The OG effects is still cool. I mean, why mess with perfection? I know CBS and Paramount both want to remix the effects to suit the new Trekkies but the '60s effects as originally seen on NBC still hold up.

Didn’t the Defiant from Deep Space Nine have proximity phaser fire, which was especially seen in the movie Star Trek: First Contact?

According to the actress that was the plan, but they wrote her off the show. I would love to read the real reson for it, Shatner once said that she was fired, because she was an alcoholic who came more than once to the set drunk and unable to work, she first said that she was fired because she refused to sleep with a network executive, but years later she claimed that she was fired because the writers thought they have "too many" female character, and they couldn't fire the only black woman on the show and they would never fire the showrunner's lover, so they fired HER. I'd really love to know what was the real reason behind it, I liked her character and their chemistry with captain Kirk

Weird how they put so much importance of the sound effect when the button is being pushed.... whereas the effect itself, when they cut outside the ship has no sound effect at all! They could've put a phaser sound over that if they wanted to. (Glad they didn't, though, adding sounds is a step too far, IMO)

I'm not sure what is up with the clip here, but in the final episode for both the original and remaster, it does have a sound. It basically sounds like a photon torpedo.

Actually, if the original episode there was no sound effect for the proximity phasers. That sound was only added for the original DVD release in 1999. Actually, if you watch the episode on Blu-ray with the mono sound mix, you will hear no torpedo sound effect.
