Watched it thanks to the link provided. 👍🏻 Quite touching, very well done. Something like that is needed with SW. But I don't understand the story & context here. Haven't watched what came before. And I haven't watched everything of "Discovery", because it's total shite, and about nothing of "Not-Picard", so I'm missing a lot, I guess. Most important question, what could be the reason for Kirk to come back, just to say goodbye to Spock? As mentioned, there seems to be connections to V'ger from the 1st movie (my personal Number 1 ST thing, ST6 being a close 2nd), so that detail is interesting. I hope this get's explained later on. There's more coming, I guess.

I saw Star Trek Generations in a movie theater. It was November 1994. The DTS Surround Sound whipped my head back and forth. There was a mini-Star Trek convention in the lobby. Someone in the movie theater played Jerry Goldsmith music before the film started. There was a trailer for a Michael Keaton movie. The visual effects were a mix of ILM and Wavefront. Playmates made a "Captain Kirk in orbital skydiving costume" action figure.

This was such great moment for us fans and brings back so many fond memories... My mom would have loved this. We were both Star Trek fans since it first aired. I took her to see Deforest Kelly at the Statler Hilton Hotel StarTrek Convention. He saw us in the audience and called my mom on stage and put his arm around her. (I'll never forget the smile on my mom's face!) He was so nice to her... (R.I.P. to both of them.) Years later, I went with my friend to the 1st STtng convention also at the Statler Hilton Hotel. We decided to take a break and went to the local bar to have a few drinks... When we sat down, to our surprise, sitting across the bar was Johnathan Frakes. I bought him a drink, and said, "We're just fans!" He raised his and we did a toast together. It was awesome! (I didn't want to bother him anymore, so I left him alone and went back to the convention with my friend.) Later on, after his appearance, Johnathan was walking though the crowd. He saw us and walked over to us, just to shake our hands. (I didn't even think he would remember our faces let alone go to trouble to shake our hands!) (We were all so young then...) Thanks for this marvelous masterpiece that stirs up so many fond memories of those whom we've lost/ have touched our lives and warm out hearts forever...❤🖖

This short film is a reminder that fast cutting and therapy-speak are no substitute for pure cinema's use of images and raw emotions on an actor's face. If only that level of maturity could be applied to a modern Star Trek production. I don't count new series with new actors as being in the same timeline: they're very welcome to exist as another reality. This short was the Star Trek I grew up with and I love. Some of my earliest memories of Star Trek are from the late 1970s. I'll be 50 in a few weeks - not far off Kirk's crisis age in Star Trek II. This was a real gut punch of a film. A thing of beauty. It was needed.
@tomasjoconnel53679 сағат бұрын
I think one can overlook those little imperfections, and whatever angle you look at it from, I think you'll agree, it was a damn good way of rounding off the characters, and bringing them around full circle. In my case, it brought me around to where I started watching it first time, almost 50 years ago. It is a nice way to honour, not just the characters, but all of us fans as well.

Back in 1990, I ran a Star Trek TNG RPG at University of Guelph, where the player crew "rescued" a marooned Starfleet Officer that proved to be Gary Mitchell. I thought he was a character deserving of another story, it's kind of nice to see him here. Indeed, they eventually escaped from him by blowing him out into space, which it seems is where he is in this!

I was completely ignorant to how big this project actually was. Being taken aback by the names attached to the end credits is an understatement. That being said, while I still have a hard time vibing with de-aging/deep faking actors, I still appreciated the sentiment behind this.
@KRAFTWERK2K617 сағат бұрын
Well to be fair a lot of that is done in secrecy with little details surfacing unless they actually publish something to tease it. And i really like that approach or being as lowkey as possible and then simply blowing everything away with the final result. I largely stayed ignorant about their work too until every now and then something gets released and i always have a good feeling in my tummy. They don't have to brag constantly. They seem to be very confident about the quality of what they are working on and what they have to offer and for all the right reasons. The impact is even bigger without all the weeks full of PR campaigns you would usually see with hollywood productions.

