s secure ant tight enough will stop it moving during normal use. If you don't feel confident in checking it or any other part of your rail your LBS will be glad to help i'm sure.

Seems like trek dose not wana own responsibility for a bad design.. like when I broke my 2nd F/S carbon top fuel. Trek would not talk to me but kept emailing bike shop I out lived my limited lifetime warranty.. even Giant bicycles replaced & upgraded my 3 cracked frames no questions asked, till I moved on to bigger enduro bikes
@georgewashington7574
@georgewashington7574 Жыл бұрын
So let me get this straight. You’ve managed to crack/break not 1 but 5 different frames from different manufacturers? Where as most people will never have an issue with 1. I think the issue was intended use and probably not the bike. Like jumping 4 stories when a motorcycle with more suspension travel would be the better choice, or enduro bikes.

Beware I tightened this on a Trek Fuel EX8 2022, the same set up only last Saturday as part of my service checks and it snapped the nut well before 25nm which is a silly torque for a nylon nut to handle. Hi Dave, so I watched your KZbin vid on checking your hanger tightness and decided to check my trek rail 7. Took my rear wheel off, Set my torque wrench to 25 NM and started to tighten, then boom! Rear hanger exploded and snapped off. Ok I thought, I have a spare hanger and bolt I’ll just change it. But the bolt will not unscrew from the frame, it looks like part of the plastic hanger is still attached and I can’t get it off. Any ideas?.
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rachel, I’m sorry your hanger has broken off, more often than not it will need drilling out so that the bolt releases the broken hanger I’m afraid. It’s a fairly simple procedure if you are competent. You would expect that if a bolt is marked with a torque setting it should achieve that torque, can I ask, did you buy your bike from a high street retailer and collected it already built or was it an internet purchase delivered in a box

Hi, thanks for watching. The idea of the UDH is that if your derailleur is knocked it will twist out of the way up towards the back wheel, so in its normal position it should be as far forward as it will go, the flat edge against the flat edge.

My Trek 9.7 came out of Trek Poole after a first service. Then a week later less than a mile into my ride in Wales changed up a gear on the trail, then BOOM the derailier went into the cassette and back wheel . It bent the chain as well. Had it repaired at a local bike shop who luckily had the spares at a cost £140.00. Loose Mech hanger. The Trek bike shop are basically not interested because i didn't take the bike back to them for repair. What else was i mean't to do? ruin my day and drive 3 hrs back to them.

Hi Adrian, Such a shame and what rubbish customer service, I really dont get why a main dealer should be so negative, you spent all that money, it would cost them hardly nothing to give you the money back that you spent, instead they have left you annoyed, my view is a customer is potentially for life. Thanks for your comments, you need to write a shitty letter to Trek.

I have a 2022 rail 5 and the rear hub bearing has worked lose. Lots of play. Hi, Thanks for watching and your comments. The industry is slowly realising that ebike rear hubs need to be designed for the ebike market, most hubs are normal bike hubs and struggle to cope with not only the power but accidental shifting under power. Good hubs come at a cost but they are well worth it in ebike applications, however maintenance is still key.

@@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic well thanks for the videos! Drilling sounds really bad, ive put the bike to a trek dealer for warranty. Is this something u have had to deal with on a Trek? Im guessing its more to do with Trek design of that area rather than a Bontrager part fault. Feels like ive got the runt of the litter the power assistance output fluctuates twice a second as i view it on the display, apparently the speed sensor has an issue revealed by the dongle that plugs into computer. I moved the speed sensor slightly when ridewrapping it but thought input it back in pretty much same place 🙈

@@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic the bike was returned to Trek at i think Milton Keynes, they have said that the chainstay is cracked where the thru axle is. That explains allot. I did consider assisting the local to me Trek dealer in the task of drilling the thru axle out, so pretty glad i never. @@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic would love to know your opinion on turning a trek rail into a mullet. 29 front and 27.5 on the rear. Thinking of putting a 2.8 tyre on the back to try keep the geometry similar
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic 3 жыл бұрын
@@ryanemtb4420 Hi Ryan, There are quite a few considerations to take into account, but in a nut shell a lot of downhill riders do it because is makes the front end slacker, also the 29 wheel will give better grip, on the downside you will lower your bottom bracket height, also the derailleur will be lower and you will get more pedal strikes, On the rail like most e-bikes the motor clearance isn't like a normal MTB it's much lower. The 2.8 tyre might be too close to your seat stays. Quite a few things to consider, but is you get get hold of a 27.5 rear wheel give it a try but be aware of the above info. On a last note, the rail is quite a capable bike and will do most things you need it to. My personal opinion, it's not for me. Dave

@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, this is a very good question. If you buy your bike from a high street retailer already built up and you collect it from store then you should expect that it has been fully psi’s (pre delivery inspected) everything should be checked for tightness. If you buy online and have your bike delivered in a box, unless you have agreed with the place where you bought it from that they should pdi it it is up to you to make sure that a competent person will build up your bike and pdi it. It all still depend on your terms of sale and you should check this also.
