There's another scene from "In the Pale Moonlight" that I would have used instead of Sisko's ending log. "And all it cost was the life of one Romulan senator, one criminal, and the self-respect of one Starfleet officer..." Andrew Robinson and Avery Brooks are both fantastic, and that scene is the linchpin of the episode. Sisko has just realized the depths of which he has fallen and tries to reclaim the moral high ground by confronting Garak, only for Garak to explain that there is no high ground. They did what was necessary -- what must be done -- for which there can be no atonement.

Not really. The only reason the Dominion were a threat at all is because of bad writing in the first place. Sort of like how people think Thrawn is tactical and strategic genius when he's a complete moron. But...writers just say "He wins because reasons" and then leave it at that. So, his stupid tactics somehow seem brilliant because they "worked". Star Trek does the same thing pretty often. Though...still not nearly as often as Star Wars. Star Wars is really bad about it.

Missing from this list: the end of the TNG episode Lower Decks, when they discover the remains of Sito's shuttle. The emotional impact of that moment on so many people; the way Worf joins her friends for a drink to remember her. Hits so hard.

When I watched Star Trek Enterprise last year I was in a prolonged period of depression and sadness (though in never really went away...), and there were a number of heavy episodes and scenes that... let's say I appreciated in a special way being sad myself: from the tragedy and Tucker's pain of season 2 finale in "The Expanse", Archer's guilty conscience and death wish for what he did in the Expanse in season 4 episode "Home", to Tucker and T'Pol's loss of daughter in season 4 episode "Terra Prime". And the whole "Azati Prime" episode really hit me, with T'Pol breaking down crying over Archer's suicide mission, Archer's helplessness as he was informed that Enterprise was about to be destroyed, and especially the final scenes of death and destruction on Enterprise...
@Nildael3 ай бұрын
Depression hits really hard, but never let yourself be defeated by it. It's always easier said than done, but it's worth it. Even the fight itself. ST is one of those series that helps me personally to see the brighter future. But if you feel like you're overwhelmed, seek help. There's no shame in that though it's not easy to do so. This world is tough enough on itself, but it's still worth trying to do all you can. Might be babbling now, sorry. But please do not give up.

Obviously, Kirk's decision to let Edith die is a devastating scene. A scene not widely recognized as the most intense but is for me is the end of A Private Little War where Kirk makes the tough decision to condemn each side to years, perhaps centuries of warfare in order to preserve both sides overall. A courageous writing decision in that this was the best of a terrible set of choices. Reminding us of the limits of even starships and their captains.

From what I understand, the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Too Short a Season" was conceived as a sequel to "A Private Little War." In it, an old James T. Kirk returns to the planet to deal with a hostage situation, and it is revealed that his earlier actions led to 40 years of war on that planet. In the actual episode, an Admiral Jameson returns to deal with the consequences of his actions.

The first Star Trek *TV* moment that was a gut punch for me (the first movie gut punch moment was Spock's death in Wrath of Kahn) was the TNG season 3 episode "Sarek", when Sarek was protesting "It is illogical!" over and over again while losing his shit. It graphically displayed the deterioration of a beloved character before our eyes. To see the Vulcan ambassador's mind fail him in that way felt like a knife to my gut. It was truly heart-wrenching.

I'm of the opinion that the following episode to Azati Prime, _Damage_ , is the single best episode in Enterprise showing the crew dealing with the aftermath of the devastating amount of damage to the ship and the emotional toll on the surviving crew. One of my main criticisms of Voyager was that the episodic nature dictated a magic reset button was hit over and over, so Voyager could fire as many Photon Torpedoes as it wanted and even severe damage from the Borg and the Hirogen were all fixed off-camera in between episodes to make Voyager look brand new no matter what happened last time. The Year of Hell two parter was as close as Voyager ever got to facing consequences for events prior, but even then that episode ended in.....a magic reset button. The majority of the visible damage to NX-01 in _Azati Prime_ wasn't fixed at all until the start of the following season. THAT is what Star Trek needed and I'm just sorry it took so long to happen.

That's one thing I liked about new BSG (new? I cannot believe it's been 20 years!). Compare the Galactica at the beginning of the series with the same ship at the end. We've already lost a main character, another is crippled, and they only destroyed the first ship (which had already crippled the Cerritos) with trickery. And now three Pakled warships are surrounding them, literally pulling the ship apart.... Not that the battle with the Texas-Class wasn't pretty intense.

When it comes to intensity, there's one scene that wins every time in my book. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock - The destruction of the Enterprise. Kirk's decision to set the auto-destruct, and he along with Scotty & Chekov giving the necessary commands, followed with the Klingon boarding party and ultimately the explosion that tore the saucer in half. All of it was extraordinarily well written, the visuals were incredible - especially the wrecked hulk of the Enterprise as it flies past the camera, in the exact same orientation as it passed in the opening shot of the very first TOS episode - but what really made the scene was the music, or depending on what part of it the lack thereof. There are very few things in terms of cinema or shows that can make me cry, but the refit Enterprise singing her swan song and ultimately saving her crew by doing so is one of the things that can.
@rbrucewilliams2924Ай бұрын

Some I'd add: Star Trek: Lower Decks (ST:LD) - "No Small Parts" (Season 1, Episode 10): The attack on the USS Cerritos was as intense and action packed as any other "Star Trek" series has been, with many jaw dropping moments. What adds to it is that the Cerritos is not a powerhouse and is facing an opponent that outpowers them in just about every way. Despite that, the Crew did their best to fight for their ship. ST:LD: - "Empathological Fallacies" (Season 4, Episode 5): There's an intensely emotional moment between T'Lyn and Mariner where T'Lyn admits that she fears that she is not vulcan enough, to which Mariner (with colorful language) provides a confidence boost to T'Lyn that she is indeed vulcan enough.

On original US transmission of "Azati Prime", it was broadcast March 3, 2004....the next episode, "Damage", was not broadcast until April 21, 2004. Fans go on about the Summer of 1990 between "Beast of Both Worlds" - yet, as an Enterprise fan, this was just a brutal wait. Did they need time to finish film/edit/effects - or the CW just 'sucked' as a channel-???? I was in Graduate School at the time, for Education - I needed some distractions, and 1.5 months WAS NOT FUN!!!! Now, on disc, or streaming, no worries.

Most intense, are we including the films here? If so, the battle with the cube in First contact is right up there.

It seems you're going to need to make a part 2 maybe even a part 3.