Have to say, I too am one of the many with tears in my eyes, having already blubbed like an idiot seeing the Enterprise-D returning to life, now we have Shatner reprise a somehow revived Kirk, even if it's non-speaking and very likely for the final time for him, it's heartwarming to say the least, having also been one of the many having seen Generations in the cinema, seeing two of the great Trek greats being so unceremoniously lost to history, and now, 30 years on, we got them both back and given a proper sendoff...
@RationalGamers9 сағат бұрын
I'm pretty amazed how much they could fit in to such a short film with no dialogue. It gives a perfect send off to the original Kirk and Spock characters and gives us some tidbits that fit just so well into canon. I think it's a bit more meta than it seems, though because the name 'Unification' is obviously in reference to bringing best friends back together but maybe also because it covers OG Star Trek, Kelvin and Disco (parts of the fanbase that tend not to get on so well), it's almost like it's trying to unify all of Star Trek and the fanbase in celebration of Star Trek as a whole.

This would be Alpha canon to me. I agree this could be the last time we see William Shatner as Kirk on screen. Watching this was bringing back memories as a child seeing Generations for the first time in theaters with my dad and balling my eyes out with the destruction of the D and the death of Kirk. My great great grandmother would let me watch the original series when it ran on syndication on TV every time I visited her as a child. I can remember having a bowl of popcorn and waiting for the show to come on. And with the premier of the Next Generation when I was 8 years old just blew me away as a kid. From then on I absorbed everything Star Trek.

Can someone please run the numbers and compare the time between Gary Lockwood's appearances as Mitchell with William Russell's return as Ian Chesterton in Power of the Doctor? That return gave William a world record for longest time between character appearances, which I think may have been broken now by Gary.
@johnpendergraph695217 сағат бұрын
My thought exactly. Though I'm not sure I want that record broken.
@CountScarlioni16 сағат бұрын
David Graham may also be in the running due to him returning to play the same Dalek in "The "Daleks in Colour" revamp after 60 years. But discounting that it's 58 Years for Mitchell, 57 for Chesterton so yes, Gary Lockwood probably now inherits the record - although perhaps with caveats regarding technical jiggery-pokery and the question of what does and does not count as a broadcast.
@djco578210 сағат бұрын
The criteria are a bit nebulous, as William Russell had reprised the role in a direct-to-video short and on audio before Power; the record was specifically related to appearances in the same TV show, discounting suplimentary material. I'm not sure this would be comparable.

such a great work, i had tears in my eyes watching this short movie, i watched all-star trek movies from those periods with my dad (who i lost 4 years ago) so it also does something for me. however i loved the work they did from otoy and hope they will make more movies like these.

I had NO idea that Gary Lockwood himself was involved in this. I also missed the entire shift to the Kelvin Universe, but of course it makes sense. I will absolutely be checking out the OTOY blog. Thank you, Seán and TrekCulture!

So in TNG season 3 when Picard tells Riker that he encountered Sarek previously only once at his son's wedding, it was at Spock's and Saavik's wedding? Paramount and CBS have damaged the franchise enough, they should just leave it as it is and lift their stupid fan films restrictions they implemented ten years ago.

A master class of a video, which itself is a masterpiece. Thank you Seán and Kris...

I still believe Star Trek can return to its Golden Age and this film is proof. Words cannot express the feeling. My dad would've loved to see this if he was around

I always have felt that we go through that white light when we pass. We see all that was close to us. We don't talk-nod each other and smile. It's just beautiful. Kirk/Spock both pass on together. And they should have. This could have been included in Star Trek Beyond during the end credits. (It would have been a nice bookend to such beloved characters.) Gonna be a wild time to see what they can come up with for a full-length movie.

Nicely done. Got goosebumps seeing Kirk as he was back on the original Enterprise in the original uniform.

Thankyou! Absolutely amazing watching this!! To follow Kirk through his survival in many stories and adventures...only to kill him off/push him out of the way in generations was such a disappointment and a discredit. To see this short movie brought hope to the Kirk legacy. I just wish we could have more of these mini movies with William Shatner. Excellent! ... Now hurry and make another!

Super thoughtful and great breakdown. Thank you so much for advocating this. I worked on this project and I can tell you it was made by fans for fans.

I was a bit dissapointed that there was no dialogue. Waiting for Kirk to speak. Not Realistic enough.

I agree it was close but no cigar from me but I thought Id repond here rather than yuck everyone elses yum in the main comments. Floaty heads, sometimes plasticy, noones talking and a shot or three that just look awkward. They are much closer than say Jeff Bridges in Tron Legacy but it aint there yet.

A few years ago, I got to see that old ship that was used for the holodeck ship. It was in Newport, OR.
