I heard that the in universe reason the new Enterprise was so much larger was the fact that the ship the Romulans used was so massive. When the Federation saw the size of the Romulan ship they said "We're going to need a bigger boat" and started making star ships larger from that point on.

No. It’s because of the trans warp drive (reverse engineered from the kelvin’s encounter with Nero’s ship) took up way more space than a normal warp drive. That’s the official explanation as I understand it.

I will say that it took me a while to start liking this design (from the ST09) -- it grew on me -- but yeah, I do like it's modern style overall. Compared to that abomination 1701A that was revealed at the end of STBeyond, the ST09 Ryan Church Enterprise is a gem IMO.

Overall I like the 2009 design,... but those inward-curving pylons need to be straightened out. They pull the massive nacelles way too close together, against the massive sombrero saucer. That one change would make the design near perfect for me. ... Beyond however did worse,... not only pulling them close together, but making the pylons backswept, with smaller nacelles.... backswept pylons only works if the nacelles jut out forward ahead of them, to close the distance from the saucer and balance the design.... But Justin Lin did say he wanted the ship to look weak on purpose.

That's what upset me the most about J.J. Abrams and the Kelvin Timeline. Ever since Mr Scott's Guide, the people behind Star Trek when to a huge effort to make everything about the Enterprise's design seem believable. Then along comes J.J. Abrams who apparently didn't give a bleep. The fact that a 21st century brewing plant stood in for Engineering was painfully obvious. Not to mention the other huge set in the second (?) movie that was a circular well at least a football field in diameter, with a narrow crossover bridge spanning it at one point. I could go on, but I don't want to get badly wound up, right before bed.

The only thing I really dislike about the Kelvin universe Enterprise is the engineering section - the repurposed brewery was just odd.

Didn’t know it was a brewery being used as the engine room. Assumed it was some sort of water plant with the tanks and whatnot but makes sense now it’s been pointed out. As for the multiple warp cores it could literally be tech evolving? Like the tech in the ‘early’ days of Kelvin verse came in multiple parts, and as it developed became a singular entity in one room. Maybe the events of Star Trek 09 triggered the redesign - that if a ship needs to eject it’s core, it takes to long time/ risk of system failure on one of the multiple ejection sequences could damage the ship. Downscaling to one simplifies the process.

I actually knew that the National Ignition Facility thing. BTW, the NIF is used for fusion reaction experiments.

I heard from somewhere that the brewery tanks in engineering were supposed to be storage tanks deuterium and dilithium.

That wasn't the warp core being ejected, it was the matter and Antimatter tanks...

What’s cool is that on the special hot wheels Star Trek ship collection that was released (I 100% recommend yall get some of the ships), on some of the boxes that show the Kelvin timeline enterprise (and both it and the TOS model are pretty rare btw), the product image has the orange buzzard collectors, so I can confirm that some of the merch does indeed show this pre- color change design.

I thought those where anti-matter pods not warp cores. Also, Starfleet hasn’t always used the long tube cores we start seeing in TMP and on. You have the anti matter pods and then there is the actual core where the matter/antimatter mix. That’s where Kirk was in the 2nd movie.

Interesting to learn that they had to alter the design of the ship to make it look structurally weaker in order to prove their claim that the design was structurally weak. That's intellectual integrity right there.
